Review: Leyenda del Milagro Anejo Mezcal

I hosted a tequila tasting for several of my friends in my tasting group and as part of the event, everyone was encouraged to bring along a new agave spirit that the group had never tasted before. One of my friends brought two bottles from Leyenda de Milagro, the first a Silver 100 % Agave Tequila, and the other, an Anejo 100% agave Mezcal. I reviewed the Silver Tequila last week (see here) and this is the review for the Anejo Mescal.

Researching the mescal proved quite difficult, as at first I could find no evidence that the product even existed. The spirit was not listed anywhere, nor was it shown on Leyenda del Milagro’s website.

“… The aroma from the glass is very interesting. If I placed the spirit in a line-up with several Bowmore Whiskies, it would take a few moments before anyone would notice that it was out-of-place. That is because the Mezcal brings a similar assortment of herbal phenols to the breezes and in fact these phenols bear a striking resemblance to the oily peat that is characteristic of Bowmore whisky …”

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver

According to the Jose Cuervo website, it all began in 1795 when Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo began to commercially produce his Mexcal wine spirit based upon an official permit from the King of Spain. By 1812, he had established La Rojena, the distillery which to this day still produces Jose Cuervo Tequila. By 1844, Jose Cuervo Tequila was being distributed within Mexico, and in 1873 the earliest known documented export of the Tequila outside of Mexico occurred when 3 bottles of Jose Cuervo were transported across the United States border by donkey. Those exports have continued (although no longer by donkey), and now the Jose Cuervo brand is the best-selling tequila brand in the entire world.

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver was released in 2011. It is a true 100% blue agave tequila. It is produced at the Casa Cuervo, S.A. de C.V. which is located in the central lowland tequila region of Jalisco Mexico. (the same distillery which produces all of the Jose Cuervo brands as well as the 1800 Tequila Brand).

“… When I nose the glass the scents and smells in the breezes seem somewhat muted consistent with lowland agave which tends to be more earthy and vegetal than Highland tequila. I note soft punky aroma of baked squash and grilled pineapple. There are also light indications of a vague cane-like sweetness, hints of vanilla, and wisps of lemon zest …”

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Silver Tequila

Leyenda del Milagro Silver Tequila is produced from estate-grown 100% Blue Weber Agave harvested from the highlands of Jalisco. As a highland tequila,we can expect the Milagro Tequila to exhibit strong fruity citrus notes and to have a little hot pepper in the delivery and in the finish. (This is as opposed to lowland tequila which has stronger earthier flavours of agave and less hot pepper.)

The spirit is produced at Tequilera Milagro, S.A. de C.V. (Nom 1559) where the agave is roasted in brick ovens made from the same volcanic-rich soil where the highland agave fourishes in Jalisco. The roasted agave is shredded to extract the cooked juice which (unlike other tequila brands which are double distilled) is triple distilled in a Copper Pot Still. This makes Milagro a lighter spirit than we would typically expect a silver agave spirit to be.

“… The initial aroma is full of rich earthy agave which brings impressions of baked zucchini and boiled celery into focus. There are also hints of damp punky balsam wood. The typical notes of spicy black pepper and fruity citrus zest are muted somewhat which gives the agave more expression than I typically notice in highland tequila …”

Review: Mezcal Jaral de Berrio Review:

Mezcal Jaral de Berrio is produced at the Hacienda del Jaral de Berrio. The Hacienda is located in the historic borough of San Felipe Torres Mochas, Guanajuato with origins that date back to the late 16th century. According to bibliographic data and historical stock inventories, production of mezcal at the site can be dated to 1764 when it was then known as aguardiente criollo del Jaral.

According to the Jaral de Berrio website:

The family of Mezcales de la Hacienda de Jaral de Berrio is one of the most emblematic among the Mezcal world due to its historical background.

Mezcal Jaral de Berrio is bottled with no aging and is classified (according to the company website) as a Joven spirit (see here for information about Mescal Categories and Classifications).

“… When the glass is given some time to breathe, the lightly vegetal agave notes become more distinctive. The breezes bring me impressions of mushy banana, grilled pineapple and a growing impression of white pepper and cilantro. Although I said the impressions were more distinctive, it would be true to say that the overall effect is mild …”

Review: Herencia de Plata (Reposado)

Herencia Tequila is a 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila produced by TEQUILAS DEL SEÑOR, S. A. DE C. V.,  a mid-sized, fourth generation family company located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The company was founded in 1943 and currently produces a number of tequila brands which include, Reserva del Señor, Sombrero, Tekali, Herencia Histórico, and of course Herencia de Plata.

The word ‘Herencia’ is apparently related to the english word ‘heritage’, and indeed, the Herencia de Plata has an impressive heritage. The tequila has been served by Mexican President, Vicente Fox to Queen Elizabeth II; it has won awards internationally, and it was originally produced to commemorate wedding of Juan Garcia, the son of the of the company founder, Manuel Garcia.

“… The agave spirit is rather clean and crisp. The typical flavours one expects in tequila, a somewhat earthy herbaceous agave, orange zest and lime citrus, and a squeal of white pepper are all combined in a crisp, sharp, but pleasing combination. There are hints of almond and perhaps a touch of marzipan lying under the spicier pepper and citrus. My imagination may be playing tricks on me, but I believe I also taste ripples of pineapple and spearmint playfully hiding in the back of the palate as well …”
