Christmas Cocktail Bazaar: Smirnoff Holiday Punch

Smirnoff recently unveiled four new Limited Edition festive ornament bottles for you to celebrate the holiday season with their iconic Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka.  And some more good news, each of the ornamental bottles are now filled with non-GMO Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka.

As I am well into the seasonal phase of my Fall Cocktail Bazaar I have decided to share this tasty punch recipe sent to me by the Smirnoff Media Team and created by Kendra Darling (Simply Darrling)

Smirnoff Holiday Punch combines Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka with combination of Autumnal Fruit flavours and Citrus Juices which are freshened with Sparkling Wine and garnished with Raspberry Sherbet. The recipe as shown serves 12, just double it for larger gatherings.

Smirnoff Holiday Punch

5 oz Smirnoff No. 21 Holiday Ornament Vodka
6 oz. Cranberry-Raspberry Juice
2 oz Pineapple Juice
10 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Lime Juice
12 oz Bottle Sparkling Wine
Raspberry Sherbet
Slices of Limes, Oranges and frozen Cranberries

Combine all the Juice in a punch bowl
Stir in the Sparkling wine and the Smirnoff No. 21 Holiday Ornament Vodka
Garnish with slices of Limes, Oranges, and frozen Cranberries
Place a ball of raspberry sherbet into a glass
Ladle punch into the glass

Note: Smirnoff No. 21 is a triple distilled spirit, produced on a large multi-column still from North American prairie grain and bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume. And just in time for the holiday season, Smirnoff No. 21 is now non-GMO (non genetically modified).

Review: Forty Creek Unity

Forty Creek Whisky has an annual tradition of producing a special limited release whisky which is built upon the foundation of the company’s flagship whisky, Forty Creek Barrel Select. These annual special releases each seek to bring new character to the Forty Creek family. This year, the distillery had a contest of sorts where five fans of Forty Creek Whisky representing different areas of Canada were asked to help create the 2018 Forty Creek Special Release. Because the group could not agree on which of the three special blends was the best, a fourth blend was created by Mr. Ashburn which ultimately became the chosen favourite of the entire group.

The special blend was called, “Unity“. One of the features of this Unity blend special is that it includes a subset of 4-year-old Forty Creek whiskies within its construct. These young whiskies were blended together and then aged for a further time using high mocha wood staves added to the barrels. Completing the blend is a 10-year-old corn whisky as well as a small amount of 15-year-old Portuguese-style Starboard wine aged in used Forty Creek barrels.

“… The whisky brings firm indications of oak and vanilla which are melded into a menagerie both rye and baking spices (cloves and cinnamon), hints of almond, and light indications of dark fruit and red licorice.  I really like how the scents and smells seem to act in harmony without any wayward notes clashing with the unity of the overall aroma …”

Review: Appleton Estate 15 Year Old (Minimum Age) Rum

The Appleton Estate is located in Nassau Valley in St. Elizabeth which is part of Jamaica’s Cockpit Country. The Cockpit Country is a karst formation which was formed over millions of years as the underlying limestone was eroded by the chemical action of rain. Within a cockpit karst formation are valleys known as Poljes. They are formed where a river floods, then recedes and forms a flat valley over millions of years. The soil in the poljes is very fertile and rich in nutrients because of the sediments left behind after the river had receded. In 1749, within the polje known as the Nassau Valley, the Appleton Estate Sugar Factory was founded. The Nassau Valley has a special mild micro-climate which is ideally suited to the growth of sugarcane. As well, a water source wells from the limestone formation and provides an exceptionally soft pure water which used for the production of Appleton Estate Rums.

Appleton Estate 15 Year Old Rum was recently introduced in Canada as a new Limited Edition Rum. This is a true 15 Year Old spirit as all of the rums within the blend (a mixture of column still and heavy pot still rums) have been aged a minimum of 15 Years before being bottled at 43 % alcohol by volume.

“… my nose is greeted by zesty oak spice, caramel toffee and light funky pot still aromas (camphor and resin, bits of menthol, and vague hints of tar). Baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg) rise into the breezes as well. Spicy orange peel and a light grassy quality also begin to wind into the air above the glass …”

Introducing: Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast

Building upon the success of last year’s release of Captain Morgan Cannon Blast (see my review here), Captain Morgan is adding a new Limited Edition Spiced Rum to the shots category with their brand new Pumpkin Spiced Rum, Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Limited Edition Pumpkin Spiced Rum, the first pumpkin spiced rum offering to ever hit shelves

The premise of the new spiced flavour is autumn in a shot glass, as Captain Morgan has blended Caribbean rum with some of your favorite fall flavors, fresh pumpkin and cinnamon (as well as other autumnal spices) creating what they hope will be an insanely delicious shot. Of course, I had to put it through the paces of my review system to see if it was all that Captain Morgan promised.

Review: Centennial Limited Edition Canadian Whisky (NAS)

Whisky Splash SAM_1629Centennial Limited Edition Canadian Whisky is produced by Alberta’s own Highwood Distillers. It has quietly replaced Highwood’s former Centennial 10 Year Old Canadian Whisky (see review here) as the flagship brand of their Centennial Lineup. The Centennial brand is unique in Canada as rather than using corn as the base grain for this whisky, Centennial uses soft Canadian winter wheat and rye  This gives the Centennial brand a smooth and soft flavour profile which I have found is unlike any other Canadian whisky. In fact, using grains grown exclusively on the Canadian prairies, distilling the grain in their home Province of Alberta, and aging the spirit in the severe Western Canadian climate makes  Centennial is a Whisky unlike any other in the world.

Centennial Limited Edition features no age statement which makes it different from the Centennial 10 Year Old Whisky which used to carry the flag for the brand. When I asked the folks at the distillery I was told that the Centennial brand had reached a point of popularity such that Highwood could no longer meet the demand for their 10 Year Old whisky across the country. This meant that the distiller was faced with two choices. They could either raise the price to temper demand (and annoy their loyal customers), or they could create a new flagship Centennial Whisky (the Limited Edition) which they could produce in sufficient quantity to meet the new demand across Canada. They chose the second course, although they are hoping this new blend is met with the same enthusiasm as the previous blend.

“… I let the glass sit for a while, and noticed that the rye grain was joined by wood spices and these spicy accents seem to grow in the breezes. I also notice a light almost bitter astringency in the air which seems to be related to the building rye spice. As the glass continues to decant, some dry grassy tobacco comes to the fore and a light fruitiness is evolving from the rye which is also filling the air with light scents of ginger …”
