Super Bowl Recipe #1: DAB ON ‘EM WINGS

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 4, 2016

Yesterday I Introduced a Super Bowl inspired cocktail for your enjoyment, the Golden Gate. I mentioned in the posting that part of my plans for the Super Bowl was enjoying some chicken wings as well. In that vein of thought, I have decided to share a nice recipe called Dab On ‘Em Wings which features a Dabbing sauce made with Crown Royal De Luxe Canadian Whisky®.

This recipe embraces the relationship between Carolina Panther star Quarterback, Cam Newton and the ‘Dab’. The Dab is a new hip hop dance move which has become part of Cam’s end zone celebration. Some of his opponents have claimed that the move which bears a striking resemblance to a bicep flex is more of a taunt than a celebration. (I say, if you don’t want Cam to Dab, don’t let him score or throw touchdowns.)

If you are a Panther fan, you will want to see Cam do a whole lotta dabbing on Sunday; if you are a Broncos fan, the only dabbing you will want to see is with chicken wings and the delicious sauce.

If you like sticky chicken wings, try this recipe. It is easy to prepare mixing Crown Royal De Luxe Canadian Whisky® with honey, garlic, soy sauce, chili sauce. and a packet of stir fry mix. I recommend you make the sauce and prep the wings the night before, and then refrigerate them overnight. On game day, just set up your barbeque so that you can start grilling half an hour before kick-off.

Dab on 'Em Wings

And of course, since the game starts at 4:00 MST. It is perfectly alright to mix yourself a Canadian Whisky Splash with the Crown Royal De Luxe Whisky to enjoy while you are cooking.

DAB ON ‘EM WINGS

Crown Royal Deluxe Bottle Shot1/3 cup Crown Royal Canadian Whisky®
1/3 cup Honey
1/4 cup Soy sauce
2 tablespoons Thai Chili Sauce
1 packet (0.75-ounce) Kikkoman stir-fry seasoning mix
2 teaspoons crushed garlic
4 pounds chicken wing drumettes
3 scallions (green onions), finely chopped (optional)
1/4 cup chopped peanuts (optional)

In a large bowl, combine whisky, honey, soy sauce, chili sauce, stir-fry seasoning, and garlic
Add drumettes, tossing to coat
Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in refrigerator for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.

Let drumettes stand at room temperature for 30 minutes
Set up the barbeque for cooking over medium-high heat
Lightly oil the heated barbeque grill
Place dummettes on the hot oiled grill
Cook for 12 to 18 minutes (until cooked through) turning occasionally
Transfer chicken to a platter
Sprinkle with chopped scallions and peanuts (optional).

Please enjoy that Canadian Whisky Splash responsibly!

Rum Howler 2014 #3 Canadian Whisky – Crown Royal Cask No. 16

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 22, 2014

rum_howler_badge-2014Crown Royal® Canadian Whisky was originally introduced in 1939 (by Samuel Bronfman of Seagrams) as a special whisky bottling to commemorate the Royal tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in that year. Until 1964, the whisky was only available in Canada; however, today it is available world-wide and is in fact the number one Canadian whisky brand sold in the USA. Crown Royal is currently produced in Gimli Manitoba, at the Crown Royal Distillery which (since the dissolution of the Seagrams portfolio in 2000) is owned by the spirits conglomerate Diageo.

Cask No. 16 is according to the company website,

“handcrafted from more than 50 different aged Canadian whiskies and then finished in Cognac Oak casks from the Limousin forest in France”

Cask No. 16 SAM_1402Although rumours persist as to the demise of this outstanding blend, I note that as of the end of 2014, it remains listed on the Crown Royal website as part of the Crown Royal Family, and remains readily available in my home Province of Alberta.

And, I am quite happy that the Cask No. 16 is readily available, as I have placed it in the number 3 spot, in my Top 25 Canadian Whisky Countdown of 2014.

Here is my recently updated review:

#3 Canadian Whisky – Crown Royal Cask No. 16

“… The first sensation in my mouth was of an incredible softness that this whisky presents. It is almost chewy soft. A mellow corn whisky is up front on the palate, but rich soft butterscotch, caramel and sweet brown sugar sit under the corn flavour supporting and enhancing the experience. A nice spicy bite which has the hallmarks of pears and grapes grabs at the taste buds … “

For those who prefer a more subdued corn profile and a milder rye like burn, this is probably the perfect Canadian whisky. It is wonderfully luxurious and rich, yet full of character and complexity. Sip it neat, or on the rocks, and you will not be disappointed.

