24 Days of Rum (#8) – Ratu Dark 5 Year Old Rum (Fiji)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 8, 2019

Its off to Fiji as I sample Rum #8 in the 24 Days of Rum Advent Calendar from 1423 World Class Spirits. Ratu Rums are produced by the Rum Co. of Fiji since 1980  at their distillery in Lautoka Fiji. There are three rums in there line-up at this time, the 5 year old Ratu Spiced, the 8 year old Ratu Signature, and the 5 Year Old Ratu Dark.

This is the review for the Dark Rum which has been filtered through charcoal made from coconut husks and aged locally for five years in oak barrels. Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the eighth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ratu Dark 5 Year Old Rum

“… Treacle dominates, Oak spice, molasses as well as baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon and clove). A hit of licorice and menthol as well …”

Chimo!

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. 2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #16 – Windsor Canadian

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2019

Earlier this year, I was hosting a bit of a house warming party as my family and I had finally completed our move to our new home. The move was precipitated by my son’s need for a more wheelchair accessible home and although we hated to leave the original home we built 20 years ago, we were glad to be in our new digs.

I still had a lot of my Canadian Whisky collection boxed up and inaccessible so I went to the store to find a suitable dry rye whisky for the party.

And there it was a 1.75 litre bottle of Windsor Canadian for only $44.95.  Not only did the Windsor Canadian fit the bill as a great dry rye Whisky for a gathering of friends (most of whom would be mixing cocktails), it was also probably the best whisky deal I encountered during the entire year of 2019.

Review: Windsor Canadian Whisky

“… The initial nose is very typically ‘Canadian’ with firm butterscotch scents lying alongside a fruit-filled spicy rye. As I let the glass sit, some dusty ripened grain notes develop along with accompanying scents of straw and the chaff. There is a bit of dry grassiness reminiscent of timothy and foxtail and some zesty notes of orange and lemon peel. Rounding out the nose are a few bits of cinnamon and dark brown sugar …”

Please enjoy the review which includes a modern take on the classic Whiskey Crusta Cocktail, which I have called the Canadian Crusta.

Chimo!

24 Days of Rum (#7) – By the Dutch Batavia Arrack (Indonesian Rum)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 7, 2019

Day 7 of my 24 Days of Rum advent brings me to the Netherlands by the way of Indonesia. By The Dutch Batavia Arrack is an Indonesian Rum made from local cane distilled on the Island of Java, which was then shipped to Amsterdam to be aged and then bottled in Schiedem which is located in the Netherlands

This is a 100 % sugar-cane based spirit produced from of a range of Pot distilled spirits. Traditional Bativia Arrack uses a fermentation process includes the addition of local (red) rice. This sets it apart from traditional Rum and some jurisdictions refuse to allow Bativia Arrack to be labeled as rum even though the base material is sugar-cane.

By The Dutch Bativia Arrack has been produced in the traditional method, however, for the purpose of this review, I will refer to the spirit as both Batavia Arrack and as Indonesian Rum.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the seventh spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: By the Dutch Batavia Arrack

“… A light undercurrent of vegetal aroma give the spirit a hint of Cachaca beside fine oak spice, almond, butterscotch, ginger, orange peel, banana, coconut and melon …”

Chimo!

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #17 – Crown Royal Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2019

Crown Royal Canadian Whisky is currently produced in Gimli, Manitoba, at the Crown Royal Distillery. The distillery and the brand are owned by Diageo, and I think it is fair to say that Crown Royal is Diageo’s flagship Canadian whisky brand.

In 1992, a premium version of Crown Royal was introduced as Crown Royal Special Reserve. This whisky was produced from specially selected casks which were tasted and monitored closely by the Crown Royal Master Blender. These ‘premium casks’ represented whiskies with special character, and they were allowed to age longer with the aim of producing a more premium whisky. In the fall of 2008, this more premium Crown Royal Special Reserve was relaunched as Crown Royal Reserve Canadian Whisky.

This is a whisky I would recommend for sipping neat without ice,

Review: Crown Royal Reserve Canadian Whisky

“… The whisky is lightly oaky with wood spices leading out as orange peel and pepper. Some clear rye spices (ginger in particular) jump in, and this spicy montage of flavour is accented by sweet flavours of caramel and maple. There is of course that typical punky corn/bourbon presence winding through the whisky that seems to be the signature flavour of Crown Royal …”

If you need a special gift this Christmas for a fan of the Crown Royal Style, You probably can’t go wrong with the selection of Crown Royal Reserve!

24 Days of Rum (#6) – Pixan 8 Anos Rum (Mexico)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 6, 2019

Day 6 of my 24 Days of Rum advent takes me to Destileria Espiritus del Norte a relatively new distillery located in Monterrey in northeastern Mexico where they produce Pixan Rum. Apparently Pixan comes to us linguistically from the Mayan language and it is a word which roughly means ‘Spirit which gives life‘.

Pixan 8 Anos is their most premium rum. Several retail sites I visited indicated that the rum is produced from molasses upon a double column still and then aged for up to 8 years in American oak barrels which previously contained bourbon.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the sixth spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Pixan 8 Anos Rum

“… Oak spice continues to pour out, heightened butterscotch sweetness with vanilla and hints of sweet and sour fruit, bits of menthol and herbal grass …”
