Rum Review: Juan Santos Antigua Reserva 21 Yr Old Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 10, 2010

This is the last review I am doing on a series of new Colombian rums that are entering the North American marketplace via my home province of Alberta.  Allow me to introduce Juan Santos Twenty One Year Old Rum.  I found this to be a tremendous rum with unmatched smoothness, and a wonderful soft clean finish.

Juan Santos rums  are a product of Casa Santana Liquors, the only privately held liquor company in Colombia which  is specializing in the production of premium aged rum.  Casa Santana was founded in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1995, by the Riascos family.  Their  rums have been developed by Cuban master blenders who began  their craft in Cuba before leaving the island in 1994, bringing with them their rum making craft.

Casa Santana has  two production plants which are located in Santa Marta, and in the Free Trade Zone of Barranquilla.  These  are located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia which provides access for shipping abroad.

Casa Santana claims their rum production is completely  free of additives and artificial essences.

Rum Review: Barcelo Imperial Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 5, 2010

The Barcelo Brand and Company was founded in 1929. The company survived the destruction of its first distillery by the San Zenon Hurricane in 1930, and has grown to be one of the Dominican Republic’s major rum producing enterprises.    Now Barcelo is an international brand which claims sales in over 20 countries on 3 continents.  The Ron Barcelo portfolio includes five basic brands which climb the ladder from the basic white rum “Ron Barcelo Blanco” to the premium rum “Ron Barcelo Imperial”.   Here is a link to the Ron  Barcelo  web page:  Ron Barcelo Web Page .

In preparing this review I went back to my good friend forrest, who is a cocktail maniac.  I wanted to make sure the cocktail I had created would ‘pass the mustard’ so to speak.  His answer to my cocktail was simple, “Make me one…better make that two!”

So complete with my “forrest approved” cocktail. Here is my review:

Rum Review: Havana Club Barrel Proof Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 13, 2009

This week’s Rum review is an authentic Cuban rum which, to be honest, blew me away by how good it is.  The Barrel Proof rum is a blend of select older rums which are refinished in young oak, and then bottled at 45 % alcohol content.    The finishing in the younger oak allows newer oak tannin to be introduced into the blend.  This is a tricky procedure but one which bears stunning results if done properly.

The Havana Club website expands on this process as if you wish you may give it a read with this link.

Or if you wish you can go straight to my review and read my thoughts on this stunning rum:

Rum Review: Pampero Seleccion 1938

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 27, 2009

The country of Venezuela produces some fantastic rum.  I have already reviewed the Santa Theresa 1796 from Venezuela, as well I have  featured the Venezuelan Diplomatico Rums in one of my first Howling Highlights. There is a third famous rum family from Venezuela, The Pampero Rum family.

A few weeks ago I gave you my first impressions of Pampero Seleccion 1938 when  I found what I believe was one of the last bottles for sale in Edmonton.  Now I cannot find the rum anywhere in the Province, and sadly it seems the entire family of Pampero rums will be absent from Alberta shelves this winter.

Fortunately for my readers I did find one bottle, and now I have completed five separate tasting for this rum and also experimented with a few cocktails.  You can read the results of this hard labour here:

Rum Review: Juan Santos Gran Reserva (12 Year)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 17, 2009

We have come to the fourth review on a series of new Colombian rums entering the Canadian marketplace. The Juan Santos 12 year old rum brings an increased level of smoothness and depth to the rum glass, and it was truly a pleasure to review the sample which was provided for me by the rum’s Canadian importer, The Liber group.

Please read the review here:

Review: Juan Santos Gran Reserva – 12 Year Old Rum

The review includes a new cocktail I designed specifically for this rum called THE JUAN SANTOS SLOE AND SOUR.   The cocktail has already received positive feedback on RUM CONNECTION where my Juan Santos Gran Reserva review was first published.
