Review: Cane Island Panama Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 5, 2023

Cane Island is a rum brand owned by Infinity Spirits, who appear to be based in Amsterdam. The Cane Island Brand showcases rums which are sourced from iconic Island rum nations in the Caribbean and elsewhere in the world. Each one of these countries has a long history of rum production with their own styles and traditions. The rum selections consist of Single Island Blends and Single Estate Rums. The Single Island Blends are blends of rum coming from different distilleries from one island, whereas the Single Estate Rums are sourced from one single distillery.

According to the company website, Cane Island Panama Rum was distilled at the Varela Rum Distillery in Panama. The spirit is column distilled from molasses and tropically matured in ex-bourbon casks for 3 to 8 years before being bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

Here is a link to my full review and tasting notes:

Review: Cane Island Panama Rum

“… Butterscotch, fine oak spice, almond and orange peel complimented by vanilla and light baking spices (ginger and cinnamon). Perhaps I also notice a mild impression of coconut although it seems to disappear as quickly as it appears. As the glass breathes, the butterscotch, almond and vanilla merge together giving me a sense of marzipan …”

I hope you enjoy this review which includes my serving suggestion, The Railcar.

Review: Berry’s Finest Panama Rum (Aged 11 Years)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 11, 2018

Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of London’s oldest Wine and Spirits Merchant with over 300 years of experience and tradition from which to draw upon. The company began its operation at 3 – St. James’s Street (in London, UK) in 1698, and still operates from that same location today. Although they are primarily merchants of wine, the company has a strong presence in the sale of distilled spirits as well. And in fact, this presence within the spirits industry had its beginnings approximately 100 years ago. (The Cutty Sark brand was developed by Berry Bros & Rudd in 1923.)

Today Berry Bros & Rudd acts as an independent bottler of Whisky, Cognac, Armagnac, and of course Rum. A few of their rum offerings are available in my locale, and I was able to obtain a sample of the 11 Year Old – Berrys’ Finest Panama Rum.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Berry’s Finest Panama Rum (Aged 11 Years)

“… The first sip brings rich flavours of vanilla and butterscotch forward which are accompanied by marzipan and fine wood spices. Ginger pops into the mind immediately as does cinnamon and orange peel. There is a light bitterness underneath which seems to be part of the light flavour of oak sap which runs through the rum. A distinct fruitiness is evident and my mind conjures up images of canned apricots and orange marmalade …”

Please enjoy my review which includes a nice recipe suggestion, the Aztec Rum Old Fashioned.

Rum Howler 2014 # 14 Rum – Rum Nation Panama (Aged 21 Years)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 11, 2014

rum_howler_badge-2014Rum Nation is an Italian company created by Fabio Rossi, who began his life in the spirits trade as a Oenologist (one who has studied wine-making). After his studies, Mr. Rossi left the wine business and started up a whisky company in Edinburgh (Wilson and Morgan) acting as an independent bottler of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. His interest turned to rum, and in 1999 Fabio Rossi founded Rum Nation. His company is headquartered in Italy; but Fabio purchases select rums from various distillers in the Caribbean and the Americas. As a result Rum Nation provides a rather unique assortment of limited edition bottlings.

One such bottling is Rum Nation Panama which (according to the information sent to my from Mr. Rossi) is made from sugar cane molasses, distilled in continuous column and aged in American oak barrels (Quercus alba) for 21 years in Panama. Fabio has a good nose for rum and his Rum Nation Panama 21 Year Old is the 14th best rum I tasted in 2014.

Here is a link to my original review:

# 14 Rum – Rum Nation Panama (Aged 21 Years)

“… Dry fruit in the form of raisins, dates, and prunes are rising which seems to hint at a sherry influence although I have learned that these sherry-like accent are very typical for Panamanian Rums. Dark caramel, baking spices, walnuts and rich oak notes all build up as the glass sits …”

Rum Nation Panama 21 Year Old has a complex flavour profile full of oak spice, tobacco, canned fruit and dry fruit. Everything works together seamlessly with no single element stealing the show. Fabio Rossi obviously takes great care in the selection of his rum. We can expect to see more of Rum Nation later in the countdown.
