Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Cranberry Lime Mojito

For my American friends, and in honour of the American Thanksgiving which arrives tomorrow, I thought I would put an autumnal spin on the classic Mojito by introducing a dollop of Cranberry flavour via Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry and Lime.

Full disclosure here, the original recipe that was sent to me by the US Smirnoff Media Team for this remarkable indulgence suggests Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka as the alcohol base for the serving. However, I decided to stick closer to the heart of the true mojito and have recommended Captain Morgan’s White Rum in place of the suggested Vodka. The recipe works well either way; but I prefer the extra character and flavour that white rum brings to the cocktail.

Cranberry Lime Mojito

1 can (12 oz.)  Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry Lime
1 oz. Captain Morgan White Rum
0.5 oz. Simple Syrup
3 oz. Cranberry juice
Fresh Cranberries
Fresh Mint Leaves
Lime Wedges
Ice

Muddle Mint and a Lime Wedge into the bottom of a high ball glass
Add Simple Syrup followed by Ice
Pour in Cranberry Juice
Complete with Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry Lime
Garnish with fresh Lime Wedges, Cranberries and Mint Leaves

“… The initial nose surprised me too as there was an ever so light mustiness rising the from the glass, as well as very apparent aromas of a mild caramel, green banana, peppery zest and light sandalwood spices. I was expecting the ‘5 times distilled’ white to have more of a ‘vodka-like’ nose, and am pleased to be completely wrong on that count …”

Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Cranberry Lime Fresher

This is the second cocktail in my Fall Cocktail Bazaar and like the first one shared last week, it has been created with one of the new Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer premium malt beverages. These malt beverages contain natural flavours, zero added sugar, no artificial sweeteners, and no preservatives. They have been produced as a more healthy alternative to traditional vodka premixes. This week I am working with Smirnoff Cranberry Lime Spiked Sparkling Seltzer which features light flavours of cranberry and lime within the malty flavour of the spiked seltzer.

Cranberry and Lime is of course the winning combination of flavours found in the modern classic cocktail, the Cosmopolitan. So my thought was to work within that framework to create a tall refreshing alternative. I call my cocktail, the Cranberry Lime Fresher.

Cranberry Lime Fresher

1 oz. Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1/2 oz. Cranberry Juice
1/2 oz. Lime Juice
Ice
Smirnoff Cranberry Lime Spiked Sparkling Seltzer
Lime for Garnish

Add the Smirnoff Vodka, Triple Sec, Cranberry juice and Lime juice into a metal shaker with ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Pour the chilled contents into a serving glass with ice
Lengthen with Smirnoff Cranberry Lime Spiked Sparkling Seltzer
Garnish with a slice of lime

Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Berry Lemonade Mule

Recently the folks at Smirnoff (well actually it was one of their media companies) reached out to me wondering if I was willing to feature some of their new flavoured products including the Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Malt Beverages on The Rum Howler Blog. I found the idea rather interesting. Although I am primarily a reviewer of spirits, I do share cocktail recipes from time to time as well. So I responded by saying that if they could send me product samples as well as recipe suggestions which I could make at home, then I would share the recipes which I liked in a sort of Cocktail Bazaar during the fall.

One of the first recipes they sent me was a Mule-style serving which mixes Smirnoff’s Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Lemonade with Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, Lemonade and Ginger Beer. It is certainly a recipe which is easy to prepare at home. So I mixed one up and decided that this delicious combination should be the first recipe for my Fall Cocktail Bazaar.

It’s a dandy recipe, I suggest you try one as well.

Berry Lemonade Mule

2 oz. Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade
1 oz. Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1 oz. Lemonade
1 oz. Ginger Beer
Ice
Raspberry and Lemon for Garnish

Add Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade, Smirnoff No. 21 vodka, and lemonade to a tall mixing glass
Add ice and stir until well chilled.
Pour over ice into a mule mug
Top with Ginger Beer
Garnish with a fresh raspberry and lemon
