Christmas Cocktail Bazaar: Holiday Bliss

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 12, 2018

I am nearing the end of my Cocktail Bazaar which was inspired by Smirnoff Vodka as their US media team was kind enough to send me a plethora of recipes and samples to taste and experiment with. From those samples and recipes, I chose those which suited my skills as a home bartender to share with you, and I created a few of my own as well. My hope is that the recipes I have shared can be duplicated not only by professional bartenders, but also by my readers at home.

The holiday recipe I am sharing today features Smirnoff Peppermint Twist which was described to me as a deliciously cool flavoured vodka which features the taste of sweet candied peppermint. Peppermint Twist can apparently be served as a chilled shot or mixed into holiday-themed cocktails. I was sent quite a few recipes for Peppermint Twist and one of those which caught my eye was an indulgence called Holiday Bliss.

What I like about this serving is that it is not only relatively easy to create with the simple ingredients I have at home, it also features Don Julio Anejo Tequila as a complimentary ingredient. I have come to really enjoy tequila, and finding a new recipe to enjoy with the agave spirit was a delight.

Here is the recipe sent to me by the cocktail gurus at Smirnoff. It’s meant to be a holiday cocktail, but you can be forgiven if you want to indulge year round!

Holiday Bliss

1 oz. Smirnoff Peppermint Twist
1/2 oz. Don Julio Añejo Tequila
3 oz.  Chocolate Milk
Ice
Grated Cinnamon and Nutmeg

Add the first three ingredients into a Metal Shaker with Ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Strain into a rocks glass and top with grated nutmeg cinnamon

Enjoy Responsibly!

Don Julio is a 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila made from agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco. The company was established by Don Julio González, who apparently began to examine the prospect of making his own Tequila in 1942. Don Julio Añejo is produced in small batches, aged in American white-oak barrels for eighteen months.

Here is a link to my previous review:

Review: Don Julio Anejo Tequila

“… The agave flavour is mellow accented by mild touches of white pepper, and the sweetness of a light caramel. I taste a very mild oak presence and an underlying honey-like sweetness which is very appealing …”

Smirnoff Peppermint Twist is a limited seasonal offering from Smirnoff Co. bottled at 30% alcohol by volume. It features a ‘scratch and sniff’ bottle allowing you to enjoy the seasonal scent of peppermint and candy cane before you even open the bottle. You may read my full review of this flavoured vodka here:

Review: Smirnoff Peppermint Twist

” … The peppermint flavoured vodka is perhaps a touch on the sweet side, then again it is the flavours of peppermint and candy cane which are featured and the spirit would not be a true holiday spirit if it did not accurately reflect this sweetness …”

I hope you enjoy the review, Chimo!

Review: El Jimador Reposada Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 14, 2018

El Jimador Tequila is owned by Brown-Froman. The Brand is produced thirty miles from Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, in the town of Amatitan, at Brown – Forman Tequila Distillery Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V. which is also referred to as Hacienda Herradura. The Hacienda also produces the more premium Herradura brand as well as Suave 35 and Antiguo. The Jimador tequila is named to pay homage to the jimadors who harvest agave. After it is harvested, the agave is cooked in clay ovens. The juice is extracted after cooking using steel bladed shredders after which it is distilled on old copper pot stills.

Because Hacienda Herradura is located in the Central Lowlands of Jalisco rather than in the Highlands we can expect a more earthy style of tequila than which would be produced in the Highlands where the agave tends to produce a spirit with higher citrus notes and a sharper squeal of peppery spice.

El Jimador Reposado is barrel rested for two months before being bottled between 35 % and 40 % alcohol by volume depending upon the market the spirit is intended for. My sample bottle produced for the Canadian Market (and the USA Market) was bottled at 40 % abv..

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: El Jimador Reposado Tequila

“… I gave the glass a little time to breathe and the punky fruity agave gained a little strength overtaking the dusty oak spice. An earthy quality is present as are indications of light baking spices. The overall impact of the nose has me stealing a sip just a little quicker than I had anticipated …”

Please enjoy the review which concludes with a few of my recommended servings, Chimo!

Review: 1800 Reserva Reposado Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 23, 2018

1800 ReposadoThe 1800 Tequila brand is owned by the Beckmann Family, who also own the Jose Cuervo brand. And indeed, according to the nom identifier upon the bottle (Nom 1122 CRT) the brand is produced at the same facility, the Casa Cuervo, S.A. de C.V. which is located in the central lowland tequila region of Jalisco Mexico. The 1800 Reserva Reposado is produced using piñas from 100 % Weber Blue Agave (8-12 year old) and is aged in a combination of American and French Oak barrels at least six months.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: 1800 Reserva Reposado Tequila

“… When I nose the glass it yields mild butterscotch aromas, and behind them are soft punky vegetal smells of lowland agave. The earthy aroma is reminiscent of baked squash and grilled pineapple. There are also unusual hints of cooked celery within the vegetal nature of the agave aroma (maybe a bit of water cress too). As I gave the glass time to breathe some peppery notes began to break free from the fruity agave as well as hints of vanilla and cinnamon, and perhaps a dusting of milk chocolate …”

Please enjoy my review which features a cocktail I have not shared previously, the Juan Collins.

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Reposado Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 9, 2018

Leyenda del Milagro Reposado Tequila is produced from estate-grown 100% Blue Weber Agave harvested from the highlands of Jalisco. As a highland tequila,we can expect the Milagro Tequila to exhibit strong fruity citrus notes and to have a little hot pepper in the delivery and in the finish. (This is as opposed to lowland tequila which has stronger earthier flavours of agave and less hot pepper.)

The spirit is produced at Tequilera Milagro, S.A. de C.V. (Nom 1559) where the agave is roasted in brick ovens made from the same volcanic-rich soil where the highland agave flourishes in Jalisco. The roasted agave is shredded to extract the cooked juice which (unlike other tequila brands which are double distilled) is triple distilled in a Copper Pot Still. This makes Milagro Reposado Tequila a lighter spirit than we would typically expect.

Here is a link to my completed review:

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Reposado Tequila

“… I discovered a lightly sweet, mildly punky agave aroma lifting from the glass. There is a savory quality with fruity smells reminiscent of baked butternut squash. This is complemented by light caramel, hints of oak, some scattered black pepper and citrus zest. There is also a lovely earthy quality which brings me impressions of black licorice and angelica as well as oolong tea …”

I hope you enjoy my review which includes my new cocktail, the Metro Fancy.
