Christmas Cocktail Bazaar: Holiday Cosmo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 28, 2018

As I mentioned this past Sunday, Thanksgiving (both the Canadian and the American) Holiday is past, and I am now gearing up for the Christmas Season by sharing some yule tide cocktails. Today’s serving is a seasonal take on the classic Cosmopolitan Cocktail.  The twist is the use of Cranberry Pomegranate Juice and then the dressed up garnish which includes candy glitter.

Here is a hint for you, when you rime the glass, keep the glitter on the outside so as to not sweeten the serving unnecessarily. As well, (although it is not shown on the picture below) leave about a third of the rim without candy garnish so you can sip without getting a mouthful of glitter. The serving will still look spectacular wowing all of your friends, and if someone has a sweeter tooth they can always turn the glass around when they sip.

Here is the Holiday Cosmo served with Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka.

Rim a martini glass with water and dip into Edible Candy Glitter
Add Smirnoff No. 21 VodkaTriple Sec and Cranberry Pomegranate Juice into a metal shaker with Ice
Shake until the outside of the metal shaker begins to frost
Strain into the Candy-rimmed Martini Glass
Garnish with a Cranberry Skewer and a Twist of Lemon

Enjoy Responsibly!

Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Cranberry Lime Mojito

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 21, 2018

For my American friends, and in honour of the American Thanksgiving which arrives tomorrow, I thought I would put an autumnal spin on the classic Mojito by introducing a dollop of Cranberry flavour via Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry and Lime.

Full disclosure here, the original recipe that was sent to me by the US Smirnoff Media Team for this remarkable indulgence suggests Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka as the alcohol base for the serving. However, I decided to stick closer to the heart of the true mojito and have recommended Captain Morgan’s White Rum in place of the suggested Vodka. The recipe works well either way; but I prefer the extra character and flavour that white rum brings to the cocktail.

Cranberry Lime Mojito

1 can (12 oz.)  Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry Lime
1 oz. Captain Morgan White Rum
0.5 oz. Simple Syrup
3 oz. Cranberry juice
Fresh Cranberries
Fresh Mint Leaves
Lime Wedges
Ice

Muddle Mint and a Lime Wedge into the bottom of a high ball glass
Add Simple Syrup followed by Ice
Pour in Cranberry Juice
Complete with Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry Lime
Garnish with fresh Lime Wedges, Cranberries and Mint Leaves

Enjoy Responsibly!

Note: Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Cranberry Lime is a premium malt beverage which is brewed and bottled at 4.5 % abv.  by Smirnoff Co.. The malt beverage contains zero sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and natural flavours.

CAPTAIN MORGAN White Rum is five times distilled and made from cane molasses. It is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume. If you are interested here is a link to my full review:

Review: Captain Morgan White Rum

“… The initial nose surprised me too as there was an ever so light mustiness rising the from the glass, as well as very apparent aromas of a mild caramel, green banana, peppery zest and light sandalwood spices. I was expecting the ‘5 times distilled’ white to have more of a ‘vodka-like’ nose, and am pleased to be completely wrong on that count …”

Please enjoy my latest rum review, which includes a new daiquiri-style serving, the 11 A.M. Daiquiri, Chimo!

Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Berry Lemonade Mule

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 7, 2018

Recently the folks at Smirnoff (well actually it was one of their media companies) reached out to me wondering if I was willing to feature some of their new flavoured products including the Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Malt Beverages on The Rum Howler Blog. I found the idea rather interesting. Although I am primarily a reviewer of spirits, I do share cocktail recipes from time to time as well. So I responded by saying that if they could send me product samples as well as recipe suggestions which I could make at home, then I would share the recipes which I liked in a sort of Cocktail Bazaar during the fall.

One of the first recipes they sent me was a Mule-style serving which mixes Smirnoff’s Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Lemonade with Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, Lemonade and Ginger Beer. It is certainly a recipe which is easy to prepare at home. So I mixed one up and decided that this delicious combination should be the first recipe for my Fall Cocktail Bazaar.

It’s a dandy recipe, I suggest you try one as well.

Berry Lemonade Mule

2 oz. Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade
1 oz. Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1 oz. Lemonade
1 oz. Ginger Beer
Ice
Raspberry and Lemon for Garnish

Add Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade, Smirnoff No. 21 vodka, and lemonade to a tall mixing glass
Add ice and stir until well chilled.
Pour over ice into a mule mug
Top with Ginger Beer
Garnish with a fresh raspberry and lemon

Enjoy Responsibly!

The Anvil

Posted by Arctic Wolf on August 13, 2018

While driving to work this morning I learned that Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart has passed away. The Anvil was one half of one the greatest Tag Teams in the history of Professional Wrestling, The Hart Foundation, which consisted of Jim ‘The Anvil” Neidhart who was the muscle and Brett “The Hitman” Hart, who provided the finesse.

Neidhart honed his talent while wrestling for the Stampede Wrestling Promotion based in Calgary Alberta Canada and has been followed by his daughter Natalya, who has become a World Champion in her own right currently performing for the Raw brand for World Wrestling Entertainment.

My thoughts and prayers are with all who have been saddened by this loss.

About a year ago I designed a cocktail inspired by Jim Neidhart, and I thought I would share it once again as my small tribute to the many hours of entertainment The Anvil provided for me as a wrestling fan.

The Anvil

2 1/2 oz Alberta Premium 100% Rye Whisky
1/2 tsp Raspberry-Beet(down) Jelly
2 dashes Fees Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters
Ice
Coil of (Lemon Peel)

Add the first three ingredients to a rocks glass over the ice cubes
Stir until the Raspberry-Beet Jelly is fully dissolved
Add Ice
Garnish with a Kiwi or Lemon Peel peel

Please Enjoy Responsibly!

Cocktail Hour: The Nottingham Walrus and Ungava Gin

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 30, 2018

North of the Ungava Peninsula (in Northern Quebec) within the body of water known as the Hudson Strait is an arctic island which was given the name, Nottingham Island, by English explorer Henry Hudson when he was exploring what was to become the Canadian North in the 1600s. The island was used for hunting and fishing by the surrounding Inuit communities, and it is known to harbour a large number of walrus during the summer months. The island and its summer inhabitants serve as the inspiration for the name of my cocktail which uses a Canadian Gin which was also inspired by the rugged Canadian North, Ungava Gin.

Nottingham Walrus.SAM_1086Nottingham Walrus

2 oz Ungava Canadian Premium Gin
1 oz Orange Juice
1/2 oz Lemon juice
3/8 oz sugar syrup
ice
Cucumber

Peel and Slice a 4 to 5 inch length of cucumber lengthwise
Add one length of cucumber and a few ice-cubes to a suitable rocks glass
Shake the gin, juice and the sugar syrup over ice in a metal shaker
Strain into the rocks glass over the ice and cucumber
Stir once or twice with the cucumber and serve

Please Indulge in my cocktail suggestions responsibly!

Note:

Here is a link to my recently revised review of Ungava Gin:

Review: Ungava Gin

“… The flavour of the Ungava Gin represents a nice melding of piny bitterness and herbaceous spiciness with lemon citrus. The floral elements within serve more as an accent than as a main attraction. I found myself drawn to the complex flavour profile which was moderately aggressive and perhaps more traditional than I expected …”

Please enjoy my review and cocktail.

Chimo!
