Review: Central City Peeled Orange Liqueur

Central City Brewers & Distillers began as a Brewpub in 2003 at Central City in Surrey BC. The original home of their first brewery can still be found at the original Central City Pub. Today, their main brewery and distillery operations are just down the hill from that original location in a state of the art, 65,000 square foot brewing facility.

Their Peeled Orange Liqueur is produced from malted barley which has been is aged for three years in American oak. The malt spirit is infused with orange peels, and acceding to the producers may be served on the rocks or enjoyed as a orange liqueur in your favourite cocktail.

“… When the glass is brought to the nose one notices immediately that this in not your normal orange liqueur. Notes of grain spice and hints of oak accompany the zesty orange scents that have risen into the air. Think of sticky sweet orange marmalade melded with Speyside whisky and that is close to what I am sensing in the breezes …”

Review: Manituo Orange and Sumac Liqueur

picador-sam_2926Legend Distilling is a small craft distillery in the heart of B.C. Okanagan Wine Country. Owner’s Dawn and Doug Lennie moved to Naramata 11 years ago and witnessed the progression of the wine business happening all around them. They were already running their own businesses, but had a dream of working together to build a new company they could share. Whiskey was always been a passion of Doug’s and he had also been watching what was going on with craft distilling in the US. Both Dawn and he decided that spirits would be a great business to bring to the community as a compliment to all the great wines available around them. For Dawn and Doug, offering something new in the area was key. This included their unique location along the Naramata Bench, as other distilleries were being located in more industrial areas.

The orange liqueur produced by Legend Distilling arrives with a bit of a twist in its flavour profile. As well as being orange flavoured the spirit also carries the flavour of the locally foraged wild Sumac berries.

“… While the orange/tangerine quality is firm and appealing, there is also a lightly bitter/acidic undercurrent which balances the sweetness beautifully allowing me to sip the liqueur without ice to great enjoyment. There is also a light earthy quality reminiscent of angelica root which seems to elevate the spirit …”

Review: Cheshire Triple Sec

cheshire-sam_2937This year I plan to sprinkle a few liqueur reviews in between my Rum Howler Award postings, and I will start with a new Orange Liqueur my wife bought for me this past Christmas. I had asked her to pick up a bottle of Bols Triple Sec which is one of my favoured Orange Curacao mixers, but instead she brought home Cheshire Triple Sec. As I was expecting Bols, I decided to do a little comparing between the two when I wrote the review.

Cheshire Triple Sec is an American spirit produced in Minnesota apparently for the Prestige Wine Group. I could find very little information regarding the spirit. What I do know I gleaned from the back label of the bottle. According to the ingredients list the orange liqueur  is produced from alcohol, water, sugar and flavour. it is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and is part of the Preferred Selection at the Western Canadian Liquor Depot chain of stores.

“… in the interest of a good review I decided to make two Margarita cocktails side by side. One with Cheshire Triple Sec, and one with the last of my Bols Triple Sec. I used a clean Blanco Tequila which I quite like called Avion, and fresh lime juice for both cocktails. Avion is a really good tequila for clean Margaritas and it was no surprise to me that both cocktails tasted good. However there was a decided difference between the two …”

Review: Triple Sec (Meaghers)

Today, I am completing my series of Orange Liqueurs which has comprised a very representative sampling of category including several of the major Triple Sec and Orange Curacao brands in the marketplace. My final review in the series is a Canadian product produced by Corby called simply Triple Sec (Meaghers).

Meaghers has been producing traditional liqueurs in Canada (in a variety of flavours) since 1873. In fact they were the first domestic distiller to produce a full line of flavoured liqueurs. In 1978, Corby purchased Meaghers Distillery Limited of Montreal absorbing the Meaghers brands into the Corby portfolio. Their Triple Sec (formerly called Grand Curacao), is a traditional orange flavoured liqueur bottled at 35 % alcohol by volume. It is widely available in Canada and has some distribution in the US.

“… the aroma from the liqueur is quite nice. The orange notes, although readily recognizable, are tainted just a little by a light earthiness. I do not sense any clear differentiation between the sweet orange notes and the more bitter orange peel which is evident in other orange liqueurs. Instead, the sweet and the bitter orange seem to be melded together …”

Review: Cointreau

SAM_0717 CointreauAdolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau first established their distillery in 1849. Although their first success was with a wild cherry liqueur called Guignolet (still available in France); they are more famous for the production of their sweet orange liqueur, Cointreau which was first distilled by Edouard-Jean’s son Edouard. The first bottles of Cointreau were sold in 1875, and by the early 1900′s, sales had reached 800,000 bottles per year. The brand is now owned by Rémy Martin, with annual estimated sales of 13 million bottles, world-wide.

According to the Cointreau website, this orange liqueur is produced according to a secret recipe which includes sun-dried orange peels, alcohol, sugar and water. It is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

“… The nose is very nice with a clear orange notes radiating from the glass into the breezes. I catch wiffs of both fresh-cut Valencia oranges, and what smells to me like the peel of both Mandarin and Curacao oranges. I also note a distinct impression of lemon drop candies wandering through those clear orange notes …”

A few years ago, I designed a bar drink for Old Parr Superior Whisky, which uses Cointreau in conjunction with lime juice and  Orange and Mango Soda. The cocktail called, the Scottish Tumbler, has been included at the end of the review for your enjoyment!
