2016 Spiced Rum Taste-off: Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 27, 2016

Captain Morgan Black SpicedCaptain Morgan Black Spiced Rum was released in 2012, and it pays homage to the story of Captain Morgan’s burial on the shores of Port Royal Harbour, Jamaica in 1688. Apparently (according to the information sent to my by the Captain Morgan media team) an earthquake struck Jamaica just after the good Captain was buried. His casket was dislodged from its tomb and washed out to sea. It was never recovered, and to this day it has been suggested that perhaps his spirit lives on haunting the seas of the Caribbean searching for his lost remains.

The Captain Morgan website tells us that this rum is crafted with Blackstrap Rum which indicated to me that the rum as well as being spiced has been enhanced with caramel/molasses to enrich the flavour as give the rum its darkened hue. The rum is bottle at 47.3% alcohol by volume.

Here is a link to my recently published review:

#13 Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

” … Taking a sip, I notice the rum leads out with a spicy “candied” flavour. I taste cherry licorice, molasses and caramel, lots of vanilla, and spicy cloves and cinnamon. At first I was not overly enthusiastic, but I admit that over time the flavour grew on me. Although it is relatively smooth considering its high alcohol content, the Captain Morgan Black Spiced does still gnaw a little at the tonsils …”

2016 Rum Howler Spiced Rum Taste-off

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 31, 2016

Several weeks ago I found myself staring at all the spiced rums on my rumshelf in my tasting room. I had a little over 20, and most of them were barely touched. I had done my review for each, made a cocktail or two, and then sealed the bottles and moved on. I even had several full bottles that had were still sealed as often when samples are sent to me, the producer sends two bottles rather than one. While staring at the spirits the thought occurred to me that perhaps I ought to do something constructive with my spiced rum selection. So, I decided that I should re-taste all of these rums, create new tasting notes, and update my reviews especially as I was curious how the older reviews would stand up.

krakenThose who are regular readers know that I like to present the results from these types of exercises in a ‘Countdown’ format, and so during the next two months I shall be present the results, one spiced rum at a time, beginning with the rum which ranked 20th on my newly created list, then work my way down to the spiced rum which I feel is the best in my tasting room. As I publish the new reviews, I will be replacing my older review with the newer ones such that by the time I am done, all of the reviews will be updated with the new tasting notes and scores. (In a few cases when the older review stands up well with my current thoughts (especially of the published review is current) I have left the older review as it is.)

Today I shall begin with the Rum which ranked Number 20, on my Rum Howler 2016 Spiced Rum Countdown, the Kraken Black Spiced Rum, here is the new review:

#20   The Kraken Black Spiced Rum

“… The merry little breezes above the glass tell me a story of peppery spice and licorice. Cinnamon is revealed along with wiffs of cloves, plum preserves, and black cherries. The black spiced rum has an almost medicinal quality as there is also more than a hint of menthol in those breezes which as it combines with the fruity smells of black cherries and plums makes me think of cough medicine and Jagermeister …”

I hope you all find this countdown enjoyable and you can follow the rankings here:

Review: Captain Morgan’s Black Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 10, 2016

Captain Morgan Black SpicedRecently the media team responsible for Captain Morgan Rum in North American has began sending me recipe suggestions (as well as samples) for most of that expanding range. This is because Captain Morgan has been rapidly expanding their family of rums in the USA to include a new white rum, (Captain Morgan White Rum), three flavoured rums (Captain Morgan Pineapple, Grapefruit and Coconut Rums), and three spiced rums (Captain Morgan Original Spiced, 100 Proof, Black Spiced and Cannon Blast Rums). You can click the links to read the review for each.

This has given me a good excuse to review each of the new rums and to revisit some of those spirits which I had previously reviewed. One of those previously reviewed spirits is Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum. The Black Spiced Rum was released in 2012, and it pays homage to the story of Captain Morgan’s burial on the shores of Port Royal Harbour, Jamaica in 1688.

Here is a link to my latest review for the Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum:

Review: Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

“… The scent of vanilla is quite strong, and this aroma is accompanied by molasses-like notes of treacle, dark caramel, and bits of dark licorice. I also sense an overt spiciness of cinnamon, and cloves. As the glass sits, I also seem to catch a firm indication of cherry cola …”

Please enjoy my review which includes a new cocktail recipe, the Honey Badger.

Chimo!
