Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Pumpkin Spiced Shotte

My Fall Cocktail Bazaar was inspired by the recipes (and the samples) sent to me by the media team which represents Smirnoff which is a Diageo owned Vodka Brand. Diageo also owns the Captain Morgan brand and the same company which handles media relations for the Smirnoff brand does the same for Captain Morgan. So it was not really a surprise to me when they reached out and asked me to include at least one Captain Morgan inspired recipe in my Bazaar as well. In that vein, here is a great Halloween recipe from Captain Morgan which uses both their Pumpkin Spiced Rum and their Coconut flavoured Captain Morgan LocoNut, as well as a nice helping of coffee and whipped cream:

Pumpkin Spiced Shotte

1 oz. Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast
1 oz. Captain Morgan LocoNut
2 oz. Cold Brew
Ice
Whipped Cream, Cinnamon
Carmel Drizzle

Combine Jack-O’Blast, LocoNut and cold brew in a metal shaker with ice
Shake Until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Pour into 2.5 oz. shot glass rimmed with cinnamon
Top with Whipped Cream and a caramel drizzle.

Note: Captain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced Rum is a Limited Edition Spiced Rum meant to inhabit the “shots” category and was the first the first pumpkin spiced rum offering available. The premise of the spiced flavour is ‘autumn in a shot glass’ as Captain Morgan has blended Caribbean rum with fall flavors of pumpkin and cinnamon (as well as other autumnal spices) creating what they hope will be an insanely delicious shot. Note: Captain Morgan LocoNut is a gluten-free blend of Caribbean Rum, Coconut Liqueur, Spice and Natural Flavours, and it arrives in a nifty scratch and sniff coconut shaped (and apparently scented) round rum bottle .

According to the Captain Morgan:

After blasting into the shots category with CAPTAIN MORGAN Cannon Blast, CAPTAIN MORGAN LocoNut is shaking things up with its new coconut-flavored shot which comes in a coconut-shaped bottle, smells like a coconut and yeah, you guessed it, tastes like a coconut. Review: Rum Nation Jamaica 7 Year Old Pot Still Rum

Rum Nation is an Italian company created by Fabio Rossi, who began his life in the spirits trade as a Oenologist (one who has studied wine-making). After his studies, Mr. Rossi left the wine business and started up a whisky company in Edinburgh (Wilson and Morgan) acting as an independent bottler of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. His interest turned to rum, and in 1999 Fabio Rossi founded Rum Nation. His company is headquartered in Italy; but Fabio purchases select rums from various distillers in the Caribbean and the Americas. As a result Rum Nation provides a rather unique assortment of limited edition bottlings. One such bottling is Rum Nation Jamaica 7 Year Old Pot Still Rum (2018 release).

The 7 Year Old Jamaican Pot Still Rum was distilled upon a traditional Jamaican Pot Still (at Worthy Park) and aged for 7 years in the tropics in used American Oak barrels. The spirit was bottled at 61.2 % alcohol by volume with no dilution from cask strength. No colouring has been added, and the rum has not been chill filtered.

“… A firm brown sugar sweetness accompanies vanilla and baking spice (cinnamon. nutmeg and cloves), and I am reminded of the flavour of fresh cinnamon buns. Oak spice, menthol, peppermint, camphor and resin add complexity …”

Review: Flor de Caña 7 Blanco Reserva

Flor de Caña has a history of rum production which is dated to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The company was founded by Francisco Alfredo Pellas and today, over 120 years later, the company is led headed by the fifth generation of the Pellas family. It has grown to be not only one of Central America’s leading brands of rum, it is also one of the most recognized rum brands in the world. According to the company website, all of the Flor de Caña rum is produced from molasses which is made from sugar cane harvested in fields adjacent to the distillery in Chichigalpa. This molasses is fermented and then distilled five times in a continuous column still. The resulting distillate is laid down to age in small American white oak barrels in traditional aging warehouses built without air conditioning in an undisturbed environment.

Flor de Caña 7 Blanco Reserva is a premium white rum with the number 7 on the label representative of the average age of the rums in the blend with some variation in the actual age based upon blending to a consistent flavour profile. Although the rums within the blend have been aged, they are filtered clear making the spirit suitable for mixed drinks and short cocktails.

“… The aroma rising up from the glass contains nice notes of vanilla tinges with caramel and banana. There is a light hint menthol alongside, and some light citrus notes (orange peel and lemon) as well …”

Review: Captain Morgan Apple Smash (Flavoured Rum)

A few weeks ago I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Morgans Apple Smash. The product was described to me as a gluten-free flavoured rum which arrives in a nifty scratch and sniff (apparently apple scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released: Captain Morgan Loconut, and Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash Rums.

Apple Smash is bottled at 30 % alcohol by volume and was apparently is designed to be served as a chilled shot, mixed with cinnamon whiskey, or in a cocktail with ginger ale.

These new ‘shot style’ flavoured rums have been a bit of a hit or miss affair as far as my reviews have been concerned. I gave  Captain Morgan Loconut a big thumbs up with a score of 87/100; however Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash did not fare so well with a thumbs down score of 68.5/100. The only thing to do is to open my bottle, take a few sniffs and a few swallows, make a few cocktails, so I can report my feeling on the new Captain Morgan Apple Smash Rum.

“… Whether the flavoured rum inside the bottle receives a thumbs up or a thumbs down (or something in between) the bottle itself receives a huge thumbs up. It  is designed to resemble a green apple and if you scratch the surface of the label, it even carries a realistic green apple scent …”

Review: Black Magic Spiced Rum

Black Magic Rum is a brand of dark spiced rum owned by Sazerac.

This dark spiced rum has an interesting back story which links the spirit to the magic of an ancient sorceress who lived on an island off the coast of Africa. This island apparently existed ‘before time itself’ and was inhabited by a people ‘full of gaiety and life’. Unfortunately this wonderful island sank; but before it did the sorceress imbued the ‘essence and spirit of her people’ into their native drink. Making a rather long story short, several bottles of the magical liquid have turned up over time giving rise to (among other things), the great Pharaohs of Egypt, the Emperors and Dynasties of China, and even the brilliance of William Shakespeare.

One last bottle of this wonderful elixir was found by a Sea Czar whose ship’s steward promptly stole it. This steward ended up in the Caribbean and is said to have began to add a single drop of his magical liquid into each bottle of a dark and mysterious spiced Caribbean Rum (which of course he began to sell). The Steward is long gone, but the implication is that his magical liquid can be found ‘should you ever find a rum marked with the hidden sign of the ancient sorceress’s protection.

That’s not much to go on; but fortunately I was given a sample bottle so that I could taste the spirit and provide this review.  Here is a link to that review:

“… Caramel, indications of molasses and licorice, and hints of cinnamon all greeted my palate with a light sweep of vanilla. I mixed a rum and cola next and that rum and cola serving became the basis of a few pleasant evenings on my back deck this past summer (until the wood smoke from the British Columbia forest fires chased me indoors) …”
