2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #13 – Hiram Walker Special Old

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 10, 2019

Hiram Walker Special Old is one of those whiskies which I have enjoyed for decades. The first time I purchased a bottle was when my family and I had just bought a small rustic cabin at Alberta Beach on Lac St. Anne. The place had no running water or indoor plumbing, just fours with on old cook stove in the kitchen, a fire pit in the back.

The liquor store at Alberta Beach did not have a lot of selection but Hiram Walker Special Old was one of the more premium brands that was sold there. So when we had a family outing to the cabin, I would sometimes stop at that store and pick up a bottle for the weekend. Today my love for Hiram Walker Special Old is as much about those fond memories out at the lake, as it is about the quality of the spirit. (It is pretty darn good!)

Here is a link to my most recent review:

Review: Hiram Walker Special Old

“… As I let the whisky sit, the rye aroma subdues and note of citrus fruit, bourbon, and vanilla becomes more apparent as well as a deepening of the toffee. The nose is robust and my appetite for the whisky has been whetted …”

24 Days of Rum (#10) – Ginebra San Miguel Anejo Dark Rum (Philippines)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 10, 2019

Day 10 of the 24 Days of rum Advent Calendar brings us to Manila in the Philippines. Ginebra San Miguel Anejo Dark Rum was a very hard spirit to research. It appears to be a small production rum sold mainly into Taiwan. Possibly the rum is related to the spirit formerly known as Tondena Distiller’s Anejo Dark Rum (the label is similar).

I say this because Tondena Distillers Limited were recently purchased by Ginebra San Miguel, a diversified beverage company majority-owned by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) located in the Philippines. It would make sense that they would be re-branding some of the Tondena spirits as Ginebra San Miguel.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the tenth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ginebra San Miguel Anejo Dark Rum

“… Oak spice, touch of treacle and a welling of baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon and clove). Roasted Marshmallow, orange peel, marzipan and tobacco …”

24 Days of Rum (#9) – William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum (Madeira)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 9, 2019

I have reached Rum number 9 in my Christmas Advent, a mild Agricole-like rum from Madeira. Madeira (an autonomous region of Portugal) is an archipelago comprising 4 islands approximately 520 kilometers off the northwest coast of Africa.

William Hinton founded his Distillery in 1845 producing his rum from local sugar cane juice. The Distillery had great success and by 1920 was processing 600 tons of sugar cane daily. Unfortunately, this was the peak of the Distillery’s rum production and a decline eventually saw the distillery cease production in 1986.

Fortunately, in 2006, William Hinton’s heirs relaunched the distillery using an alembic still. Their William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum is produced from sugar cane syrup which has undergone a special prolonged fermentation process and aged in French oak barrels.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the ninth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: William Hinton 3 Year Old Rum

“… Light and floral almost delicate with a mild herbal quality, hints of camphor, ginger and cinnamon as well as a light light fruitiness of banana and green grape, perhaps a touch of red licorice …”

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #14 – Crown Royal Northern Rye

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 9, 2019

Crown Royal Northern Rye took the world by storm when it was introduced in released in 2015. The main reason for this was that World renowned whisky guru, Jim Murray (in one of his most controversial selections) declared the Northen Rye to be thebest whisky in the entire world that year.

Jim Murray’s declaration cause a stampede of consumers to rush to their favourite liquor store in order to buy a case before it ran our. It did run out, but only temporarily as Crown Royal quickly ramped up production to meet the demand. Since 2015, it has remained a staple of my home bar:

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Whisky

“… I sense a stronger underlying oakiness within the spirit as fine wood spices rise into the air and the merry little breezes above the glass are tinged with crisp spicy rye notes as well …”

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #15 – Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 8, 2019

Forty Creek’s Copper Pot Reserve is a dandy whisky. It’s not one those dry rye whiskies Canada is famous for, it is instead more of a hybrid built upon a foundation of three separately distilled grains, barley, corn and rye, distilled and aged in oak separately. When each whisky is ready, the three finished whiskies are blended together and ‘married’ in oak once more allowing the three to become one.

The result is a wonderful spirit which I love to sip over ice.  As I sip and the ice melts, the whisky seems to change character bringing light chocolate flavours into focus as it is chilled and then as the water content increases it becomes sweeter again.

You may read the full review here:

Review: Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve

“… The first sip of whisky is all spice and everything nice as the spirit heats the mouth with the alluring spiciness of oak, rye and orange peel zest. Embers of cloves and cinnamon stir in the background, and it takes me a moment or two to notice the dark caramel and chocolate flavours that lie beneath.… “
