My Early Reviews of Renegade Rums

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 10, 2011

This week I am re-posting my early reviews of the rums from the Renegade Rum Company.

One of the aspects of these rums which sets them apart from other rums is the barrels chosen for refinishing. Not second run whiskey barrels from the United States, but rather more exotic wine barrels from selected wineries in Europe.  They produce Port finished rums from Panama and Barbados,  and Chateau Latour finished rums from Jamaica and Guyana. Renegade also experiments with a Madeira finished Guyanese rum.  And those are but a few.

These rums are unique and quite unlike anything produced anywhere else in the world.  They do not taste like traditional rums, rather they taste like new hybrid spirits with the influence from the finishing casks setting their imprint firmly into the rum.

For more information please visit the Renegade Rum Website.

Here are the links to my early Renegade Rum Reviews:

Review: Renegade Guyana Uitvlught 1995

Review: Renegade Rum Company 2000 Jamaica Rum

The Review for the Renegade Uitvlught 1995 includes a cocktail designed specifically for that rum, A Sloe Walk in the Jungle.

(Just to be upfront with everyone I admit that I have edited the reviews to correct the old typos that I have noticed, and in some cases to clarify my somewhat terse writing style. But the scores and the essence of each review has remained the same.)

Please enjoy this re-posting of my Renegade Rum Reviews!

Review: Atlantico Private Cask Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 8, 2011

At Rum Renaissance 2011, in Miami Florida I was lucky enough to be treated to an information session hosted by Brandon Lieb, of the Atlantico Importing Company. I was allowed to sample their present offering, Atlantico Private Cask Rum, as well as sample two new products which were in development. Atlantico Rum is planning to expand their range with a new white rum, and a new anejo rum to add to the success of their Private Cask Rum. As their guest, I was given a bottle of the Atlantico Private Cask Rum after the presentation and I have decided to review the rum here on my website.

The Atlantico Private Cask Rum is a private label rum produced by Oliver and Oliver,  for Atlantico Rum. (If you have not heard of Oliver and Oliver, I should explain that they are an independent bottler of rum operating in the Dominican Republic.  They buy barreled rum from major rum producers, and then age it using a solera aging system in the “Cuban” style.)  Oliver and Oliver was given a specific flavour profile to blend towards, and working in conjunction with the Atlantico team, the Private Cask Rum was developed through a series of blending and tasting exercises. The result is a rum constructed to be a smooth easy to sip rum which is hoped will appeal to a wide variety of palates.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…Taking a little time with my glass I began to notice some nice oak and baking spice entwined in the caramel and honey flavour. Vanilla is very obvious as is the maple I detected on the nose. Deeper down I taste faint echoes of tobacco….”

As well I have included a nice “Mule “style cocktail for your enjoyment.

Review: Nemіroff Premіum Lіme Vodka

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 5, 2011

Nemiroff Premium Lime was introduced to the Nemiroff brand line-up in August of 2006.  According to the Nemiroff website, the Premium Lime Vodka undergoes 10 stages of purification and is additionally polished with the specially prepared absorbent. Additionally, real citrus and lime aromas are used in the production of Nemіroff Premіum Lіme.  The citrus aroma is the first and the most perceptible note of the new drink, it changes gradually into the central note of lime which brings about a subtle, but pleasant lime aftertaste.  As with all of the Nemiroff vodkas, all the ingredients of this  new vodka are completely natural.

I was asked to review the Nemiroff Premium Lime by Igor Kashcan, who is the importer of Nemiroff Vodka here in Alberta, Canada.  Here is an excerpt from the resulting review:

“…when the Vodka was introduced to my mouth it coated my tongue and my palate with a nice creaminess, but only the flavour of lime was forefront. Lime is a very aggressive flavour, and I suspect that this is why I was not able to detect any other underlying grain  flavours….”

As well, I included a nice recipe which I heartily recommend for the Nemiroff Premium Lime, The De Lurey.

Please enjoy the review and cocktail!

Review: O2 Premium Sparkling Vodka

Posted by Arctic Wolf on April 28, 2011

O2 Premium Sparkling Vodka bills itself as the world’s first Premium Sparkling Vodka. When I sampled this spirit at the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival I was actually quite smitten by what I encountered, hints of citrus, and some awesome tiny bubbles filling my mouth. Anyone who has read some of my reviews, and the cocktails which I like to construct for the various spirits I have sampled, realizes that I am a soda loving  person. A spirit that combines my love of soda bubbles with a light crisp taste really has my attention from the get go.

I contacted the importer of O2 Vodka, Premium Imports, to see about getting a sample to review on my blog. After a few months they came through in spades with samples of each the O2 Premium Sparkling Vodka and the 945 Super Premium Sparkling Vodka.  Both versions have those wonderful champagne-like bubbles. These bubbles are supposed to stimulate the taste-buds accentuating the flavours of food the vodka is served with, and the flavours of the cocktails the vodka is served in.

I invited several of my good friends over for a Vodka Tasting where we put the O2 Premium Sparkling Vodka through the rigors of my review methodolgy.  Here is an excerpt from the resulting review:

“…The initial aroma from the glass is of a very light citrus, and my initial reaction to the Sparkling Vodka was positive as the first sip covered my tongue….”

As well I have included a new recipe called, The Pomerenke. Please enjoy the review and the new cocktail.

Review: Nemiroff Cranberry (Liqueur)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on April 21, 2011

For the last several weeks I have been enjoying myself sampling and reviewing various Nemiroff Vodkas and Flavoured Vodkas. Today, however, I am reviewing a the Nemiroff Cranberry, which is a liqueur rather than a flavoured Vodka.  Nemiroff Cranberry is a Vodka based liqueur which derives its flavour not just from Cranberries (apparently hand-picked in Siberian marshes) but also includes the natural flavours of apple juice, elderberries and Hawthorne. As a final touch, Crimean Brandy is used to complement these flavours in a complex but delightful finished product.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…The leading flavour is indeed a tart but sweet cranberry juice; but there is a solid influence of sour green apples as well. A light wine-like grape flavour lies underneath which gives the everything a slightly fermented flavour. Then there is something very different that I have never tasted before…”

As well I have included two nice cocktails, A Rumberry Cocktail and a Long Cranberry Cocktail. Please enjoy the reviews and the cocktails.
