Review: Gordon and MacPhail Inchgower 2005 (Connoisseurs Choice)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 19, 2018

The Connoisseurs Choice is a series of malt whiskies from various Scottish distilleries many of which are no longer producing whisky.  Boasting over 40 different single malts available from the Scottish regions The sheer variety of styles and flavours of whisky available from Gordon and Macphail’s Connoisseurs range is staggering.

The Inchgower Distillery was built in 1871 in the Lowland Region of Scotland. The facility is currently owned by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd (since 1938), however the current operator of Inchgower is the spirits conglomerate, Diageo. The Distillery has four operating stills with the whisky produced contributing a major portion of Bell’s Blended Whisky.

Gordon and MacPhail Inchgower Distillery 2005 (Connoisseurs Choice) is a Single Malt Whisky which was distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2016. It was matured in refill sherry casks with no special finishing. The Spirit was bottled at 46 % abv.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Gordon and MacPhail Inchgower 2005 (Connoisseurs Choice)

“… The dram is off the beaten path so to speak with interesting flavours and a firm spicy bite. I like it much better with ice than without, and I also suspect my appreciation would have grown if my sample had been larger. There is a real “once you get used to this ou are really going to like it” quality about the whisky …”

Please enjoy my review as well as the cocktail suggestion which follows.

Review – Hennessy X.O.

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 16, 2018

Jas Hennessy & Co., is the largest Cognac producer in the world today with sales that exceed 45 million bottles per year. The company was founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy who was an Irish Officer in the army of Louis XV. Hennessy XO Cognac traces its development back to 1870 when Maurice Hennessy created a special cognac for him to share with his closest friends. This cognac meant for his ‘inner circle’ was given the name X.O to denote it as an “extra old” cognac. This X.O designation has become a labeling standard used throughout the industry, and today denotes an older Cognac style which must meet a minimum age requirement of 6 years for all of the eaux de vie within  its assemblage.

The subject of this review is the modern Hennessy X.O Cognac. The spirit is produced from the fruity Ugni Blanc grapes which have been harvested from the four great crus of the Cognac region (Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois). The grape wine produced is (of course) double distilled upon Hennessy Distillery’s copper pot stills, and then selected eaux-de-vie is set down to age (some for as long as 30 years) in french oak casks which have constructed from old growth oak timbers.

Here is a link to my review:

Review – Hennessy X.O.

“… The initial aroma displayed a strong indication of oak and wood spice with firm scents of caramel and raisin buried within that spiciness. The oak is dominant, however there is enough caramel sweetness and raisin-like fruitiness to compliment the oak and entice me to go further …”

Enjoy my review.

Review: El Jimador Reposada Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 14, 2018

El Jimador Tequila is owned by Brown-Froman. The Brand is produced thirty miles from Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, in the town of Amatitan, at Brown – Forman Tequila Distillery Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V. which is also referred to as Hacienda Herradura. The Hacienda also produces the more premium Herradura brand as well as Suave 35 and Antiguo. The Jimador tequila is named to pay homage to the jimadors who harvest agave. After it is harvested, the agave is cooked in clay ovens. The juice is extracted after cooking using steel bladed shredders after which it is distilled on old copper pot stills.

Because Hacienda Herradura is located in the Central Lowlands of Jalisco rather than in the Highlands we can expect a more earthy style of tequila than which would be produced in the Highlands where the agave tends to produce a spirit with higher citrus notes and a sharper squeal of peppery spice.

El Jimador Reposado is barrel rested for two months before being bottled between 35 % and 40 % alcohol by volume depending upon the market the spirit is intended for. My sample bottle produced for the Canadian Market (and the USA Market) was bottled at 40 % abv..

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: El Jimador Reposado Tequila

“… I gave the glass a little time to breathe and the punky fruity agave gained a little strength overtaking the dusty oak spice. An earthy quality is present as are indications of light baking spices. The overall impact of the nose has me stealing a sip just a little quicker than I had anticipated …”

Please enjoy the review which concludes with a few of my recommended servings, Chimo!

Review: Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 12, 2018

Jack Daniel’s is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee, by the Jack Daniel Distillery (currently owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation). The flagship brand Jack Daniels Old No. 7 is produced in much the same manner as bourbon, from a corn heavy mash and aged in new charred white oak barrels. However, the Jack Daniel’s distillery has always resisted the use of the bourbon classification, and instead prefers to label their spirit as Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey. In the advertising and upon their website, the company highlights the fact that Jack Daniels Whiskey undergoes a filtering process (not typically used by bourbon producers) known as the The Lincoln County Process. This Process involves filtering the whiskey through a column of charcoal (or steeping the whiskey in charcoal chips) to remove unwanted flavours and contaminants prior to cask aging. The Jack Daniel’s Distillery produces its own charcoal pellets for the Lincoln County Process from sugar maple timbers. These charcoal pellets are packed into 10-foot (3.0 m) vats, where they are used to remove the impurities from the distilled Jack Daniel’s whiskey.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire represents a blending of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey with a what the company calls ‘a red-hot cinnamon liqueur’.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire

“… The spiced whiskey lives up to its billing bringing oodles of cinnamon heat across the palate. There is so much heat in fact that only a few nuances of flavour from the underlying whisky poke through. I wouldn’t sip this one, but I certainly understand the appeal for those who love spicy heat …”

Please enjoy my review, and my cocktail suggestion inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, Hot Fun in the Summertime.

Review: Strait Vodka 40

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 9, 2018

The Myriad Distillery is proud to be PEI’s first and only producer of a full range of artisan distilled spirits namely Strait Shine®, Lightning, Vodka, Gin, Whisky, Brandy and Pastis. Recently I had a chance to speak with Ken Mill (one of the Distillery’s Principles) over the phone about his operation and products. I learned that Myriad was one of the very first (if not the first) full production Micro-distilleries not only in Prince Edward Island, but in the entire Country. The distillery did in fact pave the way for the other small distilleries to follow.

I also learned that the folks at Myriad Distillery produce all of their products is a small batch style making only those spirits which they have an immediate local market for, and which passes the palate test of the principles. In producing their craft Strait Vodka the distillery begins with a pure Canadian grain alcohol. This neutral spirit is distilled twice more to (according to the distillery):

Ensure a smooth and neutral flavour with hints of natural sweetness that show its Canadian grain origins.

Earlier this summer, I organized a small Vodka tasting for a few friends. We tasted Strait Vodka 40 alongside Russian Standard Vodka, and Banff Ice comparing each for sipping, for shooting, as a palette cleanser, and in cocktails. This review has been written based upon the tasting notes I constructed during the Vodka Tasting as well as from the comments of my friends, and from my impression during a subsequent tasting I did by myself with the spirit in isolation.

Here is a link to my full review for Strait Vodka 40:

Review: Strait Vodka 40

“… I made Vodka Gimlets with each of the three spirits, and of the three, the Strait Vodka made the best gimlet! I also mixed a few cocktails after the event and I found the spirit worked very well when served in cocktails as a compliment to other spirits like gin and tequila …”

Please enjoy my review which include three cocktail suggestions for your enjoyment.
