Review: Atlantico Gran Reserva Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 12, 2023

When I first encountered Atlantico Rum, the brand had just launched, and I was fortunate enough to be treated to an information session hosted by Brandon Lieb, of the Atlantico Importing Company.  I was also treated to a tasting where I was able to try their only rum in production at that point, Atlantico Private Cask as well as two rums which were still in development at that time, a premium white rum and an anejo rum. Today line-up consists of 3 rums, the Altantico Platino, Altantico Reserva, and that previously mentioned Altantico Private Cask(I suspect the Reserva and the Platino respectively were early versions of those rums I tasted over a decade ago.)

It appears the brand ownership has changed  a little during the intervening years. Up until three years ago Atlantico was part of Ian Macleod Distillers‘ portfolio of spirits. It is unclear to me whether the brand has been acquired by another spirit’s company after Ian Macleod released its control; however the spirit is still sold at various internet retail sites and is often included in sample form in those Christmas Advent Calendars that are sold during the holiday season.

Here is a link to my full review and tasting notes for Atlantico Gran Reserva Rum:

Review: Atlantico Gran Reserva Rum

“… fine oak and somewhat grassy tobacco spice, some lovely marzipan and a touch of maple forming as well. The rum appears rich and somewhat sweet. This is a typical characteristic of solero style rums …”

Please enjoy the review, and stay tuned for my examination of the Atlantico Platino which will publish in a few short weeks.  Chimo!

Review: Atlantico Private Cask Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 9, 2013

Atlantico Private CaskThe Atlantico Private Cask Rum is a private label rum produced by Oliver and Oliver,  for Atlantico Rum. (If you have not heard of Oliver and Oliver, I should explain that they are an independent bottler of rum operating in the Dominican Republic. They buy barreled rum from major rum producers, and age it using a solera style aging system.) Oliver and Oliver were apparently given a specific flavour profile to blend towards, and then working in conjunction with the Atlantico team, the Private Cask Rum was developed through a series of blending and tasting exercises. The result is a rum constructed to be a smooth easy to sip rum which is hoped will appeal to a wide variety of palates.

About two years ago, I was lucky enough to be treated to an information session hosted by Brandon Lieb, of the Atlantico Importing Company. I was allowed to sample their present offering, Atlantico Private Cask Rum, as well as sample some products which were in development. As their guest, I was given a bottle of the Atlantico Private Cask Rum after the presentation, and I decided to review the rum here on my website.

Review: Atlantico Private Cask Rum

“… I remembered that the Atlantico representatives I met in Miami described the rum which they constructed as a product which they hoped would be very easy for the new rum drinker to enjoy, somewhat of a gateway sipping rum for the uninitiated. It is meant to be smooth and easy to sip with a flavour profile to suit a wide variety of palates. In this regard the rum succeeds wildly. It is very smooth in its initial delivery, and the sweet caramel and honey notes will certainly be appreciated by a wide variety of persons …”

Please enjoy my review and do try my suggested recipe, the Atlantico Mule, which is of course a variation of the popular, Spanish Mule.

Review: Atlantico Private Cask Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 8, 2011

At Rum Renaissance 2011, in Miami Florida I was lucky enough to be treated to an information session hosted by Brandon Lieb, of the Atlantico Importing Company. I was allowed to sample their present offering, Atlantico Private Cask Rum, as well as sample two new products which were in development. Atlantico Rum is planning to expand their range with a new white rum, and a new anejo rum to add to the success of their Private Cask Rum. As their guest, I was given a bottle of the Atlantico Private Cask Rum after the presentation and I have decided to review the rum here on my website.

The Atlantico Private Cask Rum is a private label rum produced by Oliver and Oliver,  for Atlantico Rum. (If you have not heard of Oliver and Oliver, I should explain that they are an independent bottler of rum operating in the Dominican Republic.  They buy barreled rum from major rum producers, and then age it using a solera aging system in the “Cuban” style.)  Oliver and Oliver was given a specific flavour profile to blend towards, and working in conjunction with the Atlantico team, the Private Cask Rum was developed through a series of blending and tasting exercises. The result is a rum constructed to be a smooth easy to sip rum which is hoped will appeal to a wide variety of palates.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…Taking a little time with my glass I began to notice some nice oak and baking spice entwined in the caramel and honey flavour. Vanilla is very obvious as is the maple I detected on the nose. Deeper down I taste faint echoes of tobacco….”