Review: Crown Royal Reserve Canadian Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on April 15, 2013

Crown Royal ResereCrown Royal Canadian Whisky is currently produced in Gimli, Manitoba, at the Crown Royal Distillery. The distillery and the brand are owned by Diageo, and I think it is fair to say that Crown Royal is Diageo’s flagship Canadian whisky brand. In 1992, a premium version of Crown Royal was introduced as Crown Royal Special Reserve. This whisky was produced from specially selected casks which were tasted and monitored closely by the Crown Royal Master Blender. These ‘premium casks’ represented whiskies with special character, and they were allowed to age longer with the aim of producing a more premium whisky.

In the fall of 2008, this more premium Crown Royal Special Reserve was relaunched as Crown Royal Reserve Canadian Whisky. I reviewed this whisky back in January of 2010, and I began to suspect something was amiss when I tasted the whisky for a second time in a blind format in the fall of 2011, almost two years later. I was on the jury for the Canadian Whisky Awards, and although my blind scores were for the most part reasonably close to my review scores; this particular whisky was one which stood out as an anomaly. When exactly the same thing occurred in the fall of 2012, I decided I had better revisit the whisky and re-score it. (I am not above admitting I might have gotten something wrong.)

You may click on the following excerpt to read my new review!

Review: Crown Royal Reserve Canadian Whisky

“… I smell distinct impressions of ginger and wood spices. As the whisky breathes some baking spices begin to rise with vanilla, nutmeg, and cloves. These are accented by a touch of maple and some spicy tobacco spice. Some tart apples make their way into the breezes as well as some impressions of sour fruit and canned peaches …”

Please enjoy the review and the two recipes included at the end, the Royal Bang, and the Evening Salute.

Review: Crown Royal XR (LaSalle) Canadian Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 26, 2012

Crown Royal unveiled their new Crown Royal XR, LaSalle Whisky in the US market a few short months ago. The previously released Crown Royal XR Whisky, (click here for my review) was a unique bottling of Crown Royal Whisky, which included in the blend, the last aged stocks from the Crown Royal Waterloo Distillery which burned down in 1993. This latest Crown Royal XR Whisky blend focuses its attention instead, on selected remaining whisky stocks from the renowned LaSalle Distillery in Quebec, Canada. The LaSalle Distillery is significant to Crown Royal, as it was the first distillery opened by the Bronfman Family (a legendary name within the spirits industry). The Bronfmans were responsible for the creation of the original Crown Royal Whisky in 1939 to commemorate King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Canada.’

I received my whisky sample several weeks ago and here is an excerpt from my review:

“…The whisky is a richly coloured amber, and that trademark punky caramel-corn Crown Royal nose rises from the glass immediately. The air is rich with vanilla and honeycomb, and displays a strong rich oak taint….”

Introducing: Crown Royal Limited XR LaSalle Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on May 16, 2012

Crown Royal has just unveiled their new Crown Royal XR® LaSalle Whisky. The previous edition of Crown Royal XR®, (click here for my review) was s a unique bottling of Crown Royal Whisky, which included in the blend, the last aged stocks from the Crown Royal Waterloo Distillery which burned down in 1993. This latest Crown Royal XR® blend includes select remaining whisky stocks from the renowned LaSalle Distillery in Quebec, Canada. Apparently the Crown Royal XR® will be an on-going series, with each Crown Royal XR blend created with the inclusion rare batch whisky stocks and distributed for a limited time only.

This present edition, Crown Royal XR® LaSalle, was ‘handcrafted” by Crown Royal Master Blender, Andrew MacKay. Mr. MacKay actually began his apprenticeship with Crown Royal at the LaSalle Distillery. The creation of this new XR whiskey was therefore a uniquely personal experience for the Master Blender who stated:

“LaSalle holds a historic place in the whisky world and is incredibly special to me, because it’s where I first learned about creating memorable blends. To be able to incorporate these Extra Rare LaSalle whiskies into the new Crown Royal XR is an honor, and I hope loyal adult Crown Royal drinkers enjoy it responsibly – whether toasting to a monumental anniversary or simply gathering with friends and family on the weekend.”

The LaSalle Distillery is significant to Crown Royal, as it was the first distillery opened by the Bronfman Family (a legendary name within the spirits industry). The Bronfmans were responsible for the creation of the original Crown Royal Whisky in 1939 to commemorate King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Canada.

The new Crown Royal XR Limited LaSalle’s packaging continues the original presentation theme established with the first installment in this ‘Extra Rare’ Whisky Series. The uniquely shaped bottle which resembles a crown, the deluxe glass stopper, and the iconic velvet bag will remain the same in shape and design; but, the new display box and velvet bag now reflect a royal blue color to echo the regal history of the product.

Crown Royal XR will be available nationwide for a suggested retail price of $129.99 per 750 ml bottle (bottled at 40 % abv.) beginning in early June. As was the case with the inaugural installment in the ‘Extra Rare’ series, the new Crown Royal XR will be available for a limited time only.

Although I have not yet tasted the new Crown Royal Limited XR LaSalle Whiskey, I shall be sure to provide a comprehensive review as soon as I do.
