#Top100Rums of 2017: #66 Zaya Gran Reserva

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 17, 2017

Zaya Gran Reserva Rum is a brand currently owned by Infinium Spirits. This rum brand was originally distilled and aged in Guatemala, but in 2008, Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala entered into a distribution arrangement with the Diageo spirits conglomerate which elevated some local brands such as Zacapa Rum, but which left other Guatemalan brands like Zaya without a similar arrangement. Because the Zaya brand was gaining a lot of momentum as a luxury sipping rum, the manufacture of Zaya was moved to Trinidad and Tobago where it is now produced by Trinidad Distillers Ltd.

Zaya Gran Reserva is apparently constructed from a secret recipe of several well aged rums to meet a specific taste profile which is very similar to the original Guatemalan rum. All of the rums in the Zaya blend are aged for a minimum of 12 years in small oak casks.

Here is a link to my recently re-scored review of the number 66 rum of 2017:

Review: Zaya Gran Reserva

“… rich vanilla, oak spice and pipe tobacco leading out into the air above the glass. Sweet caramel winds through the breezes, and I seem to catch accents of dry fruit, marmalade, marzipan and banana peel … “

#Top100Rums of 2017: #67 Old Monk Gold Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 16, 2017

Old Monk is an aged dark rum produced by Mohan Meakin Limited in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. According to the information I received from the importer, the Gold Reserve 12 Year Blended Rum is a molasses distilled rum, aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks (in the tropical climate of India) and then blended to be a smoother, more refined version of the flagship,  Old Monk Very Old Vatted XXX Rum (7 Years Old Blended).

The brand receives very little attention from the press, and does not appear to be represented in any advertising campaigns which I have seen. Rather Old Monk appears to rely upon word of mouth and customer loyalty for its sales. Word of mouth must be good as the Old Monk brand is (again according to information I received) the second largest selling aged dark rum in the world.

Here is a link to the #67 Rum on my list of the Best 100:

Review: Old Monk Gold Reserve Rum

“… the breezes also bring me indications of black pepper, cinnamon and cloves with a light, but firm vanilla accent. As the glass sits, the aroma deepens bringing forward dark brown sugary smells and rich baking spices with impressions of cigar tobacco and crushed walnuts …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 13, 2017

Pineapple Rum was quite a popular delicacy in the 19th century. In fact, in Charles Dickens first serial novel The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (published in 19 monthly magazine instalments, from March 1836 to October 1837), Pineapple Rum is the preferred tipple of the fictitious Reverend Stiggins, who while publicly preaching temperance, secretly enjoys his pineapple rum, usually mixed with hot tea.

Alexander Gabriel (President and Owner, of Cognac Ferrand) in collaboration with Dave Wondrich (cocktail guru and author of Imbibe) researched the original recipes of Pineapple Rum, and then set about to re-create this lost libation.

Here is a link to the Number 70 Rum of 2017:

Review: Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum

“… Rum-like scents of butterscotch toffee, vanilla and baking spice (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves) lead out with both orange peel and yummy citrus pineapple scents riding along. There are light accents of almond and a mild sweep of tobacco which complete the nose …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – #72 Seven Fathoms Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 11, 2017

Cayman Spirits Co. began distilling spirits in 2008 at the George Town Harbour Distillery on Grand Cayman island. With a small single column still, the company uses local ingredients (including fresh cane juice from locally grown cane harvested on Grand Cayman’s East End) to produce their rum distillate in a batch style. The Seven Fathoms Rum distillate is then matured in American White oak bourbon barrels in a process that involves aging the rum seven fathoms deep under water in a secret location off the coast of the Grand Cayman island where the rolling waves rock the rum barrels in much the same way that they would be rocked in the cargo hold of a ship that was transporting the rum across the sea.

