Introducing 1921 Tequila Cream

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2010

Today I would like to discuss yet another wonderful spirit which I encountered at the Rocky Mountain Food and Wine Festival, the 1921 Tequila Cream. I will admit that I was a skeptic when the importer for this spirit compared it favourably with other cream liqueurs like Bailey’s Irish Cream, but one sip at the festival, and I was convinced.

1921 Tequila Cream is the only Tequila Cream made in Mexico. It is filled nice cafe mocha flavours and light spices of nutmeg and cinnamon. My Rum Club found it nice when sipped neat, although most web sites I researched recommended using the Cream Tequila in cocktails as a replacement for Irish cream to give the drink a nice Mexican flair.

Ernesto Orozco of Westway L. Ltd. is the importer in my locale, and he was more than happy to supply me with a sample bottle to review.   Here is an excerpt from the review:

“…The 1921 Tequila Cream enters the mouth with a surprising and delicious combination of light tequila/agave  flavour coupled with rich cream, caramel, mocha coffee and a nutty marzipan.  Swimming within the currents of these main flavours are hints of, nutmeg, cinnamon, chocolate and hazelnut. The light nuance of agave tequila rides the currents throughout, but the agave never becomes sharp or aggressive.  I find the flavour simply outstanding….”

Introducing: The Canadian Whisky Awards 2010

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 5, 2010

Davin de Kergommeaux has hit upon an idea which I think is just Grand, The first ever independent Canadian Whisky Awards! I came up with my Rum Howler Awards earlier this year where I sought to give credit to various impressive rums and whiskies which I felt had set the mark for excellence during the past year. And now Davin builds on that, at least with respect to Canadian Whisky. These Canadian Whisky Awards highlight not only the best quality whiskies made in Canada, but also special achievements by Canadian Whisky Distillers.

Why am I excited? Mainly because of the knowledge I have for the outstanding contributions Davin has made in bringing forward recognition of Canadian Whisky as a world-class spirit. You see Davin has the credibility to make these awards meaningful for whisky companies as well as for whisky connoisseurs. He is a professionally trained sommelier who is well acquainted with not only Canadian Whisky, but also all of the other great whiskies of the world. He is an experienced whisky taster and writer who is a much sought after judge at international whisky competitions.

The Awards will be unveiled tomorrow, December 6, on Davin’s Website, Canadianwhisky.org! Based upon what I know of the thoroughness of Davin’s research and the quality of his work, these awards are sure to become prominent markers of excellence on the Canadian Whisky landscape.  Great Job Davin! I look forward to reading the selections for the first Canadian Whisky Awards 2010!

Introducing Mount Gay Eclipse Silver

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2010

I mentioned, here on my blog a week ago, that the rum renaissance is well under way in my home province of Alberta with the arrival of the Mount Gay 1703, Old Cask Selection. What I did not mention was that the distributors for Mount Gay Rum (Select Wines) had arranged for me to receive a few samples of their rum for the purpose of reviewing them on my website. The first of these reviews is for the Mount Gay Eclipse Silver Rum, a Bajan rum from the Mount Gay Plantation on the Island of Barbados.

Mount Gay Rum has been produced on the Isle of Barbados since the beginning of the eighteenth century, making Mount Gay one of the oldest, (if not the oldest) rum brand in the World.  Evidence exists of stills in use at the Mount Gay Plantation site as early as 1667, and we have confirmation (with the first written records) of rum produced on the site in 1703.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…It is unusual in my experience for a white rum to display such an inviting aroma in the glass. The scents and smells of light butterscotch were evident as was a firm presence of banana, a mild citrus zest, and a light minty aroma….”
