Review: Agave 99 Anejo Tequila

Agave 99 Tequila is a lowland tequila produced by Fabrica de Tequilas Finos, S.A. De C.V.. The distinction between agave grown in the lowlands instead of the highlands is important because lowland agave tends to carry more earthy and vegetal flavours into the final distilled product than agave grown in the highlands. These lowland characteristics should be even more assertive than usual given the high bottling proof (99 proof) of the spirit. (Incidentally the 99 proof bottling strength is the reason the spirit is called Agave 99).

The Agave 99 Anejo Tequila has been aged for a minimum of two years in American White Oak and as indicated above, is bottled at 49.5 % alcohol by volume. As part of the media package I was given for this spirit when I received my sample (from Select Wines & Spirits) were two copies of official looking certificates. These indicated that the Agave 99 Tequila is considered legally ‘organic’ by both the European Union and the USDA. It was also indicated to me that the tequila is kosher and is therefore suitable for both Cinco de Mayo and for Passover.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… the aroma from the Tequila is indeed quite earthy with that underlying punky agave scent reminiscent of baked garden squash. There is a light oak scent which resembles sandalwood, and enticing wisps of butterscotch and caramel rising into the air. Hints of cardamom and ginger are scattered within the breezes and perhaps a few orange pekoe tea leaves as well. Within all of this is a very subtle citrus spiciness which seems beautifully melded into the aroma…”

Review: Herradura Reposado Tequila

Thirty miles from Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, in the town of Amatitan, is where the Herradura LDN can be found. Herradura LDN makes a true 100% Weber Blue agave tequila. The agave is cooked in old stone ovens, and distilled on old copper pot stills.

Herradura Reposado tequila has won numerous awards and accolades for the Herradura company. As well, Herradura LDN is credited on more than one website as pioneering the movement towards aging tequila in oak and making Reposado and Anejo Tequila. Reposado means rested, and literally the implication is that this style of tequila ‘rests’ in oak. By law reposado tequila must spend more than two months and less than one year in oak to be considered  “Reposado”.  The Herradura Reposado rests in oak for eleven months.

I first reviewed the Herradura Reposado on my website in January of 2010. Recently I received a new bottle, and this past weekend I put it through the paces of my review system and revised my original review. Here is an excerpt from that review:

“… Once we pour the Herradura Reposado our nose is immediately greeted with an intense, earthy, agave scent. Getting past the intensity of that earthy agave is difficult, but letting the glass rest for a few moments allows us to catch sweeter tones of caramel and to a lesser extent vanilla. The spiciness of red chili peppers and a hint of citrus complete the nose …”

Review: Cruz del sol Reposado Tequila

According to the website information, Cruz Tequila contains no chemicals, additives or flavorings. It is produced from pure 100% blue agave grown in the Mexican State of Jalisco. After harvesting this agave, it is steamed in traditional hornos (or brick ovens) for two days. The cooked agave is then allowed to cool after which the juice is extracted and then fermented. The Cruz Del Sol Reposado is double distilled and aged in oak barrels for five months. All of the Cruz Tequila is packaged and bottled using recycled materials. This includes the blown glass bottles and the aluminum caps as well as the aluminum cross on the front label.

This product is being brought into my home market of Alberta by local the Importer PB Beverages who arranged for me to receive a sample bottle to review here on my website.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… The initial aroma from the glass is lightly sweet with the mild punky aroma of agave combining well with the muted scent of white pepper. There is a mild vanilla which rises into the air above the glass, and a mellow fruity citrus scent which winds through the breezes… “

Review: Herencia de Plata (Blanco) Tequila

Herencia de Plata Blanco Tequila is a 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila produced by TEQUILAS DEL SEÑOR, S. A. DE C. V.,  a mid-sized, fourth generation family company located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The company was founded in 1943 and currently produces a number of tequila brands which include, Reserva del Señor, Sombrero, Tekali, Herencia Histórico, and of course Herencia de Plata.

A sample bottle was provided to me by Westway L. LTD., who is the importer of this spirit in my home province of Alberta, and it was presented at a Tequila tasting event which I held for several friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon in March. Of course after the tasting event, I put the bottle through the paces of my review methodology to provide a review here on my website as well.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… The aroma from the glass is somewhat soft and earthy with hints of honey caressed by a very light smoke and even lighter vanilla. A smattering of white pepper and of zesty lime has risen into the breezes, and that punky agave scent we know so well has melted nicely into the citrus and pepper. The overall impression I receive from the glass is a clean, fresh, almost floral spirit which seems to entice me to have a sip …”

Review: Patrón Silver Tequila

Patron Silver Tequila is a pure 100% Agave Tequila made from agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The Agave is 6 to 7 years old when harvested, and the heart of the plant or the piña is all that is used. These piñas are cut and slowly steamed in masonry ovens for 79 hours. The steamed piñas are then shredded and placed into a traditional stone pit, where they are broken (or shredded) into finer pieces with a large stone milling wheel called a Tahona. The resulting juice is then fermented for 72 hours in a wooden fermentation vat, and distilled twice in copper pot stills.

As a highland tequila,we can expect the Patron Tequila to exhibit strong fruity citrus notes and to have a little hot pepper in the delivery and the finish. The company was created in 1989 when John Paul DeJoria, and Martin Crowley formed The Patrón Spirits Company with the stated singular goal of producing “the best tequila in the world.”

I received a 375 ml sample bottle of the Patron Silver Tequila from Diamond Estates Wine and Spirits, who are the local distributor Patron Spirits.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… I think it is safe to say that the Patrón Silver has a traditional highland tequila finish filled with spicy white pepper and hot citrus. It is not overly harsh considering the spice; but, neither is it smooth. Some of the earthy agave is present in the exit, but the citrus and the pepper are definitely much more abundant than the earthy herbaceous agave. …”
