Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Raspberry Be-Dazzler

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 12, 2018

Although Smirnoff Vodka provided me with the bulk of the samples and recipes for my Cocktail Bazaar, some of the other spirit brands owned by Diageo also stepped up as well. One of those brands was Bulleit who sent me several recipes for their Bulleit Bourbon and Bullet Rye. One recipe which caught my eye was called the Be-Dazzler which mixed Bulleit Bourbon with Grapefruit Juice and Campari, which was in turn lengthened with Fanta Strawberry.

I liked that the recipe provided an unusual complement of flavours; but unfortunately I am not a fan of strawberries or strawberry flavoured foods and beverages. My wife, who knows me well, suggested that I substitute a raspberry flavoured beverage in place of the strawberry. Since Fanta makes both a strawberry and a raspberry soda, the switch was quite easy.

So this is my take of the Be-Dazzler, you can try it with Raspberry soda, or in its original form with Strawberry.

Raspberry Be-Dazzler

1 oz Bulleit Bourbon
1/2 oz Grapefruit Juice
1/2 oz Campari (Italian Bitter Aperitif)
Ice
1 oz Fanta Raspberry
Wedge of Lemon

Add the first three ingredient into a metal shaker with ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Strain into an ice filled tumbler
Garnish with a wedge of Lemon

Enjoy Responsibly!

Note: Bulleit Bourbon is produced at the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The brand traces its heritage back to 1830 when tavern keeper Augustus Bulleit (after a few experimental trials) created the brand and began to market it locally and eventually to areas outside of Kentucky. According to the Bulleit Bourbon website, the spirit is produced from a rye heavy mash with of course corn as well as malted barley. It is bottled at 45% for the North American Market.

Review: Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey

“… As I let the glass breathe, the woody aroma of new oak remained strong, but it did not overpower the honeycomb and toffee scents which remained firm. The breezes above the glass also contain some nice rye accents, and some soft vanilla …”

Cocktail Bazaar: Green Apple Smash

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 21, 2018

If you’ve been following my Cocktail Bazaar you have probably figured out that my cocktail suggestions have been inspired by Smirnoff. Their US media team has sent me an assortment of samples of Smirnoff Vodka, Smirnoff Ice Premium Malt Beverages, the new Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzers as well as some Smirnoff Flavoured Vodkas. I was also sent a plethora of recipes to try out. From those recipes, I chose the ones which suited my skills as a home bartender to share with you.

My autumn Cocktail Bazaar continues with a look at Smirnoff Ice Green Apple. I should point out that the Smirnoff Ice brand is quite different here in Canada from what it is south of the border in the United States. That is because in Canada the brand is sold as a Premixed Vodka Beverage. However, in the US, the brand is instead a Premixed Premium Malt Beverage based not upon a distilled vodka, but rather a brewed let me say ‘beer-like’ product. This means that the flavour profile of Smirnoff Ice products in the US contains a ribbon of beer-like malt flavour that is absent the Canadian Smirnoff Ice branded product.

As indicated earlier, my samples were sent to me from the US-based Smirnoff Media Team. This means the recipe I am sharing will taste quite different when mixed with the Canadian version of Smirnoff Ice Green Apple. That should not dissuade however, as the recipe works well either way.

Here is a nice fall recipe which mixes Smirnoff Ice Green Apple with one of my favourite whiskeys, Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey.

Green Apple Smash

1 bottle Smirnoff Ice Green Apple
4 oz  Ginger Beer
4 oz  Bulleit Bourbon
Ice
Rosemary for garnish

In a mixing glass, combine Smirnoff Ice Green Apple, Ginger Beer and Bourbon with Ice.
Stir until chilled
Fill a glass with crushed ice
Strain cocktail over ice

Garnish with a sprig of rosemary

Enjoy Responsibly!

Review: Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 31, 2013

SAM_0549 BuilletBulleit Bourbon is produced at the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The brand traces its heritage back to 1830 when tavern keeper Augustus Bulleit (after a few experimental trials) created the brand and began to market it locally and eventually to areas outside of Kentucky. As misfortune would have it, Augutus Bulleit disappeared while transporting some barrels of his bourbon to New Orleans, and the brand disappeared for over 100 years. In 1987, Tom Bulleit revived the brand which bears his great grandfather’s name. Today the brand is owned by the Diageo Conglomerate who market the product throughout North America and into Europe.

The sample bottle of Bulleit Bourbon which I received was bottled at 45% alcohol by volume and is the standard bottle sold in North America. Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… There is a bit of a spicy swat that tickles the tonsils, but there is also a nice maple and caramel sweetness which accompanies that spicy swat and makes you want to take another sip. I can taste oak planks which are seeping just a little fresh sap from the wood pores, some delightful rye spices, and of course that rather sweet impression of maple and caramel …
