2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #19 – Lot No. 40 Cask Strength

I guess a lot of persons would have thought that the Lot No. 40 Cask Strength would have ended up higher on my list of favourites this year. And in terms of quality it certainly deserves a higher spot. But this list is about favourites, which means that the whiskies on the list are those that like to return to more frequently and which I like sharing with a wide variety of guests.

The truth is that although I love the cask strength Lot No. 40, this whisky is just too aggressive both in terms of alcohol heat and in terms of robust flavour for me to return to it very often or to serve to the uninitiated. This cask strength bomb kicks you in the mouth and slaps your tonsils down your throat. Frankly my friends and I don’t need that sort of treatment every day.

But when one of us does need a kick in the pants, it is nice to have a bottle of Lot No. 40 Cask Strength on hand.

“… The flavour hits like a sledge-hammer with rough oak and cedar spice pushed by alcohol heat, dark chocolate and heavy rye bread. Add in Christmas fruitcake, and lots of peppery spice including black pepper and cloves and we are still only part way into describing the sheer volume of flavour …”

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #20 – High River Canadian Whisky

This year I have shortened my list of favourite Canadian Whiskies considerably as I have selected only 20. The main reason for this is that I just ran out of time to do a comprehensive list especially in a year where I wasn’t as active doing reviews as I normally am. This years list doesn’t necessarily reflect the 20 best Canadian Whiskies, rather it represents my favourites. Some are mixer’s, some are sippers, and some are somewhere in between. But all are whiskies which I would have no hesitation sharing with my friends or enjoying on my own.

Let’s start with number 20, High River Canadian is owned by Sazerac, the producers of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

Review: High River Canadian Whisky

“… There is a light impression of maple and cedar which combine with grain to give me an impression of graham wafers dipped in syrup. Oak builds with vanilla and almond making me think of marzipan. Marmalade and chocolate complete the nose which seems to be rich and full of whisky goodness …”

Note: As we get further along in this list (I hope to publish one whisky per day through until December 22nd), I will introduce 20 more of my favourites. The listing is roughly in order, although I would be the first to caution you that I don;t really have an overall fave. Some days I like to sip, and some days I like to mix.

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Dave Keon Alumni Whisky

Today I am completing my series of reviews for the 2018 and 2019 J.P. Wiser’s NHLAA  Whiskies. A few years ago J.P. Wiser’s and the NHL Alumni Association (NHLAA) got together to bring whisky fans something uniquely Canadian. One time edition Canadian whiskies which are each blended with the aim of containing characteristic links to specific NHLAA members for whom the blend is named.

This is the review for the J. P. Wiser’s Dave Keon Alumni Whisky. According to the press information sent to me:

With a 45% ABV to celebrate the 45-points Dave scored in his 1st season, this well-balanced whisky compliments his offensive and defensive abilities on the ice. To truly pay homage to this hockey legend, this whisky is aged 14 years for Dave’s playing number and uses 4 different barrels to commemorate his 4 Cup wins.

“… The aroma rising from the glass is complex with scents of orange peel mingling with vanilla, oak spice, almond, and ginger. As the glass breathes I begin to notice corn syrup and oak sap mingling with the orange peel giving me an impression of marmalade and canned fruit …”

Note: As part of the partnership with the NHL Alumni, a potion of the sales are be donated to NHLAA to support their philanthropic causes. This whisky was exclusive to Canada and marketed primarily in Quebec and Ontario.

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Mark Messier Alumni Whisky

Today I am continuing my series of reviews for the 2018 and 2019 J.P. Wiser’s NHLAA  Whiskies. A couple years ago J.P. Wiser’s and the NHL Alumni Association (NHLAA) got together to bring whisky fans something uniquely Canadian. One time edition Canadian whiskies which are each blended with the aim of containing characteristic links to specific NHLAA members for whom the blend is named.

This is the review for the J. P. Wiser’s Mark Messier Alumni Whisky. According to the press information sent to me:

Arguably one of the game’s best captains, Mark led his teams with a combination of skill and strength. This bold & tenacious 3-grain whisky is skillfully blended to deliver on Messier’s strength at 47% ABV. Aged 11 years in Speyside Malt barrels, this whisky celebrates #11’s impact on the game.

“… As I let the glass breathe, I notice that a lovely smell of baking spices and cinnamon buns have unraveled themselves from the oak toffee. Their is also a luscious fruitiness with smells of apricot jam and marmalade making my mouth water slightly. The melded scent of oak and toffee continues to grow as does a firm impression of marzipan …”

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Yvan Cournoyer Alumni Whisky

I was recently sent three of the 2019 – 20 Edition Alumni Whiskies to review on my website, J.P. Wiser’s Mark Messier, Dave Keon, and Yvan Cournoyer. This is part of the new Captain’s Line featuring these historic ice legends who each served as Captain of their respective NHL Hockey teams.

The subject of this review, J.P. Wiser’s Yvan Cournoyer Alumni Whisky is blended from 3 grains, and aged for 12 years. The twelve years of aging is of course an homage to Cournoyer’s Jersey Number. Additionally (according to the information sent to me) the spirit was inspired by Cournoyer’s game-winning pass to Paul Henderson in the Canada 1972 Summit Series. Cournoyer’s smooth pass and Henderson’s gritty goal is said to be reflected in the smooth 3-grain whisky which is complimented by gritty rye flavours.

“… The first sip of whisky is smooth and just as promised in the advertising this smooth quality is quickly followed by a swat of spicy rye. I taste maple, rye and oak spice, butterscotch, vanilla, almond all jumbled together with yummy baking spices joining in for good measure …”
