Review: Baker’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Baker’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is an original member of  Jim Beam’s Small Batch Bourbon Collection composed of Booker’s, Baker’s, Knob Creek,and Basil Hayden’s.  Although Jim Beam Distillers no longer promotes the Small Batch Collection, I would like to suggest that this selection of premium bourbon played no small part in the explosion of popularity of the spirit for whiskey enthusiasts. (It certainly has a positive impact on me.)

Baker’s Bourbon is named for Baker Beam, who was the grand-nephew of James Beauregard Beam (Jim Beam). Each bottle is poured from a single barrel. When that barrel is used up, the next bottles will come from a new barrel. This means that the overall flavour profile is unique to each barrel produced.

Baker’s Bourbon is bottled at 107 proof (53.5% alcohol by volume) and produced from whisky which was aged for a minimum of 7 years.

“… The breezes above the glass were rich and enticing with the scents of sappy oak, rich vanilla and caramel chocolate. Honeycomb joins in with luscious baking spices (particularly cloves and cinnamon) drifting into the breezes …”

Review: Wild Turkey 101 (Kentucky Straight Bourbon)

Wild Turkey produces their bourbon from a mash bill which includes three grains: corn, barley, and rye. This mash bill is said to have a relatively high proportion of rye which gives the whiskey brand its signature spicy kick.  Wild Turkey 101, rather than being bottled at the regular 40 % alcohol by volume is instead bottled at a higher proof, 50.5% alcohol by volume or 101 proof.

Although the spirit carries no age statement, the Wild Turkey Website informs us that this Kentucky Straight Bourbon is blended from whiskeys aged from five to eight years (minimum 5 years) in what the company refers to as their ‘famous #4 alligator char‘ American Oak barrels.

“… When I take my first sip, I find an abundance of rye flavour joined by a light rum-like caramel, firm vanilla flavours and spicy oak sap and tannins. Although the whiskey is rye-forward, I also taste a firm presence of corn meandering alongside. Light flavours of maple join with the caramel, and some delicious baking spices (vanilla, ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon) accent the oak and the rye …”

Review: Buck 8 Year Old Bourbon

BuckBuck 8 Year Old Bourbon is a Kentucky Straight Whiskey produced and bottled by Frank-Lin Distillers, Products Ltd. who have been a bottler and producer of distilled spirits since Frank Maestri founded the company in 1966. (Frank-Lin currently operates out of their new facility in Fairfield California with annual capacity of over 10 million cases of wines and spirits.)

Buck Bourbon is bottled at 90 % alcohol by volume.

“… the initial nose brought forward light grassy smells with an added light sweetness of caramel and butterscotch and a gentle sweep of vanilla. Somewhere in that mixture was a mild impression of graham wafers as well. I allowed the glass to sit, and aromas of corn syrup began to separate from the butterscotch, with wood spice and hints of rye grain. The grassiness which I noticed initially gave way to a more herbaceous quality which reminded me of heather with a light licorice scent melded into it …”
