Review: Rum Nation Ilha da Madeira 3 Year Old

Rum Nation is an Italian company created by Fabio Rossi, who began his life in the spirits trade as a Oenologist (one who has studied winemaking). After his studies, Mr. Rossi left the wine business and started up a whisky company in Edinburgh (Wilson and Morgan) acting as an independent bottler of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. His interest turned to rum and in 1999 Fabio Rossi founded Rum Nation. His company is headquartered in Italy; but Fabio purchases select rums from various distillers in the Caribbean and the Americas. As a result Rum Nation provides a rather unique assortment of rare limited edition rum bottlings.

One such bottling is Rum Nation Ilha da Madeira 3 Year Old bottled at 42 % alcohol by Volume.

“… As the rhum breathes, I notice light floral character developing which seems to be connected with the herbal notes within the spirit. Banana, more green grape a light winding mint, and hints ginger and cinnamon round out the nose which is quite delightful …”

Review: Chamarel VSOP Rum (2006)

La Rhumerie de Chamarel is located on the Island Nation of Mauritius which is situated several hundred miles east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The distillery cultivates its own sugarcane with a harvest is done by hand, without ever burning the crops. Freshly harvested sugarcane is transferred to the Distillery within within 4 hours of being cut to preserve its freshness and aromas.

Chamarel VSOP is produced from rums distilled on both the plate column (90 %) and the copper still (10 %).  Each style of rum is aged separately for 4 to 6 years in Ex-American Oak Barrels & Ex-French Oak Barrels in the La Rhumerie de Chamarel aging cellars.

” … I notice lots of fine oak spice in the breezes mingling with vanilla and butterscotch. There is also a nice herbal note which began as a wisp, but soon grew in stature asserting itself into the oak and butterscotch. I also begin to notice notes resembling dried raisins, almonds, orange peel, camphor, as well as hints of cinnamon and mint …”

Review: Rum Nation British Guyana 10 Year Old (Cask Strength)

One such bottling is Rum Nation British Guyana 10 Year Old (Cask Strength) bottled at 56.5 % alcohol by Volume. The Rum Nation British Guyana 10 Year Old (Cask Strength) rum is a blend of distillates from three different or the historic stills from the original DDL old distillation plant, the French Savalle still, the wooden Coffey still, and the double wooden pot still.

“… Wow! The rum kicks you in the tonsils and then makes a fair attempt to sear the throat. This is not a smooth easy going dram. This is a mouth clobbering rum!  But man oh man, does it pack in a lot of flavour! Molasses, licorice and treacle, heated orange peel, astringent oak sap even a bit of acidic bite. I taste sherry-like flavours of raisins and dates, with coffee and dark bitter cocoa …”

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

Pusser’s Rum is advertised as the original rum of the British Royal Navy. And it is a fact that for over 300 years it was a tradition of the British Navy that each member of the crew was issued a daily ‘tot’ of rum. This tradition began in 1655, and by 1731, the tradition of the daily ‘tot’ was in general use throughout the British Navy. As it was the ship’s purser who was responsible for issuing the rum, the tot of rum became known as Pusser’s Rum in a sort of slang derivation of the term ‘Purser’s Rum’. Although the naval tradition of the daily tot had ended, in 1979  Charles Tobias obtained the rights for the British Naval Rum, and formed Pusser’s Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

When I recently received rum samples from 1423 World Class Spirits, I noticed that the label on the Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum stated the rum is bottled by Pusser’s Rum LTD. (British Virgin Islands), and that it is a product of Guyana. This is a departure from my previously reviewed Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum which was sent to me two years ago (which was a Product of Barbados). It is also a departure from the product as advertised on the Pusser’s Website which is stated to be a product of of the  Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados.

I suspect that Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum changes its lineage based upon which blending rums are more economical, or perhaps different markets receive different blends, based upon the export market’s presumed preferences.

Review: Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva

This past Christmas, I reviewed the 24 Rums which were featured in the 1423 World Class Spirits – 2019 24 Days of Rum Calendar. The reviews were written based upon my my taste impressions from a small (20ml) sample of each rum which was provided in the European edition of that said rum advent.

I was also sent larger 50ml samples of each rum in the American version of that same rum advent and during the New Year with more time to evaluate each spirit and with a larger sample I have been able to more fully round out each of these reviews adjusted the scores to more accurately reflect my feelings towards each spirit.

Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva is produced at he Hacienda Agicola in Chiclayo, an small enclave near the sea in Northern Peru. This new rum has been produced from an original recipe, and is designed to be a lighter fresher version of Ron Millonario yet with the same rich raisin-like flavour profile the brand is known for.

“… If you do not like sweet rums then this is one to leave alone. However, if you do not mind the more honeyed path, then this rum is for you as it is full of yummy flavours of caramel, chocolate and cocoa. There is just enough oak character and spice to contrast the sweetness …”
