Discovering the Finer Side of Rum
Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 7, 2012
Here is some nice news for those of you who may want to share a glass of rum with me.
I have been invited by the guys (and gals) at Vines in Riverbend to be the guest host for their “Discovering the Finer Side of Rum” Tasting Event.
We will begin with a a sample of Juan Santos Coffee Rum to serve as an appetizer, and then we will dive into a selection of rum which I have personally selected to be presented and tasted.
Cruzan Estate Single Barrel Rum from St Croix
Abuelo 12 Year Old Rum from Panama
Ron Millonario 15 Solera Rum from Peru
Diplomatico Exclusiva Rum from Venezuela
Mount Gay – 1703 Rum from Barbados
Dos Maderas 5+5 Px from the Caribbean (but finished in Pedro Jimenez Casks in Spain)
I think (although I admit I am biased because I selected the rums) that the line-up is solid, and represents a good cross section of geographical styles of rum production. You can experience the the rich flavour and diversity of rums from South America, from Central America, and the Caribbean Islands.

Hi Chip,
Is there any chance that you’ll be reviewing the Dos Maderas 5+5 Px you tasted last Monday in the near future. I just saw it in a local store but would really like to know what you think about it before I buy. Any early clues?
Thanks,
Laurence

Hi Laurence.
Fortunately I was allowed to keep all of the rum heels from the tasting and all of those rums which I have not reviewed yet, The Ron Millonario XO, the Ron Abuelo 12, and the Dos Maderas (5+5) PX are on the review schedule. I should be publishing each review shortly although I have to squeeze in a few Plantation reviews in the same time frame, and I have several Vodka and Whisky reviews which agents have been patiently waiting for.
On the Dos Maderas, I won’t publish any spoilers because I want everyone to read the reviews, but I will push the review up the queue so to speak and try to publish it with a few weeks.

Sorry – my mistake. It was not the Exclusiva! And after a search I see you’ve had a few of them before. So you already know it was a very nice rum!

A few years ago I brought back a bottle of the Diplomatico from Venezuela and I really like it. It was cheap, so I thought I’d mix it, but it turned out I like it so much, I drink it neat instead. I am excited to see what you think of it.
