Review: J.P. Wiser’s Guy Lafleur Alumni Whisky

A couple years ago J.P. Wiser’s and the NHL Alumni Association (NHLAA) got together to bring whisky fans something uniquely Canadian. Regionally marketed whiskies which were blended with the aim of mimicking characteristics of each region’s favourite Hockey Players.

J.P. Wiser’s Guy Lafleur Alumni Whisky is a pretty special whisky as it is one of only a few single grain 100 % corn whiskies released by J.P. Wiser’s to date. In keeping with the chosen alumni member it is meant to represent, the spirit has been aged 10 years (Guy Lafleur wore number 10 on his jersey), and the whisky is described as ‘Naturally Smooth” which is in keeping with how Guy’s playing style was often described. The spirit was matured in a unique manner being aged for 10 years in American Oak and then finished in Speyside, bourbon, and rum barrels.

“… The breezes bring initial impressions of oak spice and corn with light vanilla and butterscotch accents. Although this is a 100 % corn whisky there is nevertheless an impression of spicy rye grain in the air and as the glass breathes I also notice impressions of rich maple and marmalade with hints of marzipan …”

Review: Golden Stag Whisky

Golden Stag Rye Whisky is produced by the Sperling Silver Distillery in Regina Saskatchewan. The Distillery began as the Slow Food Brew Pub which produced 6 different varieties of beer, cider and wine. During the production process they found that there was unfiltered by-product left over after every fermentation. So, an application was placed with the Saskatchewan government to build a small micro Distillery so that they could recycle these left overs into distilled spirit. Upon receiving approval, the Sperling Silver Distillery was created.

One of the distilled spirits which the Distillery currently produces is Golden Stag Blended Rye Whisky bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume. Here is a link to my review:

Review Bearface Triple Oak Canadian Whisky

Bearface Triple Oak Canadian Whisky is a product of Bearface Spirits (owned by Mark Anthony Wine and Spirits).

The company does not have its own distillery for making whisky so to make their Bearface brand they begin by sourcing a mature 7-year-old Canadian single grain whisky which was aged in in ex-bourbon American oak casks. The mature whisky was then transported 4000 miles across Canada to Mission Hill British Columbia to placed in red wine soaked French oak casks for a first period of finishing. The whisky was then finished for a second time in virgin Hungarian Oak.

“… The initial aroma is rich with  maple and butterscotch scents accompanied by fruity rye, canned fruit vanilla and baking spice. As the glass sits oak spice builds melding into the aroma which creates the impression of a yummy whisky elixir within the glass …”

Review: Gooderham and Worts Eleven Souls

Last year, Corby Spirit and Wine Limited added Gooderham and Worts Eleven Souls to its 2018 Northern Borders Rare Collection whisky line-up. The whisky pays homage to William Gooderham act of generosity when he  cared for eleven orphans on their voyage to Canada. According to family accounts, Gooderham is reported to have all but adopted all of these children. In keeping with the tradition of the story of these eleven souls eleven different whisky casks were blended to create this whisky expression These casks were filled with spirit of various distillation methods comprised of five different grains (malted and unmalted rye, Brasetto rye, red winter wheat, malted and unmalted barley and corn) each aged in new white oak, ex bourbon casks or Canadian whisky casks.

… The copper hued spirit brings dry spicy scents into the breezes with fine wood and rye spices taking the lead. This is followed with light vanilla and butterscotch aromas mingled with hints of marzipan. As the glass sits the aromas deepen bringing lush corn accents with mouth watering maple and impressions of rich tobacco, canned fruit and yummy marmalade …”

Review: Canadian Club Barley Batch Limited Edition Whisky

Barley Batch Highball

In the fall of 2018 Canadian Club released a special Limited Edition Whisky which celebrated Canadian Club’s 160th anniversary in the fall of 2018, the Canadian Club Barely Edition. Just as the name implies this is a whisky which relies heavily upon the influence of barley grain as the whisky is a blending of six-year-old barley malt whisky (produced in Calgary by Alberta Distillers) with Canadian Club’s flagship Canadian Club Whisky (produced in Windsor Ontario  at the Hiram Walker Distillery.

This Canadian Only release recently became available in my home Province of Alberta, and I manged to secure a bottle for tasting. I found it interesting that Canadian Club has chosen to bottle this expression at 42 % alcohol by volume rather than the traditional 40 % abv. which is more typical of the Canadian Club Family.

“… The initial aroma is filled with herbal grass and menthol accented by butterscotch, almond and vanilla. I begin to notice scents of burlap and barley pushing their way through with some wood spices in the background. The herbal nature of the spirit is intriguing; this is quite a departure for the Canadian Club brand …”
