And the Best Rums of 2018 were …
Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 16, 2019
I hope everyone can forgive my tardiness and that this year I had to pair back my list of the best rums of 2018 from 100 to 50. It wasn’t that I did not encounter enough great spirits to fill the list, rather it was that I did not have enough time at the end of the year to complete the list (see here). In fact my time was compressed to such a degree that my list is publishing about a month after the fact. As I said, I hope you can all forgive me for my tardiness.
About the list, I have tasted each of these rums within the past three years and all of them have been given a full review on my website. You may read these reviews by clicking on each spirit in the list which opens the review page for that cane spirit.

Love your work. I’m curious how some rums drop from one year to the next. For example, 3 of your Top 5 from 2017 aren’t even in your Top 50 for 2018. The other 2 of your 2017 Top 5 remain. Dave

The Appleton 25 Year Old Rum was produced in 2017 and is not in production anymore as far as I am aware. It was the best Rum last year, and I had included it, it would have been very close between the FDC 25 and the Appleton 25 Year Old as to which rum would have been the best.
Similarly the Diplomatico Single Vintage 2000 Rum is no linger in production and is (as far as I know) not readily available anymore.
As for the Dictodor Insolent, I have not had an opportunity to taste the newer bottlings of the Dictador spirit for quite some time and as such it was time to drop them from the listing. I try to keep this list up to date with respect to what I have actually tasted within the past year or two.
Other rums like the Zacapa 25 became available for me to taste again and it re-emerged on the list based upon my most recent impression. Some rums moved up the list because I was particularly drawn to them this year (Flor de Cana 18 and 12) and others have fallen as my appreciation (based on recent tastings) has declined. This year I did not take the time to re-score everything so there may be anomalies between my scores and my rankings.
