Review: Compass Distillers 100% Nova Scotian Rye

Compass Distillers is located in Halifax Nova Scotia, where Graham, Josh, and David began their distilling journey with a belief that they could create world-class spirits locally. Their artisan Craft Spirits are not imported, they are not blended with generic ingredients, nor are they pumped out of a factory; rather, they are made from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.

Compass Distillers 100% Nova Scotian Rye gives recognition to bountiful harvest of Nova Scotia’s grain. The spirit was produced from grain which was milled, mashed, fermented, and distilled in Halifax, and then was aged in new charred North American oak barrels for three years.

Review: Compass Distillers Gin Wild

Compass Distillers is located in Halifax Nova Scotia, where Graham, Josh, and David began their distilling journey with a belief that they could create world-class spirits locally. Their artisan Craft Spirits are not imported, they are not blended with generic ingredients, nor are they pumped out of a factory; Rather, they are made from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.

Gin Wild is Compass Distillers version of a classic gin with a Nova Scotian twist. Constructed from a base spirit of 100% Nova Scotian wheat, the gin is distilled with a blend of classic gin botanicals,with wild Nova Scotian juniper given the starring role. This juniper is handpicked from the rocky barrens of the Nova Scotia coastline. The rugged shores and climate impart a strong character to the berry. Other botanicals include orange, lemon, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cilantro & ginger.

“… The nose translates extremely well across the palate as we do indeed have a bit of an edge on the juniper and with firm peppery spices (coriander and hints of ginger) chasing. Orange and lemon flavours play underneath softening the flavour just a little and bringing balance. Hill side florals trail merrily along …”

Review: Compass Distillers Spiced Rumb

is located in Halifax Nova Scotia, where Graham, Josh, and David began their distilling journey with a belief that they could create world-class spirits locally. Their artisan Craft Spirits are not imported, they are not blended with generic ingredients, nor are they pumped out of a factory; Rather, they are made from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.

Compass Distilled Spiced Rumb is crafted with Crosby’s Molasses and Brown Sugar that is fermented and distilled in small batches. In Canada, Rum must be aged for one year in oak barrels. The Rumb which is produced by Compass Distillers is bottled without aging and so to differentiate the spirit from legal rumin Canada which must be aged for at least one full year, the product is called rumb.

“… the initial nose brings light butterscotch and vanilla aromas combined with scents and smells which seem to have an association with gin-like spices. I checked with the producer and learned that the rum is constructed from unaged rum distillate and spices which any gin enthusiast would recognize: cinnamon, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla bean, orange, licorice root …”

Review: Gin Royal (Compass Distillers)

Compass Distillers is located in Halifax Nova Scotia, where Graham, Josh, and David began their distilling journey with a belief that they could create world-class spirits locally. Their artisan Craft Spirits are not imported, they are not blended with generic ingredients, nor are they pumped out of a factory; rather, they are made from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients.

Compass Distillers Gin Royal gives recognition to the to the bees who are required to pollinate more than half of the botanicals used in gin. They make the point that without bees, there in fact would be no gin. Their royal blue spirit is distilled from Nova Scotian wheat with both classic and contemporary gin botanicals. The spirit derives its deep blue colour from an infusion of butterfly pea blossom. Before the gin is finished, it is given a light sweetness with local honey and royal jelly. Botanicals used to produce Gin Wild include juniper, orange, lemon, coriander, pepper, angelica root, orris root, cassia, local honey, royal jelly and butterfly pea blossom.

In order to protect the bees that make their gin possible, Compass Distillers promises that one dollar from every bottle sold will be donated to the Nova Scotia Beekeepers Association to assist in their efforts to promote bee health and sustainable beekeeping.

“… I notice a piny juniper aroma chased by somewhat peppery spices as well as coriander and citrus zest. There are hints of orange liqueur, lemon and honey in the air as well as very lightly perfumed florals (blue iris and violets). I am happy that the perfumed quality is kept in check, so as not to overpower the other botanicals …”
