Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 14, 2020

Pusser’s Rum is advertised as the original rum of the British Royal Navy. And it is a fact that for over 300 years it was a tradition of the British Navy that each member of the crew was issued a daily ‘tot’ of rum. This tradition began in 1655, and by 1731, the tradition of the daily ‘tot’ was in general use throughout the British Navy. As it was the ship’s purser who was responsible for issuing the rum, the tot of rum became known as Pusser’s Rum in a sort of slang derivation of the term ‘Purser’s Rum’. Although the naval tradition of the daily tot had ended, in 1979  Charles Tobias obtained the rights for the British Naval Rum, and formed Pusser’s Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

When I recently received rum samples from 1423 World Class Spirits, I noticed that the label on the Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum stated the rum is bottled by Pusser’s Rum LTD. (British Virgin Islands), and that it is a product of Guyana. This is a departure from my previously reviewed Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum which was sent to me two years ago (which was a Product of Barbados). It is also a departure from the product as advertised on the Pusser’s Website which is stated to be a product of of the  Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados.

I suspect that Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum changes its lineage based upon which blending rums are more economical, or perhaps different markets receive different blends, based upon the export market’s presumed preferences.

Here is a link to the review for the Guyanese version of the ovenproof Gunpowder Rum:

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

“… I notice aromas of dark brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, herbal pot still esters, and very light oak spice. As the glass sits, baking spices begin to evolve, I receive impressions of cinnamon buns, hints of licorice and tar and a hit of molasses …”

Please enjoy this expanded version of my review which now includes a cocktail suggestion, the Zombie.

24 Days of Rum (#3) – Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2019

After a stellar start, my 24 Days of Rum Advent took a step back today with the #3 selection in he 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box. I suspect many others will appreciate Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (from Guyana) much more than I did, but I promised honest reviews so I have to call this one the way I see it.

Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum is relatively new to the Pusser’s range. According to the producer’s website it is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the ship’s purser shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tot by mixing a few grains of gunpowder to the rum to see if it would burn. If the mixture ignited, the rum was ‘at proof.’ If it didn’t, the purser might find himself tossed to sea.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the third spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box advent:

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

“… Hard to get past the heat, but the rum tastes thin as if there is not much age here. Some pungent baking spice (nutmeg and clove) and lightly bitter vanillans …”

Please enjoy my review of the Gunpowder Rum, a spirit which would be much more at home in a Zombie Cocktail than a sipping glass.

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. As indicated in my previously published review (here) This Rum Advent Calendar is a highly recommended gift for the rum enthusiast.

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum

“… The nose is heavy with aromas of brown sugar, caramel and molasses. Within the brown sugary caramel I sense a building up of baking spices (vanilla, with some hints of nutmeg and cinnamon) and dry fruit (heavy on dry raisins and light on dates and prunes). Perhaps I am gleaning some wisps of black licorice and asphalt tar as well …”

Please enjoy the review which includes a nice cocktail suggestion, the Magazine.
