A Valentine Suggestion: Cosmo for Two

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 11, 2019

Valentines is only a few days away and my cocktail suggestion this year is the Contemporary Classic, the Cosmopolitan, which according to the IBA (International Bartenders Association) is a cocktail made with Vodka Citron (lemon flavoured vodka), Cointreau (orange liqueur), Cranberry Juice, and freshly squeezed Lime Juice.

The serving is by no means consistent, and if you order a Cosmo (as the bar drink is frequently referred to) you will most likely receive a variation on the recipe usually using an unflavoured vodka, a sweetener, Cranberry juice and lime juice. An orange peel garnish is also quite popular, (the IBA formulation states a lime slice garnish).

Like most home bartenders, I do not have a ready supply of Vodka Citron, nor a suitable substitute in my home bar. However, I wanted to build my Valentine’s Cosmopolitan with a light influence of lemon flavour as in the official IBA formulation. I did this by using a recently acquired bottle of Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka and tweaking the recipe with a touch of lemon juice while decreasing the lime juice by the same amount. I decided that for Valentine’s Day a raspberry garnish would be an interesting twist.

Here is my Valentine recipe (built for two) of the Contemporary Classic Cocktail!

Valentine’s Cosmopolitan for Two

3 1/2 oz Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1 1/4 oz Cointreau
1 1/4 oz Cranberry juice
1 oz Lime juice
1/4 oz Lemon juice
1/4 oz Simple Syrup (1:1 ratio)
Fresh Raspberries

Add the first six Ingredients into a cocktail Shaker with ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Strain the cocktail into two matching chilled glasses
Garnish with fresh raspberries.

Smirnoff Holiday Punch combines Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka with combination of Autumnal Fruit flavours and Citrus Juices which are freshened with Sparkling Wine and garnished with Raspberry Sherbet. The recipe as shown serves 12, just double it for larger gatherings.

Christmas Cocktail Bazaar: Holiday Cosmo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 28, 2018

As I mentioned this past Sunday, Thanksgiving (both the Canadian and the American) Holiday is past, and I am now gearing up for the Christmas Season by sharing some yule tide cocktails. Today’s serving is a seasonal take on the classic Cosmopolitan Cocktail.  The twist is the use of Cranberry Pomegranate Juice and then the dressed up garnish which includes candy glitter.

Here is a hint for you, when you rime the glass, keep the glitter on the outside so as to not sweeten the serving unnecessarily. As well, (although it is not shown on the picture below) leave about a third of the rim without candy garnish so you can sip without getting a mouthful of glitter. The serving will still look spectacular wowing all of your friends, and if someone has a sweeter tooth they can always turn the glass around when they sip.

Here is the Holiday Cosmo served with Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka.

Add Smirnoff No. 21 VodkaTriple Sec and Cranberry Pomegranate Juice into a metal shaker with Ice

Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Autumn Harvest Punch

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 18, 2018

With American Thanksgiving just around the corner (up here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in early October rather than late November), I thought I would share a nice ‘punch style’ recipe suitable for large gatherings of friends and family. The serving is courtesy of Megan Marlowe (Strawberry Blondie Kitchen), and it was sent to me by the USA media team responsible for Smirnoff Vodka.

Autumn Harvest Punch combines the seasonal flavours of Autumn fruit (apples and pears) and Autumnal spices (cinnamon, rosemary, and star anise) with a little bite of tropical citrus (lemon juice). A combination of Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, Apple Cider and Ginger Ale provide the liquid refreshment.

When I mixed a small batch for myself, I found the serving quite tasty, although perhaps it goes down just a little too easily. Make sure when you share this recipe with your friends that advise them to enjoy responsibly and choose a designated driver ahead of time for the ride home.

Autumn Harvest Punch
(Makes 16 servings)

3 cups Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
2 Apples, cored and thinly sliced
2 Pears, cored and thinly sliced
1 Lemon thinly sliced
6 cups Apple Cider
1/4 cup fresh Lemon Juice
4 Cinnamon Sticks
4 pods Star Anise
Rosemary Sprigs
4 cups Ginger Ale

Add sliced Apples, Pears and Lemon into a large punch bowl
Pour in Apple Cider, Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka and Lemon Juice
Garnish with Cinnamon Sticks, Clove and fresh Rosemary Sprigs
Stir to combine and chill until ready to serve
Before serving, add Ginger Ale and stir gently

Of Course, Please Enjoy Responsibly!
