Cocktail Hour: Casa Rica

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 16, 2016

Casa Rica SAM_2581When I receive spirit samples for review, I often ask the producer (or distributer) for a cocktail suggestion or two to give me an idea of how the people who make and market the spirit intend for us to enjoy it.

Today’s cocktail is one such bar drink. It is a sour drink that it uses both orange juice and lime and includes a dash of bitters to give the libation added depth and complexity. The recipe was sent to me by the Alberta distributor of Casamigos Tequila, Charton Hobbs and after giving it a try, I can safely give the bar drink my Rum Howler Seal of Approval.

Casa Rica

2 oz Casamigos Anejo Tequila
1/2 oz Grand Marnier
1/8 oz fresh Lime Juice
1/8 oz fresh Orange Juice
dash Angostura Bitters
Ice
Orange Twist

Add all the ingredient into a metal shaker with ice
Shake until the outside of the shaker begins to frost
Strain into a cocktail glass
Garnish with an Orange Twist
Enjoy Responsibly!

2016 Spiced Rum Taste-off: Capatain Morgan Original Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 15, 2016

Cable Car SAM_2624

Captain Morgan and the Cable car

Admiral Sir Henry Morgan (aka Captain Morgan) was a Welsh ‘privateer’ who attacked and plundered the Caribbean on behalf of, and with the written consent of (in the form of an English Letter of Marque), the Governor of Jamaica, Sir Thomas Modyford. Privateers at that time in history were essentially ‘legal pirates’ who were allowed to attack and loot enemies of the state reaping the rewards from their plunder in lieu of pay. Researching Sir Henry Morgan, I learned he was a skilled naval captain, a ruthless buccaneer, and one of the most successful ‘privateers’ in the history of piracy earning a Knighthood for himself in 1674.

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is of course the name of Diageo’s top-selling spiced rum. It is the most successful spiced rum (at least with respect to sales) in the entire category, and has pretty much set the standard for sales and marketing for all other spiced rums to follow.

Here are my latest thoughts on the Original Captain:

#16 Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum

” …  I began to taste light oak spices, a peppery citrus zest, and the faint echo of baking spices. My feeling is that the flavour profile is quite approachable, but it is not really geared towards sipping. This is a mixer and that is where the rum excels …”

Please enjoy the review which includes a fantastic cocktail recipe created by Tony Abou-Ganim, the Cable Car.

Review: Cabresto Don Silver Reserve Añejo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 14, 2016

Cabresto Anejo SAM_2578Tequila Cabresto, imported by Cabresto Imports Corporation, is a brand rooted as solidly in Detroit as they are in Arandas, Mexico. Tequila Cabresto is a family owned brand with duties spread across two generations of the Lopez family. Founder Silverio Lopez runs the family ranch in Arandas and cares for the agave until its reached peak yield. His son Antonio is learning the craft of growing the best agave in the world and currently handles the branding and exportation of Cabresto to the US. Daughter Sonia is the first Lopez to graduate college and is spearheading the US operations of Cabresto Imports Corporation. They do all this while maintaining the family tire shop in Southwest Detroit.

In December, Cabresto released their Don Silverio Reserve Añejo. Aged for 18 months in American white oak barrels, Cabresto Añejo was the first spirit in the Cabresto line-up to feature Tequila Cabresto‘s new shorter more premium bottle and modernized logo.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Cabresto Don Silver Reserve Añejo

“… The initial aroma from the glass continues to excite me as my nostrils are greeted by clean oak spices which have been accented by citrus zest and white pepper. Fruity agave reaches up as well melding itself into the clean spicy aroma. I catch faint whispers of grilled pineapple and baked garden squash, a light winding of vanilla as well as lovely, faint impressions of mint and cinnamon …”

Please enjoy my review as I continue to climb the ladder towards the top of the Cabresto Tequila line-up.  Chimo!

Cocktail Hour: Añejo Tequila Sour

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 13, 2016

‘Sour’ drinks are amongst the oldest family of mixed drinks and have been served by bartenders in America since the early 1800s. The basic recipe for a sour is to combine a base spirit with lemon or lime juice and to add a sweetener to balance the flavour. Although this style of cocktail originated quite a bit earlier, Jerry Thomas is often referenced in his 1862 book, How to Mix Drinks for providing the first published recipe for this form of bar drink.

Añejo Tequila Sour SAM_2594Typically a sour recipe will take the form of a 4-2-1 construction which represents 4 parts of base spirit, two parts of sour (lemon or lime juice), and one part of sweetener (sugar syrup or orange liqueur). This formulation works very well, allowing the base spirit to dominate the serving while maintaining the balance between the sweet and the sour elements. Sometime though, particularly when I am mixing with an outstanding spirit, I prefer to alter those ratios bringing an even stronger focus to the base spirit. Such is the case with Cabresto Don Silver Anejo Tequila.

Añejo Tequila Sour

3 oz Cabresto Añejo Tequila
1/8 oz Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao
3/4 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
1/4 oz Simple Syrup (1:1)
2 dashes Orange Bitters
ice
Orange Peel

Add the first five ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice
Shake until the sides frost
Strain into a chilled rocks glass with ice
Garnish with orange peel.

Enjoy Responsibly!

2016 Spiced Rum Taste-off: Lamb’s Blacksheep Spiced Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 12, 2016

lambs-blacksheepLamb’s Blacksheep Spiced Rum was recently dropped from the  Corby Brands website which lists their entire stable of North American Brands. hopefully this is only temporary as the brand featured a very unique take on the spiced rum category. When the brand was listed, they offered this description of the spiced rum:

“…Lamb’s® Black Sheep Spiced Rum is produced and blended in small batches to ensure consistency of the complex flavour profile that is unique to the rum category. Our ingredients – the finest cinnamon from Korintje, Madagascar-bourbon vanilla and lime essence from Mexico have been carefully selected from around the world to ensure optimal enjoyment on the palate…”

My bottle of the Blacksheep rum is bottled at 37.5 % alcohol by volume, and even though it has disappeared from Corby’s website it is still available in my locale in the attractive 750 ml bottle shown to the left.

Here is a link to my review:

#17 Lamb’s Blacksheep Spiced Rum

“… Speaking of the cinnamon, it’s imprint is felt firmly in the breeses above the glass as is a healthy dose of vanilla. The combination of sugar sweetener, cinnamon, and vanilla reminds me of those tiny red heart-shaped candies I used to buy as a kid. Behind the cinnamon and the vanilla is the mild caramel scent …”
