Herencia de Plata Blanco Tequila

Review: Herencia de Plata (Blanco) Tequila 83.5/100
a review by Chip Dykstra (Aka Arctic Wolf)
January 6, 2021

Herencia de Plata Blanco Tequila is a 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila produced by TEQUILAS DEL SEÑOR, S. A. DE C. V.,  a mid-sized, fourth generation family company located in Guadalajara, Mexico. The company was founded in 1943 and currently produces a number of tequila brands which include, Reserva del Señor, Sombrero, Tekali, Herencia Histórico, and of course Herencia de Plata.

Note: I identified the NOM on the back label of the bottle as 1124. This NOM identifier is required by the Mexican Government to be placed on the label of each bottle of tequila to verify that it is produced legally from agave sourced in the Tequila region of Mexico. Each distillery has its own NOM, and thus we can verify the distillery of origin. In this case it is TEQUILAS DEL SEÑOR, S. A. DE C. V. who also produce a number of other tequila brands including the Don Lunas and Sombrero.

In the Bottle 4/5

Herencia de Plata Blanco Tequila comes packaged in an attractive blue box (not shown). The bottle inside the box is a squat decanter style bottle complete with a solid wood topped straight sided cork. However the clear plastic label is a bit of a distraction for me.

I have come to learn that it is important for the consumer to determine whether they are purchasing a highland style or a lowland style Tequila. The flavour profiles of each style is different with lowland tequila being more organic and earthy and highland tequila being more fruit filled and peppery. I would have liked a bit of information in the form of tasting notes printed on the side of the box. This would take some confusion out of the purchase decision for the potential customer.

In the Glass 8.5/10

Colour:  Crystal Clear

Legs:  Small leglets form at crest releasing skinny legs which disappear befear reaching the bottom of the glass.

Nose: The aroma from the glass is somewhat soft and earthy with hints of honey caressed by a very light smoke and even lighter vanilla. A smattering of white pepper and of zesty lime has risen into the breezes, and that punky agave scent we know so well has melted nicely into the citrus and pepper. The overall impression I receive from the glass is a clean, fresh, almost floral spirit.

In The Mouth 50/60

My first impression upon the palate is one of softness. The agave spirit is lightly sweet and lightly spicy. The punky fruit flavour carries a smoky honey-like presence, and the soft white pepper and lime citrus carry anice mild spiciness (mild in terms of tequila). The earthy flavour of the agave is to me reminiscent of a light floral smoke within the spirit. The tequila seems to carry this smokey agave forward softening the sharper flavours and allowing those light nuances of vanilla and smoke to be enjoyed.

I mixed few drinks including a traditional Margarita and a couple of my construction, Metro Mexico, and The Quick Red Fox. The cocktails were very nice. The Margarita in particular seemed to hit the right notes and as a result my recommended cocktail is the margarita style cocktail below.

In the Throat  12.5/15

This is a relatively smooth Blanco. The amazing thing is that this tequila is priced much more favourably than many of the other premium tequila spirits out there that do not match this soft finish. Soft earthy agave, hints of honey and vanilla, citrus zest, and a light white pepper are all melded together in the exit.

The Afterburn 8.5/10

Herencia de Plata Blanco Tequila is a very nice blanco spirit. The flavour is soft with a light agave sweetness which is brightened by lime zest and lightly spicy white pepper. It is maybe not quite in the sipping category, but it works extremely well in traditional cocktails.

You may (loosely) interpret the scores as follows.

0-25     A spirit with a rating this low would actually kill you.
26-49   Depending upon your fortitude you might actually survive this.
50 -59  You are safe to drink this…but you shouldn’t.
60-69   Substandard swill which you may offer to people you do not want to see again.
70-74    Now we have a fair mixing Tequila.  Accept this but make sure it is mixed into a cocktail.
75-79    You may begin to serve this to friends, (we are probably still cocktail in territory).
80-84    We begin to enjoy this spirit neat or on the rocks. (I will still primarily mix cocktails)
85-89    Excellent for sipping or for mixing delicious cocktails!
90-94    Definitely a primary sipping spirit, in fact you may want to hoard this for yourself.
95-97.5 The Cream of the Crop
98+       I haven’t met this bottle yet…but I want to.

Very loosely we may put my scores into terms that you may be familiar with on a Gold, Silver, and  Bronze medal  scale as follows:

70 – 79.5    Bronze Medal (Recommended only as a mixer)
80 – 89.5     Silver Medal (Recommended for sipping and or a high quality mixer)
90 – 95         Gold Medal (Highly recommended for sipping and for sublime cocktails.)
95.5+            Platinum Award (Highest Recommendation)
