Review: Rum Nation – Engenho Novo Amarone Cask

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 19, 2020

Rare Rums is the special selection of Rum Nation bottlings. These are particular special limited edition releases with very few numerated bottles. Engenho Novo Amarone Cask (Nat84) was bottled from two casks (186 and 187) from Madeira’s Engenho Novo Distillery (William Hinton). It is a 9 year Old Agricole Rhum which was finished for 18 months in Amarone Casks, after an initial aging period in 2nd fill bourbon casks.

According to Rum Nation’s Rare Rums website (here):

This traditional distillery from Madeira conducted an experiment finishing their rum for 18 months in casks of the heavy, fruity Italian red wine: Amarone. It was a risky experiment; however the result was more conservative than expected. The typical herbal richness of their rum, full of earthy notes, was preserved: dark, and with the influence of the Amarone wine appearing as as a different twist in the peppery character and tannic astringency of the long, warm, lingering finish.

Rum Nation – Engenho Novo Amarone Cask is bottled at 52 % alcohol by volume.

Review: Rum Nation – Engenho Novo Amarone Cask (Nat 84)

“… I smell rum and hints of red licorice with vanilla and spice. There are herbal herbal scents of camphour and heather and hints light minty candies. As the glass breathes I notice building aromas of dry fruit (dates and raisins), spicy oak, rich baking spices and luscious chocolate all joining in with those cherry-like red licorice scents …”

Please enjoy my review of this Rum Nation Rare Rum.

Review: By the Dutch Batavia Arrack (Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 10, 2020

By The Dutch is a spirits company formed in 2015 with the goal to broaden the international awareness of traditional handcrafted and premium spirits of Dutch heritage. Their Batavia Arrack is an Indonesian Rum distilled on Java Island. Their Bativia Arrack is a 100 % sugar-cane based spirit produced from of a range of Pot distilled spirits. Traditionally, Bativia Arrack uses a fermentation process includes the addition of local (red) rice. This sets it apart from traditional Rum, and some jurisdictions refuse to allow Bativia Arrack to be labeled as rum even though the spirit is derived from sugar-cane.

By The Dutch Bativia Arrack has been produced in the traditional method, however, for the purpose of this review, I may refer to the spirit as both Batavia Arrack and as Indonesian Rum.

Review: By the Dutch Batavia Arrack (Rum)

“… The nose is filled with oak spice and straw mingling with butterscotch, orange peel, and almond. I sense a light wisp of something vegetal which reminds me of cachaca. Ginger, banana coconut and melon all seemed to have joined in and the result is quite pleasing …”

Review: Compass Distillers Daily Ration Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 3, 2020

Compass Distillers is located in Halifax Nova Scotia, where Graham, Josh, and David began their distilling journey with a belief that they could create world-class spirits locally. Their artisan Craft Spirits are not imported, they are not blended with generic ingredients, nor are they pumped out of a factory; Rather, they are made from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.

Compass Distillers Daily Ration Rum is crafted with Crosby’s Molasses and Brown Sugar that is fermented and distilled in small batches. The rum distillate is placed in oak barrels & aged on site at the Halifax Citadel. From the barrel to the bottle, this traditional-style rum derives its colour, character & complexity from the aging process.

Note: It a fact that for over 300 years it was a tradition of the British Navy that each member of the naval crew was issued a daily ration of rum. This tradition began in 1655, and by 1731, the tradition of the daily ration was in general use throughout the British Navy.

Review: Compass Distillers Daily Ration Rum

“… Rising into the breezes above the glass were light oak spices combined with butterscotch and hints of almond. Orange peel and banana join in as does a light winding impression of grasses and hay. Some baking spices develop as I allow the glass to breathe represented by scents of vanilla, light cinnamon …”

Please enjoy my review which concludes with two serving suggestions, the Brooklynite, and the Eastern Compass!

Review: Pixan 8 Anos Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 25, 2020

Pixan Rum is produced at Destileria Espiritus del Norte, a relatively new distillery located in Monterrey in northeastern Mexico. Apparently Pixan comes to us linguistically from the Mayan people and it is a word which roughly means ‘Spirit which gives life’Pixan 8 Anos is the distillery’s most premium rum.

Here is a link to my recently expanded review for the Pixan 8 Anos Rum.

Review: Pixan 8 Anos Rum

“… The initial nose is full of oak spice, butterscotch and vanilla with hints of almond and walnut. As the glass breathes oak spice continues to pour out, and we sense firmer aromas of butterscotch and vanilla. A fruitiness also develops with hints of sweet and sour fruit, some orange peel and impressions of canned apricot. Their are also herbal notes with bits of menthol and fresh hay …”

Review: Santos Dumont XO Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 13, 2020

Santos Dumont XO Rum is produced by A.H.Riise Spirits in Dragor, Denmark. A.H. Riise, for those who do not know is one of the largest Scandinavian spirits companies which manufactures, sells and distributes brands of whiskey, rum, vodka, gin, bitters and aquavit. The company (established in 2016) is named for it’s most well known spirits brand A.H. Riise Rum which is an homage to Albert Heinrich Riise who established rum production of rum on Saint Thomas in the Danish West Indies  (now the United States Virgin Islands) in 1838.

This is a Brazilian spirit made from freshly pressed virgin sugarcane honey, distilled in old potstills and matured in three different types of oak, ex bourbon, ex Port and ex Pedro Ximenez casks.

Here is a link to my recently expanded review:

Review: Santos Dumont XO Rum

“… The initial nose is quite sweet with scents of vanilla, butterscotch toffee and maple syrup all rising into the breezes. After the glass is allowed to breathe oak spice pushes through the toffee sweetness. I also notice other sweet scents of candied oranges and canned apricots. Coconut as well as some mushy banana finally appear as well …”

Please enjoy the expanded review which includes a revised score.
