Tasting Rum From Around the World with The Rum Howler

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 17, 2013

I have been invited by the great guys (and gals) at UNWINED (Fine Wine, Spirits and Ales) in St. Albert to be the guest host for a Rum Event on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 appropriately named:

Tasting Rum Around the World with The Rum Howler

Presented By Chip Dykstra of The Rum Howler Blog

I think (although I admit I am biased because I selected the rums) that the line-up we will be tasting is solid as it represents a good cross-section of geographical styles of rum production. You can experience the wonderful flavour and diversity of rums from Central and South America, the Caribbean Islands, and as an added bonus a very unique rum from the Sub Continent of India. Capping the evening off will be the presentation and tasting of a very special rum 25-year-old spirit from Panama, the Panamonte Reserva XXV.

Here is the list of Rums I will be presenting:

Flor de Caña Centenario 12 Year Old  (Nicaragua)
Appleton Estate Extra Old 12 Year Old  (Jamaica)
Ron Millonario Solera 15 Reserva Especial  (Peru)
Old Monk Very Old Vatted XXX 7 Year Old   (India)
Panamonte Reserva XXV – 25 Year Old Rum  (From Panama)

The line-up includes some of my favourites! Please contact UNWINED for tickets which will be on sale soon for the low price of $25.00 each! (Wednesday, November 27 at 7:30 PM)

Top 10 White Rums Countdown # 4 – Flor de Caña Extra Dry 4 Year Old Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 2, 2013

op10RUM 550Flor de Caña has a history of rum production which is dated to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The company was founded by Francisco Alfredo Pellas and today, over 120 years later, the company is led headed by the fifth generation of the Pellas family. It has grown to be not only one of Central America’s leading brands of rum, it is also one of the most recognized rum brands in the world.

FDC Extra DryIf you check the Flor de Caña website, they make it clear that the FDC Extra Dry 4 Year Old Rum is not meant for sipping. It is a mixing rum meant for premium cocktails and bar drinks. My judging panel agrees, and the tastiness of those cocktails and bar drinks has resulted in the white rum being named the fourth best in my 2013 White Rum countdown!

You many read a full review here:

#4 White Rum – Flor de Caña Extra Dry 4 Year Old Rum

“… There is a lot of character in that initial first taste, but silky smooth, and suave are not descriptors I would use to describe the rum. Instead I would call the rum organic, and slightly pungent. It carries a lightly harsh sting or spiciness which swats at the palate. Notice though, that the first term I used to describe the rum was character. In fact my first sip of the rum reveals far more character than I usually find in white rum …”

The character I perceive within the FDC Extra Dry is I believe, what makes this rum such a great cocktail rum. It makes an outstanding Daiquiri, and a fantastic Cuba Libre‘. As well, the standard Mojito made with FDC Extra Dry is a treat to sip on even during my Canadian winter!

Review: Flor De Cana Centenario 21

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 15, 2013

SAM_0959 fdc 21The Flor De Cana Centenario 21 Commemorative Edition was produced as a special edition bottling near the turn of the century. The number 21 refers not to the age of the blend (which is 15 years), rather it is a nod to the 21st Century and the prestige which the Flor de Cana Rum Company had began to earn as a world-class producer of rum. When the rum was introduced at the turn of the century it created quite a splash winning accolades not only for the rum inside the bottle, but also for the stunning porcelain decanter which it was sold in. The rum is no longer widely available, and full sealed bottles have become collectors items in the rum world with pricing that ranges from $90.00 to $150.00 per bottle depending upon your locale. (My bottles cost $72.00 each when I purchased them in 2009.)

I recently decided it was time to open one of my bottles to see how a rum that knocked everyone’s socks off ten years ago rated today in the midst of the current explosion of premium rum brands.

You may click on the following excerpt to read the full review:

Review: Flor De Cana Centenario 21

“… The initial nose brings forward a dominant triumvirate of oak sap, semisweet butterscotch, and spicy tobacco aromas. It is really quite nice especially how neither the sweetness of the butterscotch, nor the sharpness of the oak sap, nor the spiciness of the tobacco takes control of the breezes above the glass …”

Please enjoy my review of this spectacular rum!

Top 30 Rums Countdown # 23 – Flor de Caña Centenario 12 Year Old

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 1, 2012

Top 30Flor de Caña has a history of rum production which is dated to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The company was founded by Francisco Alfredo Pellas and today, over 120 years later, the company is still headed by the fifth generation of the Pellas family. It has grown to be not only one of Central America’s leading brands of rum, it is also one of the most recognized rum brands in the world.

# 23 – Flor de Caña Centenario 12 Year Old

“… In those breezes are lovely scents of walnut shells and pecans, sticky sweet caramel and honey, rich baking spices (especially cinnamon, cloves, allspice and vanilla), and a nice firm but mellow oakiness which is quite lovely. I receive a distinct impression of richness with nice accents of chocolate caramel, light dabs of cola and a moderately spicy tobacco which drifts upwards to add character to the overall aroma…”

I love this rum, and when my friends and I were doing are tasting sessions, I was quite happy to learn that the loved it too. Our affection translated to position number 23 on my Best Rums of the World Countdown!

Revisiting Flor de Caña Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 6, 2012

When I opened my website, my absolute favourite rums were the 7 and 12-year-old rums of Flor de Caña. And my initial scores for these two rums reflected that love affair. When I want to kick back and enjoy a nice drink, either one fits the bill nicely. However; I have noticed that my yearning for each of these rums has dimmed lately. Other sexy new rums have come across my palate, and I reach for the Flor de Caña less and less.

This Autumn, (as a treat for the Canadian Thanksgiving) my wonderful wife picked me up a new bottle of each knowing how I had raved about each of them in the past, and that night I opened the Seven Year Old and had a nice drink over ice. I noticed then (but I did not mention it to my wife) that the flavour wasn’t quite as I remembered it. I do not know if the rum has changed, or if after three years of reviewing rum, my perceptions and standards had changed. There was only (in my mind) one thing to do. I revisited each rum in my private tasting room (and with my friends on another day), and I rewrote my tasting notes and scores. From these I cobbled together two new reviews for my website.

I should point out before anyone gets concerned, that despite the changes I found, each rum still pleases me immensely. The Rums of Flor de Caña are still amongst my favourites. Here are the links to each of the new reviews:
