Review: Barceló Añejo Rum

Ron Barceló was founded in 1930 under the name Barceló & Co in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The rum brand quickly grew in popularity growing into one of the largest in the Dominican, and the brand is now exported world-wide to over 20 countries.

According to the USA Ron Barcelo website the anejo rum is:

A refined blend of superior rums patiently aged in oak barrels. A refined blend of superior rums patiently aged in oak barrels. Supreme quality worthy of the noblest Dominican tradition.

Ron Barceló rum is distilled from fermented molasses, and bottled at 37.5 % alcohol by volume.

“… The rum is light bodied and lightly complex. A light butterscotch sweetness is wrapped in almond and vanilla with banana and orange peel and hints of treacle. There is also an overt grassy quality with hints of tobacco and menthol. There is a light bitterness running through the rum, which is offset by the light sweetness of butterscotch …”

Ron Barceló was founded in 1930 under the name Barceló & Co in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The rum brand quickly grew in popularity growing into one of the largest in the Dominican, and the brand is now exported world-wide to over 20 countries.

The Company advertises five indicators of quality which govern their production:

  • Only the finest sugar cane produced in the Dominican Republic is used.
  • All of our rums age in oak barrels from Kentucky that have been used to age Bourbon Whisky.
  • Constant research efforts by our Master Blenders lead us to the best possible blends.
  • Achieving a perfect combination of body character, great performance and exquisite bouquet.
  • Using the industry’s leading distilling technology with the age-old artisan knowledge of our local experts, heirs to a long tradition of excellence in rum production.

I reviewed this rum almost three years ago, and recently acquired a new bottle. I decided to go back and see if the rum, or my perception of it had improved after three years.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… When I allow the glass to breathe some of that initial harshness evaporates into the breezes, and I detect some notes of caramel, banana peel, and tobacco. However, the burnt brown sugar notes still tend to dominate the rum… “

Rum Review: Barcelo Imperial Rum

The Barcelo Brand and Company was founded in 1929. The company survived the destruction of its first distillery by the San Zenon Hurricane in 1930, and has grown to be one of the Dominican Republic’s major rum producing enterprises.    Now Barcelo is an international brand which claims sales in over 20 countries on 3 continents.  The Ron Barcelo portfolio includes five basic brands which climb the ladder from the basic white rum “Ron Barcelo Blanco” to the premium rum “Ron Barcelo Imperial”.   Here is a link to the Ron  Barcelo  web page:  Ron Barcelo Web Page .

In preparing this review I went back to my good friend forrest, who is a cocktail maniac.  I wanted to make sure the cocktail I had created would ‘pass the mustard’ so to speak.  His answer to my cocktail was simple, “Make me one…better make that two!”
