Review: Langs Banana Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 26, 2023

Gavin & Alexander Lang were wine and spirit merchants based in Glasgow Scotland in the 1860’s. They originally produced Scotch whisky; however, they also began to experiment with rum producing recipes that expanded their portfolio after being influenced by the imported goods arriving at the Clydeside docks from the Caribbean.

Today, Langs Banana Rum is produced by Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd who are Registered In Scotland. This is a flavoured rum with a Jamaican base spirit produced from both unaged and aged molasses based, pot and column distilled rums. The portion that is aged was matured in ex-bourbon American white oak casks. The blended Jamaican spirit is infused with banana flavour when it arrives in Scotland.

Here is a link to my completed review:

Review: Langs Banana Rum

“… Obvious ripe banana (real banana!) aroma with building butterscotch/toffee and hints of baking spice (vanilla and cinnamon). Maybe a touch of orange peel and hints of pineapple …”

I hope you all enjoy this review, I have a few more rums in the queue so stay tuned through the summer.

Review: Captain Morgan Apple Smash (Flavoured Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 28, 2018

A few weeks ago I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Morgans Apple Smash. The product was described to me as a gluten-free flavoured rum which arrives in a nifty scratch and sniff (apparently apple scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released: Captain Morgan Loconut, and Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash Rums.

Apple Smash is bottled at 30 % alcohol by volume and was apparently is designed to be served as a chilled shot, mixed with cinnamon whiskey, or in a cocktail with ginger ale.

These new ‘shot style’ flavoured rums have been a bit of a hit or miss affair as far as my reviews have been concerned. I gave  Captain Morgan Loconut a big thumbs up with a score of 87/100; however Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash did not fare so well with a thumbs down score of 68.5/100. The only thing to do is to open my bottle, take a few sniffs and a few swallows, make a few cocktails, so I can report my feeling on the new Captain Morgan Apple Smash Rum.

Review: Captain Morgan Apple Smash (Flavoured Rum)

“… Whether the flavoured rum inside the bottle receives a thumbs up or a thumbs down (or something in between) the bottle itself receives a huge thumbs up. It  is designed to resemble a green apple and if you scratch the surface of the label, it even carries a realistic green apple scent …”

I hope you all enjoy the review, and the suggested servings which follow, Chimo!

Review: Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 18, 2018

This week I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Watermelon Smash. The product was described to me as a gluten-free flavoured rum which arrives in a nifty scratch and sniff coconut shaped (and apparently scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released: Captain Morgan LoconutCaptain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced and Captain Morgan Cannon Blast Rums.

According to the Captain Morgan Website:

The latest rum bottle from the Captain is bursting with juicy watermelon flavor. So flavorful, even our pack is scented! Simply enjoy as a chilled shot for instantly delicious fun or create a refreshing spritzer by mixing with club soda and a lemon garnish. Pick up some Watermelon Smash today to party like a Captain all summer long.

Watermelon Smash bottled at 25 % alcohol by volume and was apparently is designed primarily to be consumed as a shot; however, it is also can be mixed in fun cocktails such as the Watermelon Smash Spritz or the Watermelon Mojito (see recommended servings below).

Here is a link to my latest flavoured rum review:

Review: Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash

“… I decided to begin my examination by constructing some of the signature cocktails sent to me by the Captain Morgan team. I started with the Watermelon Smash Shot, and I served one to my friend who was sampling the spirit with me. His reaction was telling …”

Please enjoy my review of the newest Captain Morgan Flavour.

Review: Captain Morgan Loconut (Flavoured Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 30, 2017

Earlier this Spring I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Morgan Loconut. The product was described to me as a gluten-free blend of Caribbean Rum, Coconut Liqueur, Spice and Natural Flavours, and it arrived in a nifty scratch and sniff coconut shaped (and apparently scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced and Captain Morgan Cannon Blast  Rums.A

According to the Captain Morgan Press Release:

After blasting into the shots category with CAPTAIN MORGAN Cannon Blast, CAPTAIN MORGAN LocoNut is shaking things up with its new coconut-flavored shot which comes in a coconut-shaped bottle, smells like a coconut and yeah, you guessed it, tastes like a coconut. It’s the perfect shot to enjoy responsibly with friends, co-workers, bro-conuts, fun in-laws, very friendly strangers and of course, coconut lovers …

The spirit is bottled at 20 % alcohol by volume and I was told to serve the spirit chilled in the form of a ‘Coconut Shot’.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Captain Morgan Loconut

“… I found the breezes above the glass pleasant and inviting, firm on the coconut with a pleasant sweetness.  This sweetness does not seem intense or overbearing, instead it seems to compliment the firm sense of coconut. I spent some time inspecting the breezes to see if I could discern any hints of spice. I noticed very light hints of baking spice (vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg) … “

Please enjoy my review, and the suggested cocktail, the Chocolate Covered Banana.

Review: Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 24, 2016

Plantation Rums Stiggins' Fancy btl RVB BD

Yesterday I introduced a flavoured rum from Alexander Gabriel (President and Owner, of Cognac Ferrand), Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum.

Cognac Ferrand for those who do not know is a Cognac House in France which produces the Plantation Rum brand. Plantation Rums are produced and aged in various part of the Caribbean, after which they are sent to France to be aged for a further length of time in the cellars at Cognac Ferrand in used cognac barrels.

Alexander Gabriel in collaboration with Dave Wondrich (cocktail guru and author of Imbibe) researched the original recipes of Pineapple Rum (which was quite a popular delicacy in the 19th century) and then set about to re-create this lost libation.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum

” … The aroma from the glass is very inviting. Rum-like scents of butterscotch toffee, vanilla and baking spice (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves) lead out with both orange peel and yummy citrus pineapple scents riding along. There are light accents of almond and a mild sweep of tobacco which complete the nose …”

Please enjoy my review of this outstanding flavoured rum!
