Review: Ron Esclavo XO Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 12, 2020

Ron Esclavo XO is a premium rum produced in the Dominican Republic and distributed by 1423 World Class Spirits based in Denmark. According to the 1423 World Class Spirits website, Ron Esclavo Rums are produced by Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos who harvest their own sugarcane from within Dominica. Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos is the largest producer of alcohol in the Dominican Republic, and thereby the company plays a significant role in the Dominican community

The rums which make up the Ron Esclavo Blend were column distilled and were aged up to 15 years (some of the rums in the blend would be younger) in both American and French oak barrels.

Here is a Link to my Review:

Review: Ron Esclavo XO Rum

“… Oak spice, dark brown sugar and baking spices (vanilla, allspice and cinnamon). Lightly smokey with scents of dried fruits and raisins. Tobacco and a smidgen of brine and tar. Marzipan, apricots and crushed walnuts …”

Please enjoy the review.

Review: Cane Island Australia Rum (4 Year Old)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2020

Cane Island is a rum brand owned by Infinity Spirits, who appear to be based in Amsterdam. The purpose of the Cane Island Brand appears to be to showcase Rums which are sourced from a single distillery from iconic Island rum nations in the Caribbean and elsewhere in the world. Each one of these countries has a long history of rum production with their own styles and traditions.

Cane Island Australian Rum was distilled at Beenleigh Rum Distillery. If you go to the Beenleigh Distillery website you will see that the claim to be the oldest operating distillery in Austrailia who have been producing rum since before the invention of Coca Cola. The rum is distributed by 1423 World Class Spirits (based in Denmark) and according to their website, Cane Island Australian Rum was distilled on a pot still, matured for 4 years in a tropical climate using former American oak bourbon barrels.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Cane Island Australia Rum

“… The rum carries a nice oaky sweetness across the palate. Herbal pot still flavours meld into the flavour profile nicely as do flavours of both marzipan and orange marmalade. Vanillans and caramel serve to keep the heat down, and the rum has a heavy bodied texture that feels nice in the mouth …”

Please enjoy my review of the excellent 4 year old rum.

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2020

I have been working though the rum selection in 1423 World Class Spirits advent calendar 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box with the aim of providing a short review for each of the selection throughout the month of December. On day three however, when I pulled out my small sample of Ron Roble’s Viejo Maestro Extra Anejo, I found myself puzzled as this rum is not listed on the Ron Roble Viejo website and search though I did, I could find only one reference to the rum on an unfamiliar Czech retail website, and that website did not even have a bottle shot to show me. My conclusion is that the Maestro must be either very new, or an exclusive bottling of 1423 World Class Spirits (or both). I decided that it might be best to save my thoughts on the Maestro until I could gather better information. So I am leaving that bottle sealed and have decided to repost my review for Ron Roble’s selection from last year in the Calendar Advent, Ron Roble Viejo Extra Anejo.

Ron Roble Viejo Rums are produced in Venezuela through the artistry of Ron Noble’s Master Rum Blender, Giorgio Melis, a Chemical Engineer with more than 50 years experience in the spirits industry. The company’s rums are produced from from locally grown sugar cane molasses using a 5 column distillation process and aged in a traditional manner is oak barrels without topping the oak barrels or replenishment of the Angel’s share.

According to the company website, their best reserves from 8 to 12 Years are blended to create the Ron Roble Extra Anejo Rum.

Here is a link to my review published last year on December 21:

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

“… Oak spices deepen and thicken, toffee and dark brown sugar come into focus mixing with baking spices, there are hints of marzipan and apricot jam. The breezes are very enticing …”

Review: Companero Extra Anejo Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 1, 2020

Companero Extra Anejo Rum is a rum brand owned by 1423 Worldclass Spirits. The spirit was distilled in Panama (at an undisclosed distillery) and is sold in Canada through the LCBO .  It is also the rum featured in the number 1 slot in the company’s 2020 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box Rum advent calendar.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Companero Extra Anejo Rum

“… Heavy Bodied sweet rum full of chocolate flavour.  I like the rum, but I am annoyed that the spirit is labeled as a extra anejo rum; but it seems obvious that the spirit has been flavoured and sweetened. I suspect it should properly be labeled as a flavoured rum …”

Please enjoy the review, Hopefully time will permit me to complete more spirit reviews as we run up to Christmas.

24 Days of Rum (#24) – Ron Abuelo Rum Napolean XV (Panama)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 24, 2019

Merry Christmas Everyone!

We have reached the end of the 24 Days Of Rum Advent Calendar review series, and this ending brings us to the Varela Hermanos Distillery  in the Republic of Panama. (I can almost hear Van Halen singing in the background.)

Ron Abuelo Rum Napolean XV is part of the Ron Abuelo Finish Collection which is a family of rums which have been aged in white American Oak barrels and then finished in either sherry, cognac or porto barrels. The name of each brand represents both the added wood character of the finish, and also the places that the finishing barrels came from, Oloroso for Jerez and Spain, Napoleon for Cognac and France, and Tawny for Porto and Portugal.

Ron Abuelo Napolean 15 Anos is a well aged rum which was aged first in Ex-American oak barrels and then finished in French Cognac barrels.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the No. 24 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ron Abuelo Rum Napolean XV

“…Smells become deeper and richer, a bit of port cigar mingles with Christmas cake and rich baking spices …”
