BELUGA – The Making of a Monumental Vodka (Part 1)

When the first bottle of BELUGA Vodka rolled off the production lines at the Mariinsk Distillery on December 13th, 2002, the brand positioned itself at the highest end of the market niche for Vodka. This is (the brand owners are quick to point out) not a brand for the masses, rather it is a brand which seeks those consumers who wish to separate themselves from those masses in terms of aristocracy, sophistication, and self-realization. In short the company has positioned the BELUGA brand as a “Monumental Spirit.”
I have written a two-part article which explores the BELUGA brand, attempting to help us understand the two aspects of a Monumental Spirit. My first article delves into the production process of all four BELUGA Vodka brands explaining where and how they are made and the differences between them as far as production is concerned. My second article will delve into the marketing and branding concepts which along with the production methods strive bring these vodka spirits to the status level of Monumental Spirits.

You are a busy guy. I hope your liver holds up. I alternate. Some days I only smell the hundred plus rums in my collection, most of which have been reviewed by you. Keep up the charge.

Fortunately for me, I do not have to consume an entire bottle to write a review. Usually three or four sessions with a 1/2 ounce of spirit will suffice. And when I make my cocktails, I usually have a few friends around who are happy to share the experience. My Liquor shelf (which has been expanded several times since I began my blog) is full of bottles which have only a 3 to four ounces gone in each.

I know what you mean. Since I started writing rum reviews four years ago, my consumption has actually gone down because I sample a few times and then pack up the shop after writing up my notes. Of course, now that I’m moving to drier climes (in all senses), my consumption might drop to (choked sob) zero 🙂
