Review: 1800 Reserva Reposado Tequila

1800 ReposadoThe 1800 Tequila brand is owned by the Beckmann Family, who also own the Jose Cuervo brand. And indeed, according to the nom identifier upon the bottle (Nom 1122 CRT) the brand is produced at the same facility, the Casa Cuervo, S.A. de C.V. which is located in the central lowland tequila region of Jalisco Mexico. The 1800 Reserva Reposado is produced using piñas from 100 % Weber Blue Agave (8-12 year old) and is aged in a combination of American and French Oak barrels at least six months.

“… When I nose the glass it yields mild butterscotch aromas, and behind them are soft punky vegetal smells of lowland agave. The earthy aroma is reminiscent of baked squash and grilled pineapple. There are also unusual hints of cooked celery within the vegetal nature of the agave aroma (maybe a bit of water cress too). As I gave the glass time to breathe some peppery notes began to break free from the fruity agave as well as hints of vanilla and cinnamon, and perhaps a dusting of milk chocolate …”

Review: El Jimador Silver Tequila

El Jimador Tequila is owned by Brown-Froman. The Brand is produced thirty miles from Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, in the town of Amatitan, at Brown – Forman Tequila Distillery Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V. which is also referred to as Hacienda Herradura. The Hacienda also produces the more premium Herradura brand as well as Suave 35 and Antiguo. The Jimador tequila is named to pay homage to the jimadors who harvest agave. After it is harvested, the agave is cooked in clay ovens. The juice is extracted after cooking using steel bladed shredders after which it is distilled on old copper pot stills.

Because Hacienda Herradura is located in the Central Lowlands of Jalisco rather than in the Highlands we can expect a more earthy style of tequila than which would be produced in the Highlands where the agave tends to produce a spirit with higher citrus notes and a sharper squeal of peppery spice.

“… The breezes above the glass brought me nice citrus notes (lime in particular) which were joined by an earthy agave scent which seemed to hint at boiled celery and baked squash (maybe some grilled pineapple as well) …”

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Reposado Tequila

Leyenda del Milagro Reposado Tequila is produced from estate-grown 100% Blue Weber Agave harvested from the highlands of Jalisco. As a highland tequila,we can expect the Milagro Tequila to exhibit strong fruity citrus notes and to have a little hot pepper in the delivery and in the finish. (This is as opposed to lowland tequila which has stronger earthier flavours of agave and less hot pepper.)

The spirit is produced at Tequilera Milagro, S.A. de C.V. (Nom 1559) where the agave is roasted in brick ovens made from the same volcanic-rich soil where the highland agave flourishes in Jalisco. The roasted agave is shredded to extract the cooked juice which (unlike other tequila brands which are double distilled) is triple distilled in a Copper Pot Still. This makes Milagro Reposado Tequila a lighter spirit than we would typically expect.

“… I discovered a lightly sweet, mildly punky agave aroma lifting from the glass. There is a savory quality with fruity smells reminiscent of baked butternut squash. This is complemented by light caramel, hints of oak, some scattered black pepper and citrus zest. There is also a lovely earthy quality which brings me impressions of black licorice and angelica as well as oolong tea …”

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver

According to the Jose Cuervo website, it all began in 1795 when Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo began to commercially produce his Mexcal wine spirit based upon an official permit from the King of Spain. By 1812, he had established La Rojena, the distillery which to this day still produces Jose Cuervo Tequila. By 1844, Jose Cuervo Tequila was being distributed within Mexico, and in 1873 the earliest known documented export of the Tequila outside of Mexico occurred when 3 bottles of Jose Cuervo were transported across the United States border by donkey. Those exports have continued (although no longer by donkey), and now the Jose Cuervo brand is the best-selling tequila brand in the entire world.

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver was released in 2011. It is a true 100% blue agave tequila. It is produced at the Casa Cuervo, S.A. de C.V. which is located in the central lowland tequila region of Jalisco Mexico. (the same distillery which produces all of the Jose Cuervo brands as well as the 1800 Tequila Brand).

“… When I nose the glass the scents and smells in the breezes seem somewhat muted consistent with lowland agave which tends to be more earthy and vegetal than Highland tequila. I note soft punky aroma of baked squash and grilled pineapple. There are also light indications of a vague cane-like sweetness, hints of vanilla, and wisps of lemon zest …”

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Silver Tequila

“… The initial aroma is full of rich earthy agave which brings impressions of baked zucchini and boiled celery into focus. There are also hints of damp punky balsam wood. The typical notes of spicy black pepper and fruity citrus zest are muted somewhat which gives the agave more expression than I typically notice in highland tequila …”
