Cocktail Hour: The Bourbon Buckeroo

It’s time for another deck drink, and the Bourbon Buckeroo is one of my favourites. Deck drinks as you know are that class of cocktails which are so easy to make that you can literally put all of your bar tools away and mix them up on your backyard deck as you enjoy the sunshine. No shakers, no strainers, and no fuss.

The great thing about deck drinks is that they are not only easy to make, they are also refreshing crowd-pleasers. You can haul your cooler full of ice out on to your back deck, fill it with cans of soda, place a couple of bottles of rum and whisky on the table with tray of sliced fruit and maybe a bottle of bitters, and then everyone can mix their own bar drinks to their own taste.

Buckeroo SAM_2401The Bourbon Buckeroo requires just three ingredients: Bourbon, Cola, and Bitters. Bourbon, which is at its heart a corn whiskey, mixes particularly well with cola and adding a dash or two of bitters gives this deck drink a nice extra depth of flavour. Of course, lots of ice makes it a cold refreshing serve on a lazy hot afternoon.

You probably do not need the recipe repeated; but here it is anyways:

Bourbon Buckeroo

1 1/2 oz Bourbon (George Dickel No. 12 in this case)
dash Angostura Bitters
Ice
Cola
Slice of Lime for garnish (optional)

Build in a tall glass with ice
Complete with Cola
Garnish with a lime slice

Review: Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select Whiskey (Batch 3)

WoodfordWoodford Reserve Distiller’s Select is a Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey, distilled and bottled at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in  Versailles Kentucky. The folks at Woodford Reserve pride themselves in the manufacture of what they call ‘craft bourbon’. The Kentucky distillery is apparently located over top of a deep limestone aquifer which contains mineral rich (iron free) limestone water. This is of course the aquifer from which the distillery draws the water required for fermentation of their rye rich grain mash. (This mash is composed of 72 % corn, 10 % barley, and 18 % rye grain.)

The fermentation tanks are constructed from cypress which (according to the folks at Woodford Reserve) helps to eliminate unwanted flavours which could arise in a stainless steel fermentation tank. The wash is distilled three times on copper pots stills to a full 158 proof, and the resulting new make is barreled in freshly charred new oak barrels prepared by the distillers own cooperage. The spirit is set down to mature in a temperature controlled warehouse where it is carefully monitored to be bottled when the right flavour characteristic has been achieved.

Review: Broken Bell Bourbon

SAM_0982 Broken Bell BuckerooBroken Bell Bourbon is a whiskey brand developed by Distiller Sales Company of Princeton, Minnesota. Distiller Sales is a division of a company called USDP (United States Distilled Spirits Co.). They describe themselves as a “leading developer of corporate brand distilled spirits programs”.  The company boast sales in 32 Countries worldwide, and some of those brands which are available in my home market include: Ethan Koll 8 Year Old Canadian Whisky, Cross Keys 5 Yr Old Barbados Rum, Monkey Paw Rum, Luxus Vodka, Capatina French Vodka and Veil Premium Vodka.

I was provided a sample bottle of Broken Bell Bourbon by Jfj Agency Inc. who is the distributor of Distiller Sales Co. brands in Alberta.

“… The aroma from the glass is typical of a young bourbon featuring fresh oak scents melded with barbequed corn. I sense spicy tobacco and raisins, dried apricots, some spicy oak sap and orange peel spice …”

Review: Bison Ridge Special Reserve (8 Year Old) Canadian Whisky

BisonMy friends Connie & Lukasz were over the other day, and even though they know my cupboard is well stocked with Canadian whisky, they always try to find something that I haven’t tasted yet. On this occasion, they brought along a bottle of Bison Ridge Special Reserve Canadian Whisky to share a few drams with me. The whisky is produced (by this I mean bottled) by the Crosby Lake Spirits Company who are located in Minnesota, USA. All Canadian whisky must (by law) be distilled and aged in Canada; however, I could not locate any information as to which Canadian Distillery was the source for this brand.

“… The initial nose reflects sweet butterscotch, some notes of corn mash, with wood spices rising in the background. Chinook Whisky Revisited

If you look at the picture to the left, you can see that Chinook Canadian Whisky has undergone a bit of a facelift since I reviewed it last year (Click here for the 2011 review). It arrives in a new PET Bottle, and it has a brand new label. Gone is the 5-Year age statement, and gone as well is the reference to being distilled, aged and blended in Calgary, Alberta. Rather, the label now simply says “aged and blended in Southern Alberta” with no reference to where the whisky is distilled.

When I first saw the new bottle, I was surprised, and of course my first question was, “Has the blend changed?”

To help me answer that question, I was sent a new bottle for review from the brand owner Mcbsw Sales Company Inc., such that I could revisit the Chinook Whisky here on my website.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… My first impression as the new whisky crossed my palate for the first time, was that the sweetness and the fruitiness have been ramped up in this blend. Stronger caramel flavours were obvious as was a spicy green pepper lingering in the background. Caramel apples, slightly sour purple grapes, canned apricots, and canned pears all seem to find their way across my palate in what is a real mixture of fruit flavour. I taste some rye-like spiciness which resembles ginger and cloves with maybe just a dash of cinnamon …”
