Review: Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 2, 2016
Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a whiskey brand produced and bottled in Kentucky by Heaven Hill. This company refers to its entry-level whiskey as a ‘black label brand’, and as such it is meant to be the flag bearer of the Evan Williams line-up. The whiskey has no age statement, however the Evan Williams website tells us that it is aged longer than required by law. (Straight whiskeys must by law be aged for 2 years in new oak barrels; however, if they do not have an age statement they must be aged for 4 years. )

According to Parker Beam, EW black label is aged 5-8 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juc4BqBSPyg&list=WL&index=1 . Also, if I recall correctly, 2 years may be the legal minimum for straight bourbon, but there is also a requirement to specify the age on the bottle if less than 4 years.

Thanks for the link Rudolf. That clarifies things a bit, although it still may be true that the bourbon destined for Canada is a different age than the bourbon destined for the USA. This is actually quite common and usually the website and marketing information when this occurs relates the whiskey details of the local market and not the export market.
Having said that you are right, A straight Bourbon Whiskey with no age statement must be at least 4 years old. I appreciate the correction, and I have made changes to my posting.
Many Thanks! 🙂
