Captain’s Spiced Hurricane & a Review of the Captain’s 100 Proof

Posted by Arctic Wolf on April 14, 2016

The Hurricane is a tiki-style cocktail popularized in the 1940s by New Orleans tavern owner Pat O’Brien. Apparently O’Brien had an overabundance of rum which local alcohol distributors had foisted upon him, and he needed to find a way to sell more of it to make room for other spirits including a few cases of higher priced Scotch and Whiskey. The libation he came up with mixed different styles of rum with passionfruit and citrus juice, and over time it became a local sensation. The drink is still popular in New Orleans where it is served in a Hurricane-style glass which is apparently how the cocktail got its name.

HurricaneRecently, Captain Morgan has been expanding their rum line-up beyond the spiced category, and into the flavoured and white rum categories. To promote the new spirits they send bloggers like me recipes and samples. I decided it was a good time to review more of the Captain’s line-up, and when they sent me their take on the Hurricane, I thought the recipe was interesting and worth sharing too.

Here is Captain Morgan’s take on the classic Hurricane.

Captain’s Spiced Hurricane

3/4 oz. Captain Morgan 100 Proof Spiced Rum
3/4 oz. Captain Morgan White Rum
2 oz. Passion Fruit Juice
1 oz. Orange Juice
1 oz Lime Juice
1/4 oz Sugar Syrup
1/4 oz Grenadine
Ice
Orange slice and cherry for garnish

Add the ingredients into a metal shaker with ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Pour into a crushed ice-filled hurricane glass
Garnish with orange and cherry.

Enjoy Responsibly!

And for those interested, my original review (published in 2011) for Captain Morgan’s 100 Proof Spiced Rum can be found here:

Captain Morgan 100 Proof Spiced Rum

” … This rum is smoother than its lower proof sibling even though it carries more of an alcoholic punch. The flavours which I associate with good rum like oak spices which meld into a nice rummy caramel are more apparent in the stronger version of the rum …”

Note: My review for the new Captain Morgan’s White Rum will publish tomorrow.

Super Bowl Recipe #2: BUCKING BBQ BITES

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 5, 2016

Yesterday, I published a recipe for a platter of delicious of chicken wings (Dab On ‘Em Wings). This recipe was probably one which appealed more to Panther fans than Bronco fans so today I thought I would bring forward a chicken platter for those who would cheer for the boys from the Mile High Stadium, the Bucking BBQ Bites. This is not my recipe, it was created by George Johnson from The Comfort of Cooking.

George’s Recipe combines chicken and bacon with a spicy sweet BBQ Sauce. The sauce is quite easy to make, just make sure you have some Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum on hand as it plays a starring role. Here is how to make these delicious tidbits:
Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum

Spicy Sweet BBQ Sauce

1 1/2 cups Brown Sugar
1/2 cup Chile Sauce
1/2 cup Captain Morgan® Original Spiced Rum
1/4 cup Low-sodium Soy Sauce
1/4 cup Ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
2 garlic cloves (crushed)
1 teaspoon Ground Dry Mustard
Ground black pepper, to taste

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over low heat
Bring to a boil
Reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes
Stir occasionally
Use immediately, or store in refrigerator until ready to use.

I recommend that you may the sauce the day before the game and refrigerate it. If you don’t use it all up, don’t worry. The sauce tastes great with any recipe which calls for a tangy BBQ sauce.

Now that we have the sauce made. it is time to get on to those delectable chicken and bacon bites. (And there is no reason not to enjoy a Captain & Cola while everything is cooking.)

Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil
Spray lightly with cooking spray
Wrap each chicken piece with a small strip of bacon

Review: Captain Morgan Silver Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 26, 2015

Spiced Darwin

Spiced Darwin

Captain Morgan Rum traces its history back to 1945 when Seagram’s CEO, Samuel Bronfman, negotiated the purchase of the Long Pond Distillery from the Jamaican Government and formed the Captain Morgan Rum Company. The company’s iconic rum brand, Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum was based upon a recipe purchased from two local Jamaican pharmacists, the Levy Brothers, who had developed the recipe using rum from the Long Pond Distillery. The brand is now owned by the Diageo Conglomerate, and their Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is the best-selling spiced rum in the world. The subject of this review revisitation, is the lessor known Captain Morgan Silver Spiced Rum, which, is a blend of clear, rich Puerto Rican white rum and tropical spice with sweet vanilla character. It is bottled at 35% alcohol by volume. Here is a link to the full review which includes a great cocktail of mine, the Spiced Darwin:

Review: Captain Morgan Silver Spiced Rum

“… The initial aroma is pleasant with a pleasing (but very mild) mixture of butterscotch and vanilla rising into the breezes. I sense some tropical fruit (mango, banana and orange peel) and light accents of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Also rising into the breezes is a very light oakiness…. “

Please enjoy the review, Chimo!

Review: Blue Chair Bay Coconut Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 25, 2014

Allie's Punch SAM_1366Fishbowl Spirits Llc. is a company wholly owned by Kenny Chesney, the well-known Country Music Singer from Knoxville, Tennessee. In May, 2013 Fishbowl Spirits launched Blue Chair Bay Rum, which features an assortment of rums which were apparently inspired by the relaxed island lifestyle of the county music star. The line-up includes an assortment of flavoured rums (a Coconut Rum, a Coconut Spiced Rum, a Banana Rum and a limited time only Coconut Spiced Rum Cream, as well as a standard White Rum. Although Blue Bay Chair Rum is based in Nashville, the assortment of rums they produce are distilled in Barbados and then bottled in Rochester NY by LiDestri Food & Beverage.

Three of these spirits, the Coconut and Coconut Spiced rums, as well as the White Rum have been brought into Alberta by Glazer’s Of Canada Llc, and they arranged for me to receive all three rums to review here on my website.

You may click the link below to read my full review of Blue Chair Bay Coconut Spiced Punch, which incidentally was awarded the highest score I have ever granted in the Spiced category!

Review: Blue Chair Bay Coconut Spiced Rum

“… The aroma seems mellow and relaxed with scents of sweetened coconut and light spices running through the breezes …”

At the conclusion of the review I share my newest cocktail recipe which mixes the Coconut Spiced Rum with delicious fresh squeezed fruit and ginger ale. I chose to coll the new mixed drink, Allie’s Cocktail.

Cheers Everyone!

Review: Wild Geese Caribbean Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 18, 2014

srumThe Wild Geese Rum Collection is the companion to the Wild Geese Irish Whisky Collection. While the Wild Geese Irish Whisky collection sought to bring the Story of the Wild Geese and their struggles in European Armies to light, the Wild Geese Rum Collection continues the saga bringing to light the story of some of these Wild Geese who after service in the continental armies of Europe found themselves transported to America and the Caribbean where many worked upon the Rum Plantations in the new world.

The Wild Geese Caribbean Spiced Rum has been aged for up to five years and has been blended with tropical fruits and spice. You may read my full review  here:

Review: Wild Geese Caribbean Spiced Rum

“…  the possibilities for mixing the Caribbean Spiced Rum seems to be opening up in front of me as I sip. The initial flavour impressions I receive across my palate are similar to what I experienced as I nosed the glass. I sense a trio of fruitiness which resembles cherry licorice, fresh mango and sliced pineapple …”

Please enjoy my review which includes two cocktail suggestions, the Metro Swizzle, and the Spiced Darwin.

Cheers Everyone!
