Review: Old Port Deluxe Rum (2011)

The Amrut Distillery is situated in Bangalore, ‘the garden city’ of India. The distillery sits in a tropical locale 3000 ft above sea level with its water source being the Himalayan Mountains. According to Indian Mythology, when the Gods and the Demons churned the oceans, they used the mountain, Meru, as the churner. As the Ocean was churned, a golden pot sprang up containing the Elixir of Life which was called the “Amrut”. This legend of course serves as the inspiration for the naming of the Amrut Distillery.

Amrut Old Port Deluxe Rum is the subject of this review, and it has undergone some changes since I last reviewed it 2 years ago. For Starters, the new bottle is slightly larger and contains slightly more (50 ml) rum. And, according to the importers of this spirit, Purple Valley Imports, the blend has changed to. The rum is continues to be distilled, aged,  and bottled at Amrut’s facility in Bangalore India using 100% Indian Cane. But the new style is apparently more whisky-like in body and delivery. I am hoping that the new blend still captures that wonderful exotic flavour of Indian Cane which I noted in my first review.

Here is an excerpt from the new review:

“… The aroma from the glass is filled with butterscotch candy. Light impressions of orange peel are present with vanilla and light oak spices. As I let the glass breathe, the aroma of sweet butterscotch-toffee deepens and a very light tobacco scent is apparent as well as some building baking spices. This is indeed much different than the older blend which contained much more heavy molasses in the aroma…”

Review: Legendario Ron Anejo

Jesus Lester Pomo (a Cuban National living in Spain) is the Export Manager for Legendario Rums (headquarters in Spain) responsible for the world-wide export of the Legendario line-up. Although the company is headquartered in Spain, the rum itself apparently hails from Cuba. The Legendario Rum arrives from Cuba to Europe via the  Sl Valencia Company. The brand, founded in the city of Havana since 1946, is marketed in the domestic market by the company Cuban Beverages.

The subject of my review, the Legendario Ron Anejo, is produced from a blend of 1, 4, and 6 year-old Cuban Rums which, after blending, are mixed with a small amount of muscatel wine. The blended product is then rested (or married) in American oak barrels for 15 days. The final rum is filtered through a traditional system of activated carbon filters and silica sand before bottling.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…When I bring the glass to my nose, I sense a combination of sweet caramel and dark field berries. There are also rich smells of vanilla and baking spices. As I let the glass decant, a honeyed molasses evolves;  I also begin to sense which seems to be some wisps of dark tobacco and raisins in the aroma…”

Review: Plantation Panama 2000 (Old Reserve) Rum

Cognac Ferrand has long had a special relationship with a variety of Caribbean rum producers. This relationship is based upon the rum producer’s need for quality oak casks to age their rum. Cognac casks, in particular, are highly sought after as ideal oak vessels for maturing quality rums. Based upon this relationship, they began to acquire certain old and unique batches of rum from various Caribbean sources, which were brought back to France to be finished in their own Cognac Casks. These rums have been bottled in a series of special Vintages under the umbrella of Cognac Ferrand’s own label, Plantation Rum.

The Plantation Panama 2000 (Old Reserve) Rum is column distilled rum which has been aged for nine years in selected bourbon casks. The aged rum was transported from Nicaragua to France, and then it was additionally aged for a short time in used Cognac casks to enhance or ‘finish’ the rum before it was bottled. I was given eight sample bottles, each 200 ml in size, which represent a good portion of the Plantation Rum line-up. The Plantation Panama is the fifth of these sample bottles which I have chosen to review here on my blog.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…The aroma from the glass immediately reminds me of butterscotch candy (actually Rum & Butter Lifesavers). An undercurrent of tobacco is also apparent as are light oak spices and vanilla. As I let the glass breathe, the aroma evolves into a sweet butterscotch-toffee which has a light herbal quality of sweet-grass and pungent spice…”

Review: Mount Gay Eclipse Black

Mount Gay Rum has added another member to their family of Rums, Mount Gay Eclipse Black. Like the other rums of Mount Gay, The Black Eclipse is produced from two types of stills, the traditional pot still and the column still. According to the information provided to me, the Mount Gay Eclipse Black features a higher percentage of rum from the pot still than the other Eclipse Rums. As well, the rum is blended from well aged stocks of several different barrel types. The combination of these two factors is said yield a bolder, richer, more robust and flavorful rum. Finally, it has also been bottled at 50 % alcohol by volume, higher than the Eclipse Gold or Mount Gay XO,  which helps to bring this robust flavour forward even more.

Recently the distributor for Mount Gay Rum (Select Wines), arranged for me to receive a sample of the Mount Gay Eclipse Black Rum for the purpose of reviewing their new rum here on my website.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… What settles into those breezes is rich aromas of molasses, leather and tobacco, smoky dry fruit, ripe banana, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper corns. The rum has a rich bronze colour, and when I give my glass a gentle tilt, and swirl the liquid slowly to cover the sides I am greeted with a thick oily sheen which imparts thick legs on the side of the glass…”

Review: Captain Morgan Deluxe Dark Rum

The Captain Morgan Rum Company can trace its history back to 1945 when Seagram’s CEO, Samuel Bronfman, negotiated the purchase of the Long Pond Distillery from the Jamaican Government and formed the Captain Morgan Rum Company. The company’s iconic brand,  Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum was based upon a recipe purchased from two local Jamaican pharmacists, the Levy Brothers who had developed the recipe using rum from the Long Pond Distillery. The Rum Company moved its production from Jamaica to Puerto Rico in the 1950s, and in 2001 Seagram’s sold the rum brand to the spirits giant, Diageo.

The subject of this review, Captain Morgan Deluxe Dark Rum is a blend of Caribbean rums which have been aged in white oak barrels for at least two years.  (Note: The Diageo marketing team here in Alberta provided me a sample bottle of this rum for my review.)

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…This rum seems to have a little spicy thrust in its delivery. It heats up the palate with some peppery spice, and then lays down a layer of molasses and dark caramel across the palate. I can taste some dry fruit, (prunes, raisins, and dates) and a little leathery tobacco deeper down. I also taste a wide swath of vanilla, and some odd spices which seem to hint at ginger and nutmeg…”
