Review: Rum Nation Guatemala Gran Reserva

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 8, 2020

Rum Nation is an Italian company created by Fabio Rossi, who began his life in the spirits trade as a Oenologist (one who has studied wine-making). After his studies, Mr. Rossi left the wine business and started up a whisky company in Edinburgh (Wilson and Morgan) acting as an independent bottler of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. His interest turned to rum, and in 1999 Fabio Rossi founded Rum Nation. His company is headquartered in Italy; but Fabio purchases select rums from various distillers in the Caribbean and the Americas. As a result Rum Nation provides a rather unique assortment of limited edition bottlings. One such bottling is Rum Nation Guatamala Gran Reserva

Review: Rum Nation Guatemala Gran Reserva

“… the flavours are firm with heated oak spices mingling with citrus zest. A ribbon of orange liqueur, mint and menthol with dark treacle and dark licorice welling up from underneath. Herbal flavours resonate with the second sip with bitter chocolate and espresso come though in spades when ice is added …”

Please enjoy my review of this delightful but heated sipper.

Review: Adictivo Tequila Añejo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2020

Tequila Adictivo was founded by Gildardo Partida, a third generation ‘tequileros’ from San Diego whose family apparently has a rich tradition of tequila manufacture and distribution which reaches back over 100 years.

Adictivo Tequila Anejo is an aged or ‘rested’ tequila spirit produced from agave pinas which have been baked in traditional brick ovens, with the juice extracted with a Stone Roller Mill. The cooked agave juice is twice distilled before being aged for 2 years in French oak barrels. Depending upon the market the spirit is exported to, the bottling proof may be anywhere from 35 to 40 % abv.. (My sample bottle was bottled at 40 %.)

Review: Adictivo Tequila Añejo

“… Sweet agave fruit, honey and butterscotch, very light on the pepper, with grilled pineapple and flower blossoms underneath. This is very inviting, but it seems to be sweetened to the point that the white peppery spice so typical of tequila has been subjugated …”

Please enjoy my review.

Review: Cane Island Australia Rum (4 Year Old)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2020

Cane Island is a rum brand owned by Infinity Spirits, who appear to be based in Amsterdam. The purpose of the Cane Island Brand appears to be to showcase Rums which are sourced from a single distillery from iconic Island rum nations in the Caribbean and elsewhere in the world. Each one of these countries has a long history of rum production with their own styles and traditions.

Cane Island Australian Rum was distilled at Beenleigh Rum Distillery. If you go to the Beenleigh Distillery website you will see that the claim to be the oldest operating distillery in Austrailia who have been producing rum since before the invention of Coca Cola. The rum is distributed by 1423 World Class Spirits (based in Denmark) and according to their website, Cane Island Australian Rum was distilled on a pot still, matured for 4 years in a tropical climate using former American oak bourbon barrels.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Cane Island Australia Rum

“… The rum carries a nice oaky sweetness across the palate. Herbal pot still flavours meld into the flavour profile nicely as do flavours of both marzipan and orange marmalade. Vanillans and caramel serve to keep the heat down, and the rum has a heavy bodied texture that feels nice in the mouth …”

Please enjoy my review of the excellent 4 year old rum.

Review: Great Plains Brandy Cask 18 Year Old Canadian Whisky (Batch 1)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2020

Great Plains Craft Spirits are located in Calgary, Alberta. They are a small company which sources special whiskies for blending and finishing. The intent is to offer to the marketplace limited edition bottlings which feature custom blending and cask finishes. These whiskies can be quite rare with batches as small as two barrels as well as larger projects (up to this point) of up to twenty-four barrels.

This is Great Plains first release and was drawn from 22 casks of pure corn whisky which according to the back of the bottle was produced at the now defunct Potters Distillery in the Okanagan region of British Columbia. The whisky was aged for a little longer than 17 years in ex bourbon barrels and then finished in Jerez (Osborne) Brandy barrels from Andalusia, Spain.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Great Plains Brandy Cask 18 Year Old

“… The cask strength nature of the bottling is immediately apparent as the nose is full of heated fire, fine oak spices, and wonderful aromas of corn and grain. A mouth-watering combination of vanilla, butterscotch, orange peel and almond climbs into the air alongside. The impulse to steal a sip before more completely examining the nose is strong; but that would be a mistake, as this is a dram which grows in the glass as you let the 18 year old whisky breathe …”

Please enjoy my review of one of the best whiskies I have tasted in 2020!

Review: Neptune Barbados Gold Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2020

Neptune Rum is a British company was founded in 2017 in Cheltenham, UK.  It was  inspired by the Roman God Neptune, god of water and seas. Neptune Barbados Gold Rum is apparently a blend of 3, 5 and 8 year old molasses based rums from Barbados distilled at the family owned Four Square Distillery (This distillery is located at a former 17th-century sugarcane plantation at the southern end of Barbados). The blended spirit were aged in Amercan Oak barrels with the final rum bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

The rum advertises that it is created without the addition of any extra ingredients or chemicals. This would include no added sugars or other sweeteners and no artificial flavourings or colourings.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Neptune Barbados Gold Rum

“… Subtle and nuanced with a nice melding of vanilla, butterscotch and almond accented by fine oak spice. The fine oak spices build, bringing dusty impressions of sandalwood, ginger and light fruity citrus zest forward. There are hints of cinnamon as well. Hints of tropical fruit (banana and coconut) add to the nuanced aroma …”

Enjoy my review which includes my suggested cocktail, the 11 A.M. Daiquiri.
