Review: Six Saints Caribbean Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 4, 2020

Six Saints Rum is apparently a spirit produced an the Isle of Grenada and is named for the island’s six saintly parishes; Saint Patrick, Saint Mark, Saint John, Saint Andrew, Saint George, and Saint David. It is column distilled (from stills  which were originally from Glasgow, Scotland) using only pure ingredients. The Distillery is located in the south of the island, near the capital St. George, and apparently has been producing rum since 1937.  The resulting rum distillate (unsweetened) is typically (and tropically) aged for 3 to 5 years in ex bourbon barrels and bottled in small batches at 41.7 % abv.

Review: Six Saints Caribbean Rum

“… Light and dry across the palate with a fine bite from both alcohol and oak spice. Vanilla, almond and butterscotch play with citrus zest and fine peppery spices. Bits of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger mingle within …”

Please enjoy my review of this clean, crisp rum.

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2020

I have been working though the rum selection in 1423 World Class Spirits advent calendar 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box with the aim of providing a short review for each of the selection throughout the month of December. On day three however, when I pulled out my small sample of Ron Roble’s Viejo Maestro Extra Anejo, I found myself puzzled as this rum is not listed on the Ron Roble Viejo website and search though I did, I could find only one reference to the rum on an unfamiliar Czech retail website, and that website did not even have a bottle shot to show me. My conclusion is that the Maestro must be either very new, or an exclusive bottling of 1423 World Class Spirits (or both). I decided that it might be best to save my thoughts on the Maestro until I could gather better information. So I am leaving that bottle sealed and have decided to repost my review for Ron Roble’s selection from last year in the Calendar Advent, Ron Roble Viejo Extra Anejo.

Ron Roble Viejo Rums are produced in Venezuela through the artistry of Ron Noble’s Master Rum Blender, Giorgio Melis, a Chemical Engineer with more than 50 years experience in the spirits industry. The company’s rums are produced from from locally grown sugar cane molasses using a 5 column distillation process and aged in a traditional manner is oak barrels without topping the oak barrels or replenishment of the Angel’s share.

According to the company website, their best reserves from 8 to 12 Years are blended to create the Ron Roble Extra Anejo Rum.

Here is a link to my review published last year on December 21:

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

“… Oak spices deepen and thicken, toffee and dark brown sugar come into focus mixing with baking spices, there are hints of marzipan and apricot jam. The breezes are very enticing …”

24 Days of Rum (#24) – Ron Abuelo Rum Napolean XV (Panama)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 24, 2019

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We have reached the end of the 24 Days Of Rum Advent Calendar review series, and this ending brings us to the Varela Hermanos Distillery  in the Republic of Panama. (I can almost hear Van Halen singing in the background.)

Ron Abuelo Rum Napolean XV is part of the Ron Abuelo Finish Collection which is a family of rums which have been aged in white American Oak barrels and then finished in either sherry, cognac or porto barrels. The name of each brand represents both the added wood character of the finish, and also the places that the finishing barrels came from, Oloroso for Jerez and Spain, Napoleon for Cognac and France, and Tawny for Porto and Portugal.

Ron Abuelo Napolean 15 Anos is a well aged rum which was aged first in Ex-American oak barrels and then finished in French Cognac barrels.

24 Days of Rum (#23) – Cihuatan Reserva Especial 12 (El Salvador)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 23, 2019

With one day left to go, in my 2019 Christmas Rum Advent I have arrived in the Central America, specifically the Republic of El Salvador (Republic of the Savior), which is the smallest continental country in the Americas, and the most heavily populated by population density. The rum we are examining today is Cihuatan Reserva Especial 12 which is produced by El Salvador’s first ever rum distillery, Licorera Cihuatán.

According to the producer’s website all of the distilleries rums are handcrafted in El Salvador, and with respect to their Cihuatán Reserva Especial 12 the website additionally tells us:

We have taken our aging methods further to bring you a complex rum, awarded all over the world. Cihuatán 12 Years is proudly handcrafted in the Cihuatán Valley, from the seed of the sugarcane to the bottle.

Day 22 finds me remaining in South America as travel west from Venezuela to Ecuador a country which borders on the Pacific Ocean just at the equator. In fact, Ecuador can be translated to mean “Republic of the Equator‘. (I got that tidbit from Wikipedia)

Ron Canuto (7 Anos) is produced in Ecuador, at the Destilería Zhumir C. Ltda., (formerly Destilería La Playa) which was founded by Doña Hortensia Mata Ordóñez in 1966.The rum is produced from molasses and aged in oak barrels before being bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.