Here is a link to the review for my#72 Rum of 2017:

Review: Seven Fathoms Rum

“… Vanilla and cinnamon baking spices appeared as well as a nice almond scent which moved to marzipan as I examined the glass. Bits of tobacco and hints of maple round out the aroma which has me quite impressed …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – #76 Ron Marques del Valle

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 7, 2017

Ron Marques del Valle (8 Years) is produced in Colombia by Industria de Licores del Valle. I was unable to learn much about this distiller of rum, however, the back of my sample bottle makes the following statement about this particular rum:

“Ron Marques is the result of the most refined sugar cane extract, distilled with the purest water from the Andes and aged in oak barrels for 8 years, this conjunction of events gives this unique Rum an intense amber colour, a fine viscosity, an excellent depth of mature aromas and a smooth taste”

Here is a link to my #76 Rum of 2017:

Review: Ron Marques del Valle

” … Oaky spices and tannins have melded with the butterscotch and the resulting flavour seems to be closer to the oak side of the spectrum than to the butterscotch. Some dry fruit flavours appear (I am thinking dried apricots and peaches as well as some raisin-like impressions), and a mild woody nuttiness lies underneath …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – #83 Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 30, 2017

Bacardi’s Oakheart Original Spiced Rum is one of those spirits which shows firm signs of its age in the glass. It is produced from a blend of column distilled rums which have been aged in charred oak barrels. This aged rum is then spiced to reach a flavour profile which walks the path of a vanilla accented by fragrant spices the combination of which is meant to compliment the aged rum but not to dominate.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum

“… When I allowed the glass to breathe, the vanilla notes deepened. I also begin to sense some maple in those breezes above my glass and the baking spices have firmed up with more obvious impressions of nutmeg and cinnamon …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – #90 Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 23, 2017

Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced Rum has just begun to appear on store shelves throughout North America. Building upon the success of last year’s release of Captain Morgan Cannon Blast (see my review here), Captain Morgan is adding a new Limited Edition Spiced Rum to the shots category with their brand new Pumpkin Spiced Rum, Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Limited Edition Pumpkin Spiced Rum, the first pumpkin spiced rum offering to ever hit shelves

Here is a link to my review for the Rum Howler #90 Rum of 2017:

Review: Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced Rum

“… The aroma from the glass is very nice. I let my wife have a nice sniff, not letting her know what was inside. She immediately smiled and said my rum reminded her of her pumpkin spiced chai tea that she loves. I guess you could say that Captain Morgan nailed it …”

#Top100Rums – #95 Harbour Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 18, 2017

The Yongehurst Distillery is a brand new Micro-Distillery located at 346 Westmoreland Ave near Dupont and Dovercourt in Toronto, Ontario. The facility is owned by long-time friends, Rocco Panacci and John-Paul Sacco who are making what just might be Toronto’s first micro-distilled rum upon their brand new small pot/column combination still.

The rum that Yongehurst is producing is unique (one of the first micro distilled rum produced in Canada) and perhaps the first rum produced in Canada which is completely unaged (in Canada, by law, all rum sold must be aged for a minimum of one year).

Here is a link to the review of the #95 Cane Spirit on my Rum Howler – Top 100 Rums of 2017 countdown:

Review: Harbour Rum (Yongehurst Distillery)

“… A light sweetness which reminds me of cotton candy drifts upwards into the breezes with feathery indications of mint and menthol alongside …”

Introducing: The Rum Howler Top 100 Rums of 2017

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 14, 2017

Yesterday (on Twitter) I kicked off my annual Rum Howler Rum Countdown which is better than ever with a full 100 rums counted down from #100 to #1.That’s right, 100 wonderful Cane Spirits..

As well as being the largest such list I have ever compiled for the spirit we call rum, this list is also current. I have also reviewed and/or re-tasted each of these rums within the past three years. All Rum reviews were based upon bottle samples either purchased by myself or provided to me by industry. I should mention as well that all of the spirits on this list are available in North America at this time.

Unlike other years, I am not planning to reveal every rum with a front page posting on my website, instead I have begun the Countdown on Twitter (#Top100Rums). However, for those who are regular readers of mine, once or twice a week I will introduce one of the drams from the list with a full review for you to enjoy. When my daily Twitter Reveal brings me to the Top 25 Rums of 2017 in early December, (just before Christmas), I will reveal the best 25 Rum Spirits available in North America with daily postings here on the Rum Howler Blog. (The Best rum Review Website in the World!)

Just some of the great rums of 2017

This means that to follow the entire list daily, you will need to first follow me on twitter (Rum Howler on Twitter). And then in December follow my postings here on my website.

Of course you may also follow the countdown by visiting my Reveal page.

The Rum Howler – Top 100 Rums of 2017

The Reveal Page will be updated weekly through September, October and November and then daily in December.
