Review: Shelter Point Single Cask Rye Whisky (Cask No. 6)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 10, 2022

The Shelter Point Farm and Distillery was established in 2011. It is located on 380 acres in Oyster River, BC, about halfway up the eastern side of Vancouver Island. The farm and distillery contains 2 kilometers of oceanfront, a natural mosaic of streams, a salmon-bearing river, wetlands, forests and fields which are all shared with native wildlife. This land has been farmed for generations and remains one of the last seaside farms on the Island.

Shelter Point Single Cask Rye is a Distillery Exclusive available at the distillery as well as online as new casks are bottled. The whisky is made from 100% rye grain and bottled with its natural colour (non-chill filtering) at cask strength (usually between 58 % and 60 % alcohol by volume).

“… Big beautiful oak notes complimented by vanilla and butterscotch. There is a robust grain and rye combination followed by graham wafers, hints of maple and almond extract. The oak and rye notes just keep growing reminding me of a waving grain fields set beside an expanse of forest …”

#Top100CanadianWhisky of 2017 – #71 Shelter Point Artisanal Cask Strength

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 14, 2017

Shelter Point Artisanal Single Malt Whiskies are distilled in small batches on Vancouver Island (British Columbia). The distillery uses a single grain approach, and the Canadian barley used for distillation is grown right on their own family farm (in Oyster River) and never blended with other grains. The water source is the spring water that comes from the mountain-fed aquifer directly beneath the Island. Perhaps the only things that aren’t sourced locally are the oak barrels, which were sourced from Kentucky bourbon distillers, and the massive copper pot stills which came from Scotland.

This Shelter Point Whisky was bottled at Cask Strength (58.4% alcohol by volume).

“… Intense heat and spice from high alcohol strength. Malt and Speyside spiciness and red licorice and raisin. Some sweet and sour fruit, and some  spicy musty tobacco and leather …”

#Top100CanadianWhisky – #91 Shelter Point Artisanal Single Malt Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 25, 2017

The 10th spirit revealed in my Rum Howler 2017 Top 100 Canadian Whiskies Countdown is Shelter Point Artisanal Single Malt Whisky which is distilled in small batches on Vancouver Island (British Columbia).

To make their single malt whisky, Shelter Point uses a single grain approach, and the Canadian barley used for distillation is grown right on their own family farm (in Oyster River) and never blended with other grains. The water source is the spring water that comes from the mountain-fed aquifer directly beneath the Island.

Perhaps the only things that aren’t sourced locally are the oak barrels, which were sourced from Kentucky bourbon distillers, and the massive copper pot stills which came from Scotland.

“… The nose contains a light punky corn scent which indicates fresh bourbon barrels used to age the spirit. Alongside the corn I notice maple and wood spice, some musty burlap, almond and a few tinges of sour fruit. There is an herbal tinge in the air which hints at anise and licorice as well as a few hints of mint and menthol …”
