Review: Crown Royal Salted Caramel

Crown Royal Canadian Whisky is produced in Gimli, Manitoba, at the Crown Royal Distillery. The distillery and the brand are owned by the spirits conglomerate, Diageo, and I think it is fair to say that Crown Royal is Diageo’s flagship Canadian Whisky brand. About a year ago Crown Salted Caramel Whisky was introduced as an addition to the Crown Royal family of whiskies. This is as far as I know the first flavoured whisky ever produced by Crown, and it presents itself as a Maple Finished™’ rather than maple flavoured.

According to the Crown Royal website:

“Crown Royal Salted Caramel Flavored Whisky is a blend of the finest Canadian whiskies, carefully selected by our Master Blenders and infused with the subtly salty-sweet taste of indulgent salted caramels – imparting lush, creamy notes that perfectly compliment the richness of Crown Royal Whisky.”

“… The delivery brings the flavour of maple and caramel forward with a nice peppery spiciness of oak and grain following along. I am happy that the spirit is demonstrating its whisky character despite the firm flavour of maple. As I sip I notice the spiciness carries a light flavour of black pepper and orange peel zest …”

Review: Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel (2017)

Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel is the first production Canadian Whisky ever to sold in the single barrel format. It drawn from a single oak cask and bottled a full 51.5 % alcohol by volume bottling proof. For this whisky, Crown Royal Master Blender, Andrew MacKay, hand selected the barrels to be used for this expression. Because each barrel will have different characteristics there will be differences in each individual barrel bottled. However, the casks chosen share common characteristic flavour profiles which gives the brand a general consistency of flavour and maturation.

“… The scents in the breezes include rich oak spices and lush caramel toffee, some lovely bourbon-like honeycomb with vanilla, pipe tobacco, rye spices and bitter rye kernel. As I let the glass breathe, impressions of maple and cola evolved with vanilla and baking spices. Marmalade, canned apricots and almond turning to marzipan rounds out the wonderful nose …”

Review: Liquormen’s Ol’ Dirty Canadian Whisky

Liquormen’s Ol’ Dirty Canadian Whisky is a celebrity branded whisky which celebrates the classic Canadian television Series Trailer Park Boys, as well as a the Liquormen of the old West.

According to the Liquormen’s website, there was a group of ruthless bandit’s called the Liquormen in the late 1800’s. They weren’t interested in gold or jewels, rather they stole liquor. Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles (the Trailer Park Boys) launched Liquormen’s Ol’ Dirty Canadian Whisky in 2016 to honour the legacy of those Old West Bandits.

“… There are some corn and rye scents as well as a light dusting of wood spice, but these scents are to large extent ambushed by the building sweetness and the dank sour fruitiness. There is also a firm hint of alcohol astringency and a light grassy quality in the air which each warn me that the spirit is quite young and immature …”

Review: Pendleton 1910 Canadian Whisky (Aged 12 Years)

Pendleton 1910 Canadian Whisky is a 100 % Canadian Whisky. The spirit is produced and aged in Calgary Alberta, and then transported to Oregon where it is brought to bottling proof by Hood River Distillers using the glacial fed waters from Mt. Hood. The whisky is named to honour the year of the very first Pendleton Round-up, which is a respected rodeo in Pendleton, Oregon. In fact, Pendleton Whisky sponsors numerous rodeos, including the aforementioned  the Pendleton Round-Up, the Cheyenne Frontier Days, and the Walla Walla Frontier Days.

“… The oak deepens over time and a few scents of charcoal are added to the fray. Some mild baking spices evolve (ginger, nutmeg and ever so light scents of cinnamon), and as the glass sits even longer, the whisky reveals more as I now sense maple syrup and butter on hot toasted white bread. I like how the sweet scents of honey, butterscotch and maple are mingling playfully with the hotter, spicier oak and rye …”

#Top100CanadianWhisky #10: Forty Creek Heritage

Forty Creek Whisky has a very nice annual tradition of producing a special limited release whisky which is built upon the foundation of the company’s flagship whisky, Forty Creek Barrel Select. These annual special releases each seek to bring new character to the Forty Creek family. This year Forty Creek sought to go back to their roots with the release of Heritage.

According to the press release issued this past Spring when Forty Creek Heritage was announced, this year’s special limited edition whisky was crafted selected barrels of Forty Creek corn, rye, and barley whiskies. The blended whiskies were then married (or finished) in toasted American Oak barrels to release elegant vanilla flavours and to highlight the bold wood spices of the toasted oak. The whisky was released in the fall of 2017 just in time for the Christmas buying season.
