3 Barrel Aged Rum

Review: Travellers 3 Barrel Aged Rum   (85.5/100)

3 Barrel Rum is a product of Belize, the northernmost mainland country of Central America. A former British Colony, Belize lies just south of Mexico with the Caribbean Sea to the east and Guatemala to the west and south. Travellers Liquors Limited has been involved in the production of rum in Belize since the early 1960s originally working with independent distillers. In 1989 Travellers acquired full control of their own distillery and has remained in full control of their own brands ever since.

I was given a bottle of 3 Barrel Rum by Blake Christensson of Travellers’ Liquor Canada for the purpose of this review:

In the Bottle 4/5

The 3 Barrel Rum is presented in the 750 ml ‘bar room’ bottle style pictured to the left. The label features three oak barrels, and the name ‘Travellers 3 Barrel Aged Rum’ highlights the fact that this rum has been aged in Kentucky oak barrels for three years . The bottle and labeling are satisfactory, and I have no quibbles with what I see.

I would like to point out that it was a good idea to make the label for the 3 Barrel Rum different from the 1 Barrel Rum (shown behind) so as to minimize consumer confusion between the two brands.

In the Glass 8.5/10

Once poured into the glass the rum is the colour of rich dark brown sugar. It is noticeably darker than the previously reviewed 1 Barrel Rum. I gave my glass a quick tilt and a slow swirl and noticed moderately skinny legs moving slowly down the sides of the glass. The nose is richer and more complex than the nose of the younger 1 Barrel Rum.  It does however, have that same laid back pleasantness, with butterscotch and caramel leading out of the glass. However, I notice more vanillans, and nice oaky accents in the aroma as well.

As the glass decants the aroma of baking spices builds, and the scent of tobacco is apparent in the breezes.

In the Mouth 52/60

The 3 Barrel Rum has much more to offer as a sipper than the 1 Barrel Rum. The flavour is smoother and richer as the oak has set its imprint into the rum in a delightful way. Butterscotch and baking spices lead out onto the palate with a nice marmalade accent from the oak. The vanilla and the light tobacco flavours are in ample evidence and everything is easy to sip and easy to appreciate.

I also taste a nice marzipan accent in the background and a little ribbon of apricot brandy running through everything. When I compare my tasting notes to the 1 barrel, I find that I am tasting the same things only in a richer more complex nature. Almond is now marzipan, canned apricots have turned into apricot brandy and orange peel has morphed into marmalade.  Two extra years of aging can do wonders especially for a young spirit.

In the Throat 12.5/15

The rough spots which were in evidence in the younger 1 Barrel have been smoothed out in the finish of the 3 Barrel Rum. Along with lingering flavours of butterscotch and caramel we find a little more spiciness in the exit. I can taste baking spices in the back of my mouth well after the rum is consumed.

The Afterburn 8.5/10

The Travellers 3 Barrel Rum is what I would consider to be a nice introductory sipping rum which will suit a large variety of palates. It has a flavour profile that tends just a little to the sweet side of the flavour path, but this sweetness is tempered with just enough oak to make the rum delicious. The rum also mixes very well. I sampled some with cola and with ginger-ale to equal delight. I made some cocktails with fruit juice as well and everything always seemed to work out nicely.

Suggested Recipe

3 Barrel Punch

1 1/2 oz Travellers 3 Barrel Rum
1/2 oz Southern Comfort
1/4 oz Lime Juice
Dash Angostura bitters

Pour the 3 barrel Rum and the Southern Comfort into a old-fashioned glass with ice.
Add lime juice and ginger
garnish with a dash of Angostura bitters
Sir and enjoy


You may (loosely) interpret the scores as follows.

0-25     A spirit with a rating this low would actually kill you.
26-49   Depending upon your fortitude you might actually survive this.
50 -59  You are safe to drink this…but you shouldn’t.
60-69   Substandard swill which you may offer to people you do not want to see again.
70-74    Now we have a fair mixing rum or whisky.  Accept this but make sure it is mixed into a cocktail.
75-79    You may begin to serve this to friends, again probably still cocktail territory.
80-84    We begin to enjoy this spirit neat or on the rocks. (I will still primarily mix cocktails)
85-89    Excellent for sipping or for mixing!
90-94    Definitely a primary sipping spirit, in fact you may want to hoard this for yourself.
95-97.5 The Cream of the Crop
98+       I haven’t met this bottle yet…but I want to.

Very loosely we may put my scores into terms that you may be familiar with on a Gold, Silver, and  Bronze medal  scale as follows:

70 – 79.5    Bronze Medal (Recommended only as a mixer)
80 – 89.5     Silver Medal (Recommended for sipping and or a high quality mixer)
90 – 95         Gold Medal (Highly recommended for sipping and for sublime cocktails.)
95.5+            Platinum Award (Highest Recommendation)
