Rum Review: Juan Santos 9 Yr Reserva Especial Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 2, 2009

I continue my journey through the range of the Juan Santos Rums from Colombia.  I am finding that as I move up the age ladder so to speak, I am encountering more smoothness, and depth of flavour.

Here is an excerpt from the review:

“….This rum feels more crisp than the previously reviewed 5-year-old rum. The rum flavours and spice I taste are indistinct, as if they are melting into the oak.  I taste soft notes of caramel, light touches of hotter cinnamon, and a faint hint of hazelnut and nutmeg….”

Rum Review: Juan Santos 5 Yr Old Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 26, 2009

The first salvo was launched several months ago when the Liber Group quietly placed Juan Santos Colombian Coffee Infused Rum on the store shelves in Alberta, Canada. Sample bottles for tasting were placed into liquor stores, and the bottles began to sell. This isn’t an ordinary flavoured rum, its core is a premium 7 yr Old Colombian Rum from Santana Liquor which I reviewed for Rum Connection on September 21, 2009.

The importer (and distributor) is a small Canadian company called The Liber Group. I met with their representative on Thursday September 16 to discuss the rum invasion, and to sample their product line:

In early November the push will begin to place four aged rums into the Alberta Marketplace. The Liber group plans to introduce a 5-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 12-year-old, and a premium 21-year-old rum into the marketplace coinciding with this Province’s Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festivals in Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. Plans are underway to grow the market through Western Canada this fall.

Here is an excerpt from my impressions of the Juan Santos Five Year Old Rum:

“…The rum has a nice soft texture and buttery feel in the mouth.  Flavours of creamy mild caramel seem to melt on the tongue with traces of nutmeg, and a hint of cinnamon.   Wrapped around this caramel/toffee like flavour is the unmistakable presence of a soft bourbon and a hot peppery rye….”

Howling Highlights – Renegade Rums

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 25, 2009

This week the spotlight is placed upon the Renegade Rum Company.   Renegade Rums are single vintage artisanal rums made from hand selected stocks of the finest distilleries in the Caribbean and the Americas.   Renegade will hand-pick the rum casks from the selected distilleries and ship the rums to Scotland to refinish or ‘Ace” them in hand selected finishing barrels at the Bruichladdich distillery.

Renegade Rums

What sets these rums apart from others is the barrels chosen for refinishing.  Not second run whiskey barrels from the United States, but instead more exotic wine barrels from selected wineries in Europe.  So we have a Port finished rums from Panama and Barbados,  or  Chateau Latour finished rums from Jamaica and Guyana.  Renegade experiments with Madeira finished Guyanan rum.  The list goes on.

These rums are unique and quite unlike anything produced anywhere else in the world.  They do not taste like traditional rums, rather they taste like new hybrid spirits with the influence from the finishing casks setting their imprint firmly into the rum.

For more information please visit the Renegade Rum Website.

Later this week I will be giving my first impressions of Renegade Rum Jamaica 2000 (Hamden).  An eight year old rum from the Jamaican Hamden distillery which has been finished in French Chateau Climens Casks.  Until then you can enjoy my reviews of Renegade Rum Panama (Don Jose) 1997  and Renegade Rum Guyana UITVLUGHT 1995.

Renegade Rum Panama (Don Jose) 1997

Awesome aroma with oriental spices, and brown sugar. A Mild fruity aroma like cherries sits at the very back of the nose……

Renegade Rum Guyana UITVLUGHT

I am glad I tasted this five times before I reviewed it as it gets better with each tasting. I will warn you that the flavour is unlike any rum I have tasted previously…….

Rum Review: Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 19, 2009

For the first review added (27 reviews in all now) since the site opened, I will take you vicariously to St. Croix, one of the US Virgin Islands.  Native inhabitants of St. Croix are called CruzianCruzan Estates and the rum company takes its Cruzan name from that.  The Single Barrel Estate Rum is considered the flagship brand of the company.

Here is an excerpt from the review:

“…Cruzan Single Barrel Rum is a blend of vintage rums which have been aged up to 12 years. Once blended the vintage rums are then refinished in a new oak barrel for about one year. Barrels are bottled individually with each bottle of rum coming from a single barrel…….”

Howling Highlights – Diplomatico Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 18, 2009

Every week I plan to do what I will call my Howling Highlights.   I will try to bring forward some explanation of certain rums or rum companies and relate the highlight to some reviews I have in my reviews section.

The first Highlight is on Diplomatico Rum.  I discovered Diplomatico just this past summer.  Their rums are full of flavour and spices with just enough sweetness to put them into the stratosphere.

Diplomatico rums are made in Venezuela by Distilerias Unidas, S.A.

I could give you some sort of history here but why not click the above link and do a little browsing of their website.  They can tell you their story better than I can.  If you are interested in my reviews of  Diplomatico Rums, Here they are:

Diplomatico Reserva Eclusiva (Rum Review)

Diplomatica Reserva Eclusiva

Stupendous bouquet. So rich and luxurious that I can hardly keep it from my mouth. Mostly caramel with nice hints of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and walnut…..

READ MORE HERE .

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Diplomatico Anejo (Rum Review)

Diplomatico Anejo 2

Nutty (hazelnut and walnut) aroma mixed with cinnamon and brown sugar. Darker in atmosphere  and more brooding aroma than the Exclusiva Reserva even though the spirit is lighter……
