24 Days of Rum (#9) – William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum (Madeira)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 9, 2019

I have reached Rum number 9 in my Christmas Advent, a mild Agricole-like rum from Madeira. Madeira (an autonomous region of Portugal) is an archipelago comprising 4 islands approximately 520 kilometers off the northwest coast of Africa.

William Hinton founded his Distillery in 1845 producing his rum from local sugar cane juice. The Distillery had great success and by 1920 was processing 600 tons of sugar cane daily. Unfortunately, this was the peak of the Distillery’s rum production and a decline eventually saw the distillery cease production in 1986.

Fortunately, in 2006, William Hinton’s heirs relaunched the distillery using an alembic still. Their William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum is produced from sugar cane syrup which has undergone a special prolonged fermentation process and aged in French oak barrels.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the ninth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum

“… Light and floral almost delicate with a mild herbal quality, hints of camphor, ginger and cinnamon as well as a light light fruitiness of banana and green grape, perhaps a touch of red licorice …”

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. As indicated in my previously published review (here) This Rum Advent Calendar is a highly recommended gift for the rum enthusiast.

24 Days of Rum (#8) – Ratu Dark 5 Year Old Rum (Fiji)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 8, 2019

Its off to Fiji as I sample Rum #8 in the 24 Days of Rum Advent Calendar from 1423 World Class Spirits. Ratu Rums are produced by the Rum Co. of Fiji since 1980  at their distillery in Lautoka Fiji. There are three rums in there line-up at this time, the 5 year old Ratu Spiced, the 8 year old Ratu Signature, and the 5 Year Old Ratu Dark.

This is the review for the Dark Rum which has been filtered through charcoal made from coconut husks and aged locally for five years in oak barrels. Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the eighth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ratu Dark 5 Year Old Rum

“… Treacle dominates, Oak spice, molasses as well as baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon and clove). A hit of licorice and menthol as well …”

Chimo!

24 Days of Rum (#7) – By the Dutch Batavia Arrack (Indonesian Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2019

Day 7 of my 24 Days of Rum advent brings me to the Netherlands by the way of Indonesia. By The Dutch Batavia Arrack is an Indonesian Rum made from local cane distilled on the Island of Java, which was then shipped to Amsterdam to be aged and then bottled in Schiedem which is located in the Netherlands

This is a 100 % sugar-cane based spirit produced from of a range of Pot distilled spirits. Traditional Bativia Arrack uses a fermentation process includes the addition of local (red) rice. This sets it apart from traditional Rum and some jurisdictions refuse to allow Bativia Arrack to be labeled as rum even though the base material is sugar-cane.

By The Dutch Bativia Arrack has been produced in the traditional method, however, for the purpose of this review, I will refer to the spirit as both Batavia Arrack and as Indonesian Rum.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the seventh spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: By the Dutch Batavia Arrack

“… A light undercurrent of vegetal aroma give the spirit a hint of Cachaca beside fine oak spice, almond, butterscotch, ginger, orange peel, banana, coconut and melon …”

Chimo!

24 Days of Rum (#6) – Pixan 8 Anos Rum (Mexico)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2019

Day 6 of my 24 Days of Rum advent takes me to Destileria Espiritus del Norte a relatively new distillery located in Monterrey in northeastern Mexico where they produce Pixan Rum. Apparently Pixan comes to us linguistically from the Mayan language and it is a word which roughly means ‘Spirit which gives life‘.

Pixan 8 Anos is their most premium rum. Several retail sites I visited indicated that the rum is produced from molasses upon a double column still and then aged for up to 8 years in American oak barrels which previously contained bourbon.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the sixth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Pixan 8 Anos Rum

“… Oak spice continues to pour out, heightened butterscotch sweetness with vanilla and hints of sweet and sour fruit, bits of menthol and herbal grass …”

24 Days of Rum (#5) – Santos Dumont XO (Brazil)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 5, 2019

Day 5 of my Rum Advent reveals Santos Dumont XO Rum from Brazil. The rum actually has a Danish producer, A.H.Riise Spirits which (in a roundabout way explained in the review) is named for Albert Heinrich Riise who established rum production of rum on Saint Thomas in the Danish West Indies (now the United States Virgin Islands) in 1838.

Santos Dumont XO Rum is made from freshly pressed virgin sugarcane honey, distilled in old potstills and matured in three different types of oak, ex bourbon, ex Port and ex Pedro Ximenez casks. The spirit carries no age statement, however, if the XO designation has been used in the same manner as for Cognac (we are by no means certain of this), then we can expect that the rum has been aged for about 6 years.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the #5 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Santos Dumont XO Rum

“… Oak spice pushes through the initial sweetness, we still have a lot of sweetness with candied oranges, canned apricots, and some coconut as well as some mushy banana …”

Chimo!
