#Top100Rums of 2017 – #82 Captain Morgan Loconut (Flavoured Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 1, 2017

Earlier this Spring I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Morgan Loconut. The product was described to me as a gluten-free blend of Caribbean Rum, Coconut Liqueur, Spice and Natural Flavours, and it arrived in a nifty scratch and sniff coconut shaped (and apparently scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced and Captain Morgan Cannon Blast  Rums.A

According to the Captain Morgan Press Release:

After blasting into the shots category with CAPTAIN MORGAN Cannon Blast, CAPTAIN MORGAN LocoNut is shaking things up with its new coconut-flavored shot which comes in a coconut-shaped bottle, smells like a coconut and yeah, you guessed it, tastes like a coconut. It’s the perfect shot to enjoy responsibly with friends, co-workers, bro-conuts, fun in-laws, very friendly strangers and of course, coconut lovers …

The spirit is bottled at 20 % alcohol by volume and I was told to serve the spirit chilled in the form of a ‘Coconut Shot’.

Here is a link to my full review of the #82 Rum of 2017:

Review: Captain Morgan Loconut

“… I found the breezes above the glass pleasant and inviting, firm on the coconut with a pleasant sweetness.  This sweetness does not seem intense or overbearing, instead it seems to compliment the firm sense of coconut. I spent some time inspecting the breezes to see if I could discern any hints of spice. I noticed very light hints of baking spice (vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg) … “

The Rum Howler 2016 Top 50 Mixing Rums Countdown (#45 – #41)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 23, 2016

2016rum_howler_badgeToday’s entries in my Rum Howler 2016 Top 50 Mixing Rums Countdown do well to represent the range of rum styles available to bartenders and mixologists. We have an overproof white rum from Jamaica, a dark rum from Newfoundland and Labrador, a three-year aged rum from Belize, a spiced rum from Guyana, and a flavoured rum from Kenny Chesney.

I had great fun throughout the year making & scoring my cocktails for each of these rums. Some of them, (like Old Sam) I hadn’t tasted for years. Others (like the Wray and Nephew Overproof White) I tasted for the first time.

Here are the next five Mixing Rums in my 2016 Countdown:

Wray And Nephew Overproof#45  Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum

” … Mojitos, Mai Tai and Tiki drinks, and Daiquiris all seem to plausible destinations for this intense, fruity, ester filled rum. In that vein of thought, I went in went in a very specific Tiki direction first and crafted a variation on the basic Zombie Cocktail. Then I crafted what I called a High Test Daiquiri. I loved both recipes, although I admit the High Test Daiquiri might be an acquired taste for some as the full throttle flavour of Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum pushes right through the lime …”

old-sam#44  Old Sam Demerara Rum

“… The molasses and caramel flavours release a few baking spices onto the palate and I detect a nice nutty element as well which reminds me of walnuts and Brazil nuts. Old Sam is an ‘old style’ rum blend which tastes of molasses and tobacco. It is perhaps a little rougher than I expected; but I found that when I mixed a little of this rum half and half with cola and added and ice-cube, I was very happy with the results …”

bluechair_coconut#43  Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum

“… I mixed a nice tall deck drink for myself mixing the coconut rum with a bit of lemon juice and some blue Curacao (see recipe below) and sat in the afternoon sun enjoying the mingling flavours of my cocktail. The Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum promises to be a nice addition to my growing staple of summertime mixing spirits …”

3 Barrel#42  Travellers (Parrot) 3 Barrel Aged Rum

“… The Travellers 3 Barrel Rum is what I would consider to be a nice introductory sipping rum which will suit a large variety of palates. It has a flavour profile that tends just a little to the sweet side of the flavour path, but this sweetness is tempered with just enough oak to make the rum delicious. The rum also mixes very well. I sampled some with cola and with ginger-ale to equal delight. I made some cocktails with fruit juice as well and everything always seemed to work out nicely …”

el-dorado-spiced#41  El Dorado Spiced

“… I poured a few friends a glass of the El Dorado Spiced, as part of my review process, and solicited their opinion as to how well it stacked up both neat and mixed with cola. The opinions expressed by my friends match my own as we all enjoyed our libations and thought the El Dorado Spiced and Cola tasted especially nice. The spicy thrust from the rum pushes through the cola without becoming cloying or overwhelming …”

Review: Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on April 23, 2015

bluechair_coconutFishbowl Spirits Llc. is a company wholly owned by Kenny Chesney, the well-known Country Music Singer from Knoxville, Tennessee. In May, 2013 Fishbowl Spirits launched Blue Chair Bay Rum, which features an assortment of rums which were apparently inspired by the relaxed island lifestyle of the country music star. The line-up includes an assortment of flavoured rums (a Coconut Rum, a Coconut Spiced Rum, a Banana Rum and a limited time only Coconut Spiced Rum Cream, as well as a standard White Rum. Although Blue Bay Chair Rum is based in Nashville, the assortment of rums they produce are distilled in Barbados and then bottled in Rochester NY by LiDestri Food & Beverage.

Three of these spirits, the Coconut and Coconut Spiced rums, as well as the White Rum have been brought into Alberta by Glazer’s Of Canada Llc, and they arranged for me to receive all three rums to review here on my website.

Review: Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum

“… The initial aroma is very nice with firm coconut scents mingling with cane and vanilla accents. I like that the aroma appears laid back, clean and natural. I served the rum to my Rum Chums a few weeks ago, and they all seemed to quite like the natural aroma and felt the spirit was a step up from other coconut flavoured rums they had tried in the past …”

Please enjoy my review which includes a nice summertime cocktail, the Nylon Pool.

Introducing Captain Morgan’s New Flavoured Rum Line-up

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 22, 2015

CapmorgflavOn February 11, 2015, Captain Morgan introduced three flavors to its fleet of rums, CAPTAIN MORGAN® Pineapple Rum, CAPTAIN MORGAN® Coconut Rum, and CAPTAIN MORGAN® Grapefruit RumThese new Caribbean flavors are each five times distilled and of course made from cane molasses. Each of the expression blends natural flavors with CAPTAIN MORGAN® White Rum, resulting in a spirit which can be enjoyed as a summer cocktail mixer.

According to my Dan Kleinman, Vice President of Marketing, Rums for Diageo North America:

“This summer, we’re looking for consumers to flip over their hammocks and have a little fun with their mojitos and daiquiris by enjoying our new pineapple, coconut and grapefruit extensions. After last year’s successful launch of CAPTAIN MORGAN® White Rum, we wanted to expand our offerings in the category. These flavors allow adult fans to diversify their cocktails, providing them with a taste of the Caribbean no matter where they may be responsibly enjoying our products.”

The marketing team for Diageo sent me samples of all three of the new flavoured rums for review on my website, and in the coming weeks I will be giving each new flavour a try, and I will publish the results of my investigations here on the website.

Until then I though you might like to try these new Captain Morgan recipes created by their cocktail gurus specifically for each rum (click on the links to view the recipes):

The Piña Thunder

As part of the marketing 2015 campaign, the Captain Morgan Rum Co. will be bringing these flavors to music festivals, pool parties and summertime spots across the country throughout the year 2015.  If you encounter these flavoured rums, please enjoy responsibly.

And of course please stay tuned for my upcoming reviews!
